But there is no comparison when it comes to places like Chicago, San Francisco or New York. There is more life, despite the shade.. but that's vogue life for ya.

It was a tradition in that community to call other gay men (and trans women, who were often included in those spaces back when there wasn't such a split between the demographics) "girl" and "she"-- it dates back to the Harlem Renaissance when it was done to protect themselves and each other when talking about relationships in public. :)
