I am sure Bill Greenwood was on board for that review, he was an uncle of mine. Your opinion really sums it all up, that although unwanted by the Admiralty from 1943 to 1945, she justified the cost, she was the tonic the country needed after 1945, and even ABC was at the launch with his familiar cheerfulness.

I was working in HM Royal Naval Dockyard, Portsmouth when Vanguard was decommissioned and waiting to be scrapped. I went on board for a walk around and to see what I could salvage as a souvenir. I ended up in the engineers' workshop where I found some brand new HSS Cobalt lathe tool-bits. I still have most of them, they are top quality and work well. What a shame she was scrapped.

As a Yank I have to say you Brits built some of the best looking warships around. Vanguard, Hood, and my favorite Brit warship HMS Warspite.
@nightlightabcd
@nightlightabcd 9 жыл бұрын
It's too bad that the HMS Hood was not a real battle ship but a cruiser, but was asked to do a battle ships job. She was being armored but never got around to applying more armor to her fore deck, which was her Achilles heal. May those that served aboard her rest in peace.
@MegaFaery
@MegaFaery 9 жыл бұрын
nightlightabcd It's incredible to think that the Royal Navy lost the battle of the Denmark Strait purely because of mechanical and engineering blunders, and the poor crews of Hood and Prince of Wales had to pay the price for it. Lesson learned (hopefully).
@Deevo037
@Deevo037 8 жыл бұрын
+Tim C Their only real blunder was succumbing to a need to have ships operational. Hood missed out on vital upgrades to her deck armor in the rush to have her operational and Prince of Wales was basically fresh from the builders yard with an under trained crew and not even having completed sea trials.

Holland fought a miserable battle, that didn't help matters. His insistence on radio silence meant that instead of crossing the german's T, he had to chase to catch up and never had a chance to fire all his guns at Bismarck, and the cruisers did not take part in the battle. Plus, he mistakenly ordered firing at Prinz Eugen instead of Bismarck. And he didn't send in destroyers for a torpedo attack -- that's what did in Scharnhorst. None of that would have added armor over Hood's magazines but it might have given them more of a fighting chance.

Trouble with Vanguard she had no history other than being the last battle ship built in the UK. Warspite on the other hand served through 2 world wars and was a true dreadnaught so in terms of historic naval significance far more important

***** Ahh, but the thing about preserving technology isn't always about military victory. Vanguard was British Battleship design and engineering at its zenith. The biggest, best and last. The sort of thing that should have been preserved for coming generations to visit. We've spent decades scrapping our heritage in many areas, it needs to stop. The Yanks have the right idea, mooring an old carrier in New York harbour, etc., etc.
@richardcosstick7345

***** Yes but what you have to remember is that Vanguard had some of her 15' Guns from HMS Ramillies and I think the other R Class Battleships. The idea of keeping one of these is I agree fantastic, but back in 1948 when most were broken up, our Country had no money to preserve them. Somehow Belfast was kept, but of course she is small compared with a true Battleship. I would have kept the Ramillies, she was at D-Day and fired 1002, 15'' shells the most of any ship ever. Not even Warspite did that, think she went back to Pompey for repairs after the first day or so.

When you read about the Vanguard's stability and seaworthiness you realise what an impressive ship it was, if it had been made a years earlier it would have been the most powerful ship in the Atlantic, and one of the most advanced in the world.

@@tennoshenaniganizer9234 Yes you`ve got a good point there. Not one battleship left from what was once the greatest navy in the World - unbelievable but not unsurprising. The mindset in the 1950`s was generally very narrowly focused with no imagination for preservation for future generations.

@@paullewis2413 British rail steam giants to disappear off the face of the earth in 1968, yet no plan to stop sale to steam enthusiast and no plan to ensure the engine could not be used on the British rail line - the State attempted cuckoo land and was brought down to earth by market forces serving the public interest.

@Alexander Challis My comment was meant simply to relate that the government failed to foresee the type of action Alan Peglar spearheaded, buying the Flying Scotsman and obtaining both storage and right to steam on British rail. This was to highlight the negligence so often apparent to consider the realities, not just the immediate agenda, yet you reply alleging that same negligence against me. You will find in my comments generally a general agreement with scrapping policies, and statement that more important things need preservation, for example the understanding that war is cruel. Your comment is therefore obviously based on misunderstanding. And I was aware that the public generally are preoccupied with money issues, which is one reason governments are. I would simply reiterate that the government was in cuckoo land concerning British rail, and while I do not advocate anyone falling in love with the steam ,locomotive they purchased, at least those who live in that cuckoo land do not harm society, governments that take us all for granted do, because listening is the last thing on the governments mind, and the only listening you get is from the parasites calculating who will be their next pile of scrap - and the media itself is guilty of that process, telling you whatever serves the industry, not what needs to be said.

Some of the most gentlemanly comments on this site are coming from our American cousins. I cringe at the foul-mouthed individuals who claim to be British - Jesus! where have all the manners gone? When I was at school back in the 1950's over our classroom blackboard was the painted legend, 'Manners maketh Man!' And, our little biddy of a teacher, all four foot ten, or so, made damn sure we understood it - otherwise we got a belt across the knuckles with her ruler. Her teachings have remained within me ever since. So, why don't we settle down gentlemen and enjoy the memory of these great ships without the vitriolic comments and the rudeness that goes with it!

You know the level of controversy concerning this ship that the Admiralty did not approve of from 1943? There are British government decisions good and bad, and controversy almost every time, and many people cannot identify the good from the bad, not least because of politics but media. I wonder if that is not an invitation to many to express little respect as you relate. Manners are quite elementary components but heirarchy often uses them to appear civilized, and it is the public who suffers it. You can lecture people, but remember what they are up against, an extraordinary bombardment of hype!

(With the benefit of historical hindsight) Vanguard was almost new, when she went to the breaker's yard, a victim of economic duress and the advent of missiles. However, had Britain emulated the US and mothballed her, then at the time of Reagan & Thatcher, can you imagine how handy she would've been: on the gun-line, off Port Stanley (1982), in close-company with the USS New Jersey, off Beirut (1983) and again in 1991, together with the USS Wisconsin, off Kuwait (the inter-navy (BB) rivalry would've been a laugh too!).

In respone to the many comments about old preserved warships, a very fine example is the cruiser "Aurora" (launched c. 1899), in St. Petersburg, Russia. It is exceptionally well preserved, I bielieve with a new bottom. As for keeping BBs in service, they took too many sailors to operate and were too expensive to run, although rather well protected against EXOCETs and their ilk, which did much damage to the British ships around the Falklands in 1982.

From what I have been able to learn. Vanguard was a modification Of the King George V Class. You can see Vanguard's layout for her DP Guns are like KGV Class. Apparently during Operation Menace (a NATO exercise in the early 1950's) HMS Vanguard handled the rough North Atlantic sea's much better than any of the US Iowa's did. Vanguard was a tremendous Seaboat. Spare a thought for her predecessor though which blew up at anchor in Scapa Flow in 1917. The Current HMS Vanguard is a Ballistic missle submarine. Vanguard is a wonderful name for a ship I think. Great video mate - Thanks

The thing is guys, we learned a lesson in WW2. The days of the battleship were over. They cannot survive alone, and can be "pecked" at mercy of smaller faster ships. Truth be told, no many battleships survived WW2 and those that did were sold for scrap pretty quickly to help pay off the war debt. I wish they could turn some of the T42s that are being scrapped as we speak into museum ships.

Zarquon53 You are very correct. How ever, their where several major difference between the unbuilt Lion Class and the Vanguard Class. The biggest was internal damage protection. The Lion was KGV class with bigger naval rifles in a different turret layout. The lessons learned in the naval battles in the PTO caused many changes to her damage control design. After these changes where made, Vanguard looked an KGV modification, but in reality she was a different beast all together.

i know that twin turrets were always prefered because of the simplicity and reliability. less guns but a higher rate of fire. remember reading that the county class heavy cruisers had a few teething problems with their twin 8" turrets but once they were sorted out they were formidable ships. a very high rate of fire and a good range and able to penetrate heavy armour.

Lovely video mate, of my favourite of all battleships. And the pity for me is I lived in London 9 years - never went to see the Belfast. Must go to the USA one fine day and have a look at the BBs.

@TheGsxstage1 The turrets came from Courageous and Glorious,the guns were from the pool of relined guns and had been fitted to other ships as well as C and G .

Far superior movie.The Bismarck film has good model work but should have been made a few years before when the KGV class were still in reserve.Also it was slated by veterans as in the film Bismarck shot down a few Swordfish and sunk a destroyer.

There are pros and cons to Battleships. Pros; 1) Huge and so can be used to carry vast numbers of troops. 2) Relativly quick so can get to trouble spots relativly quickly. 3) Huge firepower... can destroy pretty much everything. Cons; 1) Very large targets. If a Battleship was designed to be; ASW, AA, AS and GP then it may work as it would be able to operate on its own but if it was used only as a battery machine then it would need its own taskforce that would be better spent on an ACC.

And so you should be. She's a beauty - just like her sisters. At least America had the sense to preserve these fine ships for future generations. If only Britain had done the same.

Continued. Bent shaft on POW destroyed the packing glands through 5 bulkheads all the back to the turbines.IIR the collier/carrier Langley was the first ship with TED.Good idea probabley to far ahead of its time.Common on modern RN warships with gas turbine/Diesel drive T 23,T45 and new carriers.IIR one of the USN carriers Lex? was pluged into a land elec grid on the US West coast.Usefull feature.

No gun ever was more proven than the 15"/42cal,the updates to the guns in effect made it completely modern,have read recently that the ADM MK10 firecontrol was the most advanced ever fitted and the radar fit was something else,in every way Vanguard was more than worthy to be the last RN Battlewagon.

Maybe I can shed some light on this with the above info.V was designed to use guns and turrets in storage these were modernized,elevation was increased to 30ded loading was altered so 6crh shells could be fired,flash protection was improved and RPC was fitted.One other mod was made, the recoil system was beefed up so super charges could be fired this increased the MV to 805mps in the event s/charges caused heavy wear and as peace had arrived no S/charge was ever fired.

If BAE do a good job on the railgun then the battleship concept may come back with a bang.

@USSWISCONSIN64 The Iowa class were and still are the ultimate Battleship design(that was built),they were 2/3k faster had 9 larger guns firing heavy 2700lb shell,the 5/38 DP gun was the best ever made,deck armour was very good,turret armour was superb,Vanguard had superior side belt armour and according to the American author Norman Friedman superior surface fire control,overall Wis was the better ship it cost 5 times more than Vanguard.I love all Battleships.

I wish they had saved one of the KGV Battleships and HMS Warspite as she was the ship with the most honors, it just makes you wonder why HMS Belfast was kept and not one of these tremendous ships, but I also wish that at the time we had built the N3 class battleships with 18" guns and that the KGV had been fitted with more than 14" guns.

I went on this when I was about 5! I don't remember a lot, but the gun barrels had some sort of caps on them, which didn't seem very sensible to me. The real hit though was the galley, that had the same type of bacon slicer as our grocer at home!

She was also the only British Battleship never to fire a shot in anger , instead usually used as a Royal Yacht. The Vanguard went to Faslane for breaking

Can go along with cracking as BB,s were prone to it.Rodney/Nelson are good examples both were prone to shock and blast damage.One story claims that a full broadside could cause interference to the optic nerves. Also IIR Vanguard only carried enough turret crew to man one main turret, at the time it was used as a Royal Yatch.

Easy if you bother to watch for even 10 seconds you will see that Vanguad was launched in Nov 1944 it was therefore the last BB launched.She was also the RN's last BB.
