I bought the Finis Smart Goggle about 18 months ago and my friend bought the Form. After about 10 months they both had problems with battery charging. Both companies. replaced the goggles free of charge. For me the advantage of the Finis is the fact that you can replace the goggle without replacing the electronic viewing chip. This allows you to change goggles in different visibilities OR if one pair gets scratched you don't have to replace the whole unit (just the goggle for $35). ALSO the Finis tracks stroke rate which the Form does not. The biggest advantage of the Form is the heart rate monitor. In running and cycling I rely heavily on "real time" heart rate monitoring. It's nice to have that feature for swimming too. The Finis does not track heart rate. ALSO the Form is a little more "high tech" because it is a true heads-up display. The Finis is a magnified fish eye lens so you have to glance to the left to view the metrics whereas the Form is in front of you the whole time (which can be distracting). Both goggles count laps very accurately. Both goggles give split times (fairly accurately), running times, "set" times and clock time. The Finis identifies what stroke or kicking you are doing. I am not sure if Form has this feature.

Thanks for your comparison, Matt. So timely. I've used Form for a year and last night met the guys who invented the CIYE technology. What I love about smart goggles is that it's a great tool for swimming alone when you're not with a Masters team -- esp during Covid when swimming alone was the only option. Form goggles make me work harder (when I choose to) and the stats are incredible. I can even download the data to an excel doc. What I don't love about Form is the flat front of the lens. When you are looking forward -- esp when sharing a lane -- my exhaled bubbles go right up the front of the goggle limiting my view. And peripheral vision on the Form is non-existent. It was really great when Form added open water and I like seeing my stroke count and distance when OWS. I'm curious about the Finis goggles and your review has me intrigued. Hmm, does it makes sense to use Finis for my pool swims and Form for my SF Bay swims? Thanks again!
@mlegrand
@mlegrand 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it could make sense to use both like that. There are a good bit of limitations to the tech on the Finis side but fit and visibility is a lot better. Although, if you’re able to swim masters now, maybe just go with a basic good fitting goggle? Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

I agree with you. There are things that I REALLY love about the Form goggles. I use them for my Masters swimming as well. I am not sure I will ever be able to go back to counting laps (ha). The ONE thing that is really intriguing about the Finis Goggles, for me, is the ability to swap out a new set of goggles for 35 bucks. Goggles wear out, they don't last forever. I am about 2 years into my pair, and I don't know how long they are going to last. I don't know what I am going to do for my next pair.

The showdown! Very awesome! I like the fact that the goggle on the Finis can be changed out, but the option to switch eyes is a a big win for the Form. The form has a little bit of a functional edge too..I would guess Form is primed for a V2 in the next year, and a $125 - $150 price point would be a pretty solid value (wishful thinking I'm sure). $200+ definitely place both models lower on the priority list for most amateurs, a nice to have but not a game changer.

Im not sure if I just never noticed or if its new but I like the way you have your name on the Swim Bike Run Rinse Repeat logo at the beginning of the video. I really enjoyed this review. I would not be able to use the Finis goggle at all, its too bad that Finis didn't take into account folks with monocular vision. I do have a pair of the Form goggles. They are great for OWS and not having to look and your watch to figure out how far you've gone. The one thing I don't like about them is that you can't adjust the display at all. Like it would be nice to be able to move the actual projected display up or down within the goggle. Again for me, with only vision in 1 eye, it makes it difficult to see past the display when you are swimming with them. Because of this I was really unable to wear them in a pool setting. Anyway, as always another great review! THANKS!~

I'm thinking about getting a pair of smart goggles for pacing and distance (I swim long workouts). I got a Garmin watch recently, and I'm finding it's inaccurate for me. I also wear corrective lenses, so I currently swim with Speedo Vanquisher optical goggles in my prescription. Do you find that both of these goggles are accurate for distance and pacing? What about if you require corrective lenses?
@mlegrand
@mlegrand 2 жыл бұрын
There are no options for prescription lenses with the smart goggles as far as I'm aware at this time. I almost always recommend the Vanquishers for people who require corrective lenses. They are a good option. Most of these devices aren't going to be perfect 100% of the time. They tend to do better if you don't mix up your stroke and you keep a steady rhythm. I have been pretty impressed with the stroke detection of the Form Swim Goggles. Might be interesting to consider. I really do wish you could try mine to see what you think for a few swims. Furthermore, with the fact that the metrics are displayed right in front of you, there's nowhere for us to hide with regards to surfacing inaccurate metrics, which you might get away with if you're tracking your swims with another device or watch that you can't see the display of, while you swim. Hi @matt and everyone else here, does anyone know if the form Google's require you to be using your watch to track as well, or do they do the tracking entirely themselves? I ask as I like using my finis bone conductor headphones to like to audio or music, but that means on my Garmin I can't track the swim. It's a real PITA as I swim faster and longer with my headset, but I can't track it. Unless I buy another watch which sounds exxy. Would love some insight from what you know!
@mlegrand
@mlegrand Жыл бұрын
I’m a bit confused. The Garmin can’t track your swim because it’s sending music to the Finis headphones? Sounds like something I need to make a video about! Yes, these goggles will track lap swimming and distance without a watch or smartphone and then sync it to the smartphone afterwards. If you’re open water swimming, these goggles require the GPS of a Garmin or Apple Watch to be connected. Let me know what you find out as you continue to figure this stuff out. I’ve been wanting to explore swimming headphones for a while. 👍
@EdwinChenLoo
@EdwinChenLoo Жыл бұрын
You are confused. The finis bone conduction is an mp3 player. The watch can track any swim but in open water provides gps location to the form goggles. No goggles needs a watch for pool swimming. Your mp3 player doesn't need a watch or goggles.

Matt is right! The goggles work great in the pool on their own. They track and display your metrics (including stroke rate, stroke count, distance, number of lengths, distance per stroke, pace, and more). You can also use the goggles on their own in open water too. This lets you track your time and real-time stroke rate while you swim. You would also be able to review your average stroke rate and calories in the workout summary after you saved your swim. To see real-time distance and pace metrics in open water, a compatible Garmin or Apple Watch can be connected to the goggles. In both the pool and open water, you can connect a Polar Verity Sense, OH1/OH1 + heart rate sensor to monitor your heart rate in real-time. Please let us know if you have any other questions about our goggles as we'd be happy to share more information!

I would look directly at the Form Swim goggle website for buying info. Also, double check the links in the description. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

I was disappointed by the very limited field of view with the Form goggles. The big depth tends to restrict peripheral vision (including in front of you - i.e. the end of the pool seems to appear out of nowhere).

How can you call them expensive? Inventing technology, waterproofing it, and bringing it to production is truly amazing. Ask any HW manufacturer, profit margins in product are insanely marginal. I think their price is more than legit

Good point. I still think it's fair to call a $200 pair of goggles 'expensive'. Even the same people inventing this technology have agreed that it is an expensive, high-end product.

Lucid cars are expensive. They are probably losing money making them so in your eyes they must be a steal. The European space agency charging a lot more than SpaceX to launch satellites is not expensive too then because their costs are just higher. Smart googles are 10x the price of dumb ones. To some, the value of the data is not worth that much, to some it is ok. Hopefully with time, they recover the initial development cost and unit prices go down to where people wouldn't be calling these expensive.

If you are near-sighted and have to wear contacts to see anything further then 5 feet away, you will not be able to see the screen inside the Form goggles. I tried the Form goggles, and found them unusable. Yes they leak, they feel huge compared to my Speedo and Roka goggles, the fog proof coating lasted about five minutes, and I could not read the screen while wearing contacts. I could however read the screen without contacts, but then I couldn't see anything else, it is kind of important to be able to see where you are going. They do not have any plans right now to have prescription goggles. Side note, the price is way too high.

Yeah, $200 is a lot for goggles. Still, it’s super good to get your feedback on these goggles. I am sure a lot of near-sighted athletes have the exact same questions. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

That's really interesting that you can't see the screen with contacts. I would almost expect the reverse effect for people with myopia.. Do you need reading glasses? Or perhaps find that reading is becoming more difficult/ needing to keep things further away? I don't think there's anything endemic to the HUD that would create an issue, especially considering the proximity should favor nearsighted users. Have you asked your ophthalmologist about it? Prescriptions aren't usually tailored to a focal point that close. Prescription goggles could certainly be a solution but it adds the hassle of having glasses on deck or contacts in your bag. Leaking of course is it's own issue, if they could cut the drag, that would probably put them on terms with most other goggles. Could they shift the computer unit and drag along the temple that could be taken up with the natural shape of the head or swim cap. I think they were a good first pass, but I would like to see a big leap forward in a V2.

@@EverythingIsPhotogenic No I do not need reading glasses as anything within a foot I can read fine. Anything further than a foot, is blurry and cannot see it. Even typing this out, my computer screen, which is just about two feet away, I have to use glasses to read what I am typing. So glasses are currently required to see anything at a distance. The problem when I wear contacts, I cannot read anything within a foot. I have to keep things at an arms reach to be able to read it. The contacts I wear, they are not multifocal contacts, just standard ones that allow me to see at distance. I can get free contact lenses through my insurance, but not the multifocal ones. So unless I pay for the multifocal ones, I stick with the standard contacts. Glad you are back uploading videos, and good luck with the 100 mile Ride for Roswell.

@@Crymerge Thanks for the feedback, Corey. As you likely know from talking with our support team, our goggles were made to be used by as many people as possible. The display is designed so you don’t have to adjust your focus away from your surroundings to read it. Here's where we stand with our current version of the goggles. If you are far-sighted (hyperopia/presbyopia), meaning you can see distant objects clearly, then you should be able to see the display in our goggles well. This includes people that use reading glasses. If you are near-sighted (myopia), meaning you can see nearby objects clearly but distant objects are blurry, then your ability to see the display may be affected. If you are comfortable in the pool without corrective lenses it is likely you'll be able to see the display in our goggles. However, if you need corrective lenses normally when you swim, then it's likely you will need them to see the display. We do not have any plans currently to provide a prescription version of the goggles. Other conditions such as astigmatism, glaucoma, macular degeneration, etc. may affect your ability to see the display. The goggles are reversible, so you can try both eyes if one has better vision than the other. As always, if you have any other questions about our goggles as we'd be happy to share more information! Thanks
