Answer me this, why do sci fi writers care about VLS? Like, in space combat what even is Vertical? Star Gate SG1 and Atlantis, which I love, made a big deal about the Daedalus class being armed with VLS, and I remember thinking a mix of "who cares and oppsie if they attack you from the ventral aspect"

I love the inclusion of naval terminology like "Pocket Battlestar" a great call back to the German Deutschland-class of Pocket Battleships

"Pocket Battleship" isn't naval terminology, it's a post war nickname for them, their original description was "Panzerschiff" or simply armored ship, until being reclassified as Heavy Cruiser. The british and americans classified them as Battlecruiser. Sorry to be the smartass here

@@thatsnomoon4221 The Orion class certainly bears no resemblance to the Deutschland cruisers. The Orion's are specialty ships that in a modern navy would be called stealth destroyers not heavy cruisers.

@@thatsnomoon4221 It's all good, I should have been more precise with this community :) SciFi seems to play fast and loose with ship classifications, I remember watching B5 and wondering why "Destroyers" were larger and heavier fleet units than a "Heavy Cruiser" The ability to launch strike craft sure does make the Orian hard to classify.

Spacedock exclusively has the inside track with the production team on The Expanse- so much so that the Fandom pages for the ships featured on the show are basically just transcribed from their respective Spacedock episodes. We really need ones for the Pella and the MCRN heavy frigate from Season 5, and hopefully any new ships we'll see in the (hopefully not) final season next month.

The agreement to produce that content was terminated when Amazon purchased the property and restarted production of the show. It is unlikely that kind of inside access/content creation capability (They literally wrote some of the lore in those videos) will return.

@@logion567 truman-class being referred to as Nathan hale-class it's now generally accepted that it was a production mistake, and as for the Barkeith yeah they did recon it but that's nothing new for sci-fi and plus there is a number of plausible reasons, the battleship was destroyed, damaged beyond repair, decommissioned in post war demilitarization etc.

@@AnthonyJ504 they will be wrapping up the story that concludes in book 6, Babylon's ashes. Based on what has come out so far, it will fit nicely. The remaining three novels will not be part of the Amazon series

I never liked the fact that it only had one landing/launch bay door. One bolter and you'll slam into the back wall.

Well it does have Vipers launch tubes for Vipers (but real pity for the Raptors) Do note that the Valkyrie is about 700m-ish (aka half Galactica size) with her flight pods around 300-400m-ish and the Osiris is about 300m-ish meaning that the ship itself is a flying Valkyrie flight pod with a head and guns bolted on

The only odd thing about this is why its designated as a Battlestar.. the Colonial fleet has other ship designations like cruisers, destroyers, escorts.. This is clearly a frigate or a light cruiser/destroyer.. its like if in WW2 i do a small lighty armoured warship wich favours stealth and speed over firepower or armor and call it a pocket battleship

Probably because it fufill the role that of a Battlestar even tho it dont look or work like a Battlestar Battlestar are like battle carrier, come in and drop a frak load of jets then shoot which is what the Osiris do but with another style of war Do note i also dont like the Osiris designation

In real life, military classifications are arbitrary. The Dunkerque class and Kongo class battleships were really battlecruisers, the battlecruiser HMS Hood was really a fast battleship, the Alaska class heavy cruisers were really battlecruisers, the modern US LHDs are really light carriers, modern British and American destroyers are basically cruisers, and so on.

@@Cailus3542 I wouldnt call a LHD a light carrier when it only can carry STOVL aircraft like the Harrier or F35.. when the old light carriers could carry the same type of aircraft as the fleet carriers..only less.. a LHD is after all a helicopter carrier with a landing dock for amphibious assaults..not just a smaller carrier

Space Battleship Yamato has the UX Class in the Garmillas Imperial Astro Fleets..wich is utterly literally a submarine....in space. In Babylon 5 the Hyperion class cruiser was also inspired on submarines and naval designs (Ironically her creators said that Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers was an inspiration when designing the Hyperion)

You could probably combine these with the Manticore Corvettes and have a pretty devastating Hit-and-Run type fleet.

@@Mobius_118 Not very good for the campaign, but the idea is really good for skirmish mode. Use the Orions with torps to get close, basically joust and pass in between the enemy formation, then use your Manticores armed with nukes to hit and kill weakened enemy ships.

I have had them used like that against me, and it was pretty effective, while I focused on the main battlestar group I got outflanked by four of these little thingies and their ruthless torpedo salvos were enough to blow a game deciding hole in my formation. It came down to the wire, and if I had an extra Jupiter it would've been my win, but I've messed up and paid for it

You forgot to mention that part of it's stealth design is the ships heatsink feature, that renders the ship invisible from a thermal perspective too.

In deadlock, these ships are a ton of fun to work with. They're great for sneaking behind a fleet and finding a priority target (e.g. base star), then promptly destroying or crippling it with a nuke before rejoining the rest of the main fleet.

It’s actually based on the original concept art of the First Battlestar Galactica way back in the 70’s but it was passed over. I always thought it would’ve been cool back in the 70s that Galactica would discover a derelict fleet of these types of Ships later to be used as A support fleet for the Battlestar

The strangest thing about the Orion in Deadlock is that they also stripped off a majority of its armor, making it resemble the Post-War Galactica more than its B&C appearance.

@@Mobius_118 Could it be stripped off- or never installed...? (Like, you make a small ship, why bother with the armor when maneuverability and stealth are its main defensive options. Leave that armor for the big boys who are supposed to be taking punches instead of the little guys who couldn't take a hit either way.)

I get the impression that the Orion was a hasty refit of a civilian ship since most of the resources for Colonial Fleet would've been going towards refitting the surviving Jupiter IIs, hence the protruding bridge, extremely small size, and lack of flight pods.

I always saw this ship as a BSG mix of a Nuclear Submarine and an Aegis Cruiser so it is not for asymmetric warfare more as a electronic scouting and infiltration platform. Love the video though.

Hey Spacedock, I have an incredibly important question here. There is a webnovel I have read a fair portion of named "The Legendary Mechanic". In said novel starting at chapter 536 and ending at chapter 543, there is a combination of atmospheric and non-atmospheric combat sequences between several frigate class ships and a personal stealth ship siding with the MC and 11 enemy ships of assault class followed by a number of other ships. The MC is a mechanical specialist and ends the combat sequences by invading the enemy databases using his 'hacking' skills and shuts down all systems on the enemy ships. My question is, what are your thoughts on the usage of virtual intrusion in space combat?

A flotilla of three would be idea for deep penetration strikes against Cyon infrastructures and logistic chains. About the only issue is having the supplies available. That may be remedies by prepositioned caches.

Is it ever confirmed that the Orion class has a battlestar designation? In deadlock it's classed as a stealth frigate, which is way more appropriate for its role. The descriptor "pocket battlestar" could just be because it has the capability of launching vipers and covering them with flak fire. But these might serve as a complement for its tasks of subterfuge and surveillance, much akin to modern day submarines

Haven't played Deadlock in a while... did they patch the game and re-classify the Orion class as a battlestar? When the DLC with this ship first came out, it was classified as a light frigate; no flak or ordinance interceptor missiles; light gun batteries.. IIRC, they even went out of their way in the description to note that "pocket battlestar" was a derogatory term for the class, based on it being used in ways outside its designed purposes. In short, they nerfed it. It creates a weird problem, because Deadlock is supposedly canon but... so is Blood & Chrome? I'd lean the former, as I think B&C just put too much 'stuff' onto one ship.

I'd say use it in a similar way to a Manticore Corvette with expanded abilities. It's stealth ability is not perfect and if in Dradis range will be detected by enemy ships, but they'll get a serious debuff to accuracy when targeting it in stealth mode. but the Orion can't fire weapons or launch squadrons in stealth either, but in can stay in stealth longer while in a defensive posture. So, use it as a forward DRADIS picket to identify the enemy, and then either circle around while in stealth and de-cloak to pincer and harass the enemy, or pull it behind your primary battle line and let it pitch in wherever needed. And if it's getting too much fire, set it to stealth mode and flee

Hate to be THAT guy, but as far as I'm concerned this isn't a battlestar. I see it more as a cruiser. Great vid as usual however.

Good comparison would be the British invincible class “ through deck cruisers” of the falklands campaign

@@matthewcaughey8898 Not really? The Invincibles were always aircraft carriers, and were known as such. Nobody called them cruisers.
