It feels the same as so many of the attempts to clone Pac-Man on the various 8-bit micros back in the day. Whether it's on your side of the Pond or mine, ya can tell the intention's there, but the product made was really naff.

There's a map online that will show the part to take in order to acquire all treasure items before the 20 minute time limit expires. So this game does technically have an ending. It's fun to try and finish the game on each port, the hardest one, I think, being the Atari 800/5200 ports due to the collision detection being unforgiving. Especially when jumping the scorpions. Pitfall II is also amazing and an even more technological accomplishment when considering the hardware limitations for the various systems. A super special bonus is that the Atari 800 and 5200 ports have an entire second game hidden, only accessible upon successful completion of the standard game. When the final task is completed a door opens and leads to a huge second half of the Lost Caverns that is even harder the the first. It's practically Pitfall III. There are maps available for Pitfall II as well.

I'd argue this is a great example of what's wrong with Wikipedia's list of video game console generations. The Atari VCS and Atari 5200 are clearly not the same "generation". It is debatable if the Intellivision is the same generation as the VCS or the 5200, given the different manufacturers did not release systems in lockstep and there's more of a gradient of evolution. (I'd also argue the VCS is third-gen at best, but Wikipedia's rolled single-game consoles, multi-game consoles, and color multi-game consoles all into one group. And ignored the Studio 2 being a B&W programmable console... but in fairness, categorizing the S2 as anything other than "a mistake" is hard.)

Worth noting the 5200/400/800 version has a hidden stealth sequel inside it, complete with a pretty clever ending... by 1984 standards, anyways. The guy who ported it was ambitious, and had to negotiate with a furious Activision to keep it in. They didn't want anyone thinking the other versions were lesser games. Also, how insane is it that this was only one year before Super Mario Bros, and a decade later we'd be playing Super Metroid?

Dunno if someone already said that, but if you collect all 32 golde bars under 20 minutes, the game actually "ends". It's a victory condition. YOu need to use the warps "underground" to do it, and you need to have a VERY precise route to do it, and still the time limit is very tight, I don't think it's possible to do it with more than 40 seconds left in the timer. The Mega-Drive version of Pitffal Mayan Adventure also has the original Pitfall there, accessible through the same portal or a cheat code as the SNES version. It's also probably on the PC and 32X versions too :)

I knew there was a SNES version, but only because I saw it in the video's opening. That's pretty cool actually. A shame about the muffled audio. That was common, especially when cartridge space was so limited. I'm sure the 2600 port of Pitfall was lower priority as far as sample quality. I was very young in the 1980s and we had a 2600. I probably started playing it around the age of 3 or so. Pitfall was one of the highlights of the library and it was well made for how limited it is. I enjoyed it. Whenever I've heard people talk about Pitfall, whether back in the day or in the years since, it seemed everyone else also played the 2600 version. There really is no excuse for the SNES version to have that horrid audio. It does sound like they just recorded the sound effects from playing the 2600 version and compressed the sound files so it fit on the cartridge, rather than trying to recreate them like most arcade ports on the system. Just weird if that was the case.

Well the SNES sound chip is sample-based, so it would make sense for it to be this way. Guess there wasn't much cart space left for better samples.

Looking at this game now, I can see how incredibly influential it was. All the impossibly hard flick screen platformers where you go around collecting things that came out on the Spectrum in the following years obviously owe Pitfall a great debt. There must be some pretty impressive stuff going on in the code to get so much out of the Atari 2600.

My brothers and friends are around 30-45 and all of us played Pitfall for the Atari 2600 and other classics for the console, but it's possible that depending on where you were at the time, the console and its games weren't available, the Atari 2600 was really popular in some countries, it's also true for specific games that might had not been as popular in all places. Just like many European and South American countries, alongside with Korea all held the Master System as a really popular system, while many other places, this wasn't the case.

I'm from the UK so the 2600 wasn't really a popular system as many people played on home micros.

Yeah, under 50 is an exaggeration. The game itself is 42 years old. I'm 41 years old and I played it the 2600 version when I was like 3, and the MSX version a couple of years later. Probably the same case with a lot of people, even younger than me :D

@@rafaellima83 Yeah, I know the Atari 2600 was still really popular towards the tail end of the 80's as well, games such as Enduro, Keystone Capers, River Raid, Megamania, Pac-Man, Pitfall, Sky Jinx and more were still being played well into the beginning of the 16-bit generation.

It's disappointing that the Coleco/MSX version doesn't play 1:1 like the Atari original, because it looks and sounds the best out of all versions. The running animation in particular is very smooth. I do find it weird that none of the ports added music to the gameplay, especially the C64 version. You know how devs for that system love to go crazy with arpeggios on the SID chip! The Atari 2600 was limited with sound, but every other system here had a 3-voice chip, so I'm not sure why they kept the sounds so basic.

@@RetroCore When I figured out that the different levels progressed distances at different rates, I gave up. I was like, nope, not doing this without a map. It’s cool that it’s that complex, but I just don’t have time to try to map the whole thing out myself. And then I learned there were screens to the left of the starting screen, too. Seriously, throw in some item gating and you’d have a full blown metroidvania here.

Which came first, Jungle King or Pitfall? Because Pitfall looks like a more complex game, especially for the 2600.

while the original is various The Mayan Adventure ports as well, which include the original game like SNES..... That could been a another battle of the ports game. hihi. Im allways liked this game and was one of game we had as kid. its a well designed game with the console limit and carefull uses of random generated screens. Yep when you run in the underground, its skips 3 screens each time.
