In this video we’re tasting two Premier Grand Cru Bordeaux, Lafite Rothschild and Mouton
Rothschild, and comparing them to each other. We’re discussing the history of the chateaux
and their respective vineyards. The video includes original footage from Bordeaux, Mouton
Rothschild’s vineyards and winery. We also open one bottle of each wine from the 2005 vintage
and taste them against each other with our expert sommelier, Stacey Land. Are they worth the
$1,000 price tag? Which wine do we prefer? Watch the show to find out more about these wine

Awesome Content. I have been drinking many 05 vintage throughout these 2-3 years. Some were only just ready to go. But many still have a long life ahead. Bravo .

I just added the 2016 Mouton Rothschild to my collection. Watching your video I want to drink it now but I know I have to wait 20 years or so

I have tried the 1982 Mouton and Lafite side by side and the 1961 Mouton. I must say that the nose of the Mouton's are astonishing!! I do prefer the Lafite on the palate.(maybe it's just my personal preference?)

I’ve had the good fortune of trying Lafite 84 against Mouton 84 and 90; the Lafite blew them away, although the 90 was slightly corked. I don’t think I will ever try either of them again though. But it seemed to me that the Lafite was more complex and nuanced and had quite a bit of power behind a velvety smooth texture.

I had a long time ago a 1967 Lafite and then a 1978. I really enjoyed both. I have in my collection a 2017 and a 2019 Mouton that I bought last year. They will need some more time before I open them and I’ll pick up a few bottles of Lafite to compare them to after they have aged more. I liked your video because I was wondering how they compare to each other

The Duhort Milon of the same vintage punches well above its classification as does Ramage Baptist a cru bourgeois .

Oh damn. I just bought (last week)Lafite 2023 en primeur after battling it against Mouton in my head. I should,have watched this first. I will be dead before 23 gets into drinking window. Now I have to get some of that Mouton too 😕

I have a case (owc) of the '09 Pontet Canet in my cellar (along with ''05, '10, and '16). Can't wait to try it. I've left it alone for now thinking it needs a few more years. You think it's ready?

@@OurPourDecisions the 09 is ready I’ve had 3 bottles in the past 3 years. The 2010 is a monster needs a lot more time. I was lucky enough to do a vertical Pontet-Canet tasting at our local wine merchant with Noe Tesseron the owners son. It was an amazing experience.we had 07,08,09,10,11,12 🍷

what kinda glasses do you guys use?

The glasses in the video are from Williams-Sonoma. We regularly use Riedel glasses and Stolzle glasses we bought at Costco. I've tried several high-end glasses in the past, including Zalto. I love the way they feel but they are so fragile that several of them broke in my hand when I washed them. I finally gave up on them last time I sliced open my hand. The most important thing in my mind is to not use soap or detergent when washing the glasses. We have a small, dedicated dishwasher for glassware that only uses hot water/steam. This avoids any residual detergent or soap smells.

Great wines are the potential to be well-aged, but great wines are just great enough even right after they are launched in the market. They can evolve or change in a good direction, but no impressive performances even after nearly 20 years- EMBRACE THE FACT: it is just not good enough.

My limited experience with Lafite is it is usually a MUCH MORE feminine wine.

it is insane to say, 20 year old wine needs more to open. imagine an non luxury, commodity winery telling client, this wine has no smell because it needs another 20 years to develop aromas? this is just absurd

In my opinion, they shouldn’t have decanted a 20 year old wine for 4 hours! Over-decanting is definitely a thing, and it’s better to open the bottle and enjoy it over a long evening to see how it evolves in the glass. I reserve decanting for very young very robust wines that truly need it.

Wine like this is inherently overpriced because of the value placed on it by demand/status/collectability etc but the quality is indisputable. I don’t think you’re wrong but my take is: at 19 years or at 5 years, it’s not that it’s bad or has no flavors, it’s just not showing its true potential, yet. When you’ve had a 30-40 yr old Bordeaux in that zone then it puts it into perspective, and you can realize then when you likely opened something a little bit early. I get it, waiting for that long to open (or buying an old bottle from auctions) is not for everyone, but that doesn’t change what’s in the bottle or glass.

⁠@@Ruirspirul Imagine a commodity, non-luxury wine being worth drinking in 20 years. They are different wines for different purposes. You cannot lay down a case of a commodity wine from the birth year of your child and expect them to enjoy it when they are 21, 31, or 51. Not absurd at all, a different product for different expectations.

2005 Bordeaux are notoriously backwards and I'm surprised you went with this vintage. Can't comment on Lafite but Mouton was much too young and the only consolation was it wasn't my bottle that was opened. Don't bother even looking at them until after 2030.

Some of the '05s are very much backward as you mention and some are ready for consumption - it really depends on the chateau. The Lafite was clearly too early but the Mouton was more approachable. I asked about the '05 vintage when I visited Mouton last summer, they felt like it was ready to be enjoyed. There's certainly no downside to waiting, however, as it most likely will only continue to improve.

This channel is crap. The host doesn't know a thing about wine and the 'expert' just talks and talks and talks. Not much about the wines themselves but a whole lot of theoretical talk. Not serious. Watch Mathew Horkey and Konstantin Baum. They know what they talk about. They just value and describe the wines. Mostly tasted blind. That's usufull. This is NOT.

Different strokes I guess…I enjoy the channels you mention but also this channel and style. I don’t understand the negativity however…anyone can watch (or not). Breaking down the pretentious barrier around wine is so wonderful imho.
