God Bless the greatest generation America ever had. I lost an uncle during the war in the navy. Lost another some years later due to cancer. He served on a ship during testing of a bomb.

Best part of the movie, the Missouri is a massive battleship. It was an honor to be able to walk on the ship.
@robertf34792 ай бұрын
The special effects in the movie were good but couldn't do justice to the real thing. I was able to watch Iowa exercising her main armament in practice and then 3 years later watched as Missouri and Wisconsin unloaded hell with shots in anger during Desert Storm. I was riding a destroyer when we exercised with Iowa, we could out maneuver and accelerate faster than the bigger ship, but she proved faster than we were even with our gas turbine engines. The craftsmen who built those ships knew what they were doing.

When I served at NNPTC in Charleston SC we would take new students on a special tour of the USS Yorktown. We got tours for them from WW2 vets. There was one in particular that would tell stores to the kids of the battles and how they would maneuver. We got to see pets of the ship not on the public tours. There were still some nameplates on equipment that said “Bonhomme Richard” as she was renamed to replace the original Yorktown once she was lost. Amazing stuff.

Oddly enough, this scene and music went through my head going into my neighbor's garage to try firing up her snowblower yesterday after it snowed a bunch. As I turned on the lights and got ready to start it up and get the overhead door open to take it out....even started saying "Thun-Der! Uh huh huh huh huh!" as I'm working. I am SUCH A DUCKING WEEB!!

I still could fire up the equipment I was responsible for in Engineering on the Big E, CVN 65. (83-88) So yeah the old guys could run that ship in their sleep.
@AdmiralYeti80423 ай бұрын
It might never happen, but damn it would be bad ass to see Mighty Mo and New Jersey wake up again with intent to kick some ass.
@sksaddrakk51833 ай бұрын
It will never happen. They tie up too much ressources and are too vulnerable against modern anti-ship systems. The age of battleship was threatened when reliable torpedoes could be deployed from torpedo boats, and it latest was over when carriers could be put to sea in significant numbers... they are a relic of the past. Impressive, yes but outdated
@MM22966Күн бұрын
T'was a silly movie, but bless them for including this.
@fredachildress37283 ай бұрын
The USS Missouri isn't only battleship that the Navy still has saved, but they're restoring the battleship Texas just in case. Folks there are a lot of the older battleships that have been restored and kept ready in case they're needed, by the way, the ships are keeping their original equipment thankfully because in case of a EMP strike they won't be affected unlike the ones now.
@mikeking74703 ай бұрын
I think New Jersey is in dry dock right now and Texas just left. Texas is pretty old but New Jersey is still the queen of the fleet.
@arifwaluyo56183 ай бұрын
What about no bucket?
@grimreaper26252 ай бұрын
The USN will not be using the USS Texas as we still have two IOWA Class battleships and the yards to make new ones if needed. But it would be to costly to get a WW1 battle ship up to date.
@robertf3479Ай бұрын
@@grimreaper2625 We still have all FOUR Iowa class plus North Carolina, Massachusetts and Alabama. All of these will need a lot of work to be made ready for sea again, 2 years minimum for the Iowa class, up to four years for the other 3 ships. All seven would need a lot of main powerplant work and need to be rearmed, the guns including the 16" are so old that I wouldn't trust them to fire.
@jenniferbeyer6412Ай бұрын
What ship fought in the Desert wars? Can't remember. But seeing the Mighty Mo out in the ocean is spectacular. And the old tech will be able to fight after a nuclear war. The EMP won't damage these ships.

A lot of people saying that this ship is outdated, but it’s cannons are still able to do a lot of damage in today’s warfare, and given that there’s only one turret on the rear of the ship, you could put the vertical missile system like we have on some of our modern warships onto the rear of the battleship And you could also add a laser weapon system to the ship that would make it entirely capable in today’s warfare.
@toddnesbitt31134 ай бұрын
We had one in Desert Storm that most definitely made a point, warheads on foreheads until they get bored.
@user-bu2ro8vg8b3 ай бұрын
It would cost billions to bring a WWII battleship up to combat again. Re learning the how to run it would take years. Then there is the ammo problem or the guns learning how to make it again. I doubt any has been produced for at least 60 years. Not to mention how many sailors say 1500 at least. It was a good silly film but getting a WWII battleship ready to sail would not take hours, more like years.

In real life, they actually keep all of our battleships capable of going to war again just in case if we need them. Our battleships are able to deliver a strong below, and they are also able to take a hit while our modern cruiser and modern destroyer naval vessels for example can be sunk with a single tomahawk missile.
@tommyhunter18173 ай бұрын
Would take the Navy ten years to get the Missouri back to active duty and they did it in 30 min.

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but they cut the anchors for the ship and then use them later on to turn left. I've been to the USS Missouri, the chains are on the left...they cut those anchors off. I know, I know, it's a movie. It is, and a great movie at that, but seriously...continuity.
