This looks like it would be an excellent resource for Battletech campaign play. An Alpha Strike solo campaign would be pretty fun.

My interpretation of the "Must be defeated twice with the same roll of the dice" is that in a single rolled dice pool you must have rolled two different ways to defeat that encounter, but you only lock in one of those sets of dice to clear the encounter. It's like the card is forcing you to confirm the hit since your facing units equipped with EW suites and you must burn through the counter measure noise to get an effective lock. (Ex1. You have the same encounter seen in the playthrough; you need to get a results of 3 two different ways on one die roll. You roll 4 dice with results 1,2,3,4. You re able to defeat the encounter with the 3 by itself and also the 1 and 2 combined. [Here, your targeting solution was solid enough to defeat the EW.] You lock the 3 on the encounter to give yourself the most dice possible for the next encounter and continue play. Ex2. Same as above, but your dice roll result is 3,4,4,5. While you meet the card's requirement with the 3, you have no second way to beat that requirement. [Here, the OpFor's EW gear defeated your targeting solution.] Because of this, you fail the encounter and play continues accordingly.)

"Must be defeated twice with the same roll of the dice." If you need a 6, you either need 3,3 or 2,4 or 5,1 and if you have four dice, you need to have those combinations. If you only have 2, you can only get it with 2,4 (which is also 4,2) or something along the same lines. This is a unique dynamic that I have not seen often in games.

All the merc commands have very flavorful special abilities.

the robinson planetary assault allows you to complete the contract without using your entire dice pool. by declaring that you will complete the contract on the next encounter you only have to defeat THAT encounter to complete. so having dice left over is ok.

My big takeaway on this is the "censure" token is for the people with the highest reputation to give them a bit of a handicap so that the people with lower rep can catch up. The "nobility support" token is for the players who have no c-bills so they can get something. Equipment seems to be extremely important in this game, so really, early on, players should probably be trying their best to beat encounters and grow their equipment and c-bill pools. Finally, I think that the "you must beat this encounter twice" effect means that you literally have to beat the encounter by locking 2 sets of dice that equal the encounter number. If you have one dice left, you're probably screwed. but if you get the encounter early, you could potentially lock a bunch of dice without needing to utilize much of your equipment.

That Hesperus Assault makes sense, narratively. It's a very heavily fortified planet. You will bring a ton of stuff, but lose it to heavy casualties.

IMO defeated twice means getting the target number with two sets of dice on a single roll. LB-X looks like an insurance policy in case you need a 7+ and only have one die, or you need a 1 and you rolled anything but and want two extra chances at it. When I saw that I was getting this through the KS, I was most excited for the dice to add to my pool. All those nice colors... Seeing it in action, I may actually play it. I'll bet that you could use this to shape your campaigns. GM creates the Op-For and mission type based on the contract and the encounter. Use the target numbers to determine PV/BV of the NPCs.

I dig the idea of this game now. Have friends coming over for GenCon week+weekend. We can role this the night before and drank.

Light electronic warfare lance seems you roll like normal and with the dice you've rolled, you have to get 3 twice. You pick your first dice to beat three and with what's left over, you have to meet three again.

"End contract" as in Planetary Assault Dieron is the same as "escape clause", not the same thing as "Complete the contract" as in Garrison Duty. That means that for Planetary Assault Dieron, if you think you want to cash out you'll have to do it one encounter early so you have enough dice/equipment to handle the forced encounter or you'll default. If you complete the contract normally, by locking all your dice, then there's not an additional encounter.

My interpretation of "defeat twice with the same roll" is you have to pay exactly that cost, twice. So if it's a five cost, the total cost is ten, to be paid with exactly 5 + exactly 5.

"Must be defeated twice with the same roll of the dice" To me that means if you need to beat a 3, it really means with your dice get a 6 because that's defeating the target number twice with the one roll.

Loads of your battle report videos I have only heard and not seen and it has helped me with the rules just having heard the progress of your games. Think I will pick up a copy of this once it arrives in the UK next year probably!

I would think 'beat the number twice' would be having two dice groups of 5 locked up, if the target number was 5. If it was just beating it by double, then the number would be 10 in which case a 4 and a 6 would beat it. But having two groups of 5 makes a die roll of 6 useless, but two 5 rolls is a win. That's how I read it. Great looking game, can't wait to get my hands on it!

I just got mine today. Under Default contract it says you keep C-bills for encounters under compleated contracts but not any under the defaulted contract. I would assume a contract effect lasts for that contract and not subsequent ones. I would think defeat with same roll would mean two sets of dice so like two sets of three would need two threes and would lock both dice. Honestly I feel it is a missed oppertunity to not make this an alpha strike card game. I do think their is an oppertunity for an expansion or two if they decide to add more content. 1. An expansion set durring a time the inner sphere was somewhate united, like the clane invasion or the Jihad. A single contract is drawn and each player draws an encounter and tries to defeat it. The player that locks all dice first then gets C-bills and Reputation. All other players are considered to have used Escape Clause to pay out any compleated encounters if they did not default. End contract if all players use Escape Clause or Defaulted. This would require each player have a set of dice. Their would be no securing a contract as all players are constantly engaged, so focused more on multiplayer. 2. A Succesion wars setting. In this you dent have generic reputation but faction specific ones for each house. The player to first 10 reputation in a house every contract will also have a house card drawn to see what house its success goes to. A Comstar one wont give reputation but might give the player that beats it a special ability like removing reputation from another player. Would make the game longer but i think it would be neat, maybe focused more on solo play. Both could add new themed contracts, encounters, equipment, and Command Cards. Also I feel a falier condition is needed for solo play. Like if you default you lose an equal amount of reputation, if you cant you pay an amount of C-bills equal to reputation that would be gained if you cant you lose. Or maybe a random "off screan" mercinary unit compleats your contract via Secure contract, each default you take posibly pooshing an ai to winning as they auto succesed. In solo play I also discard the Noble Patron and Censure token after each turn their effect was used, otherwise you would always have both in solo play.

Noble Patronage goes to the player with the fewest c-bills if it is a tie you choose who gets the token. The Northwind Highlanders only get the bonus rep on the Planetary Assault: NORTHWIND!

"Bearing it twice with a single roll of the dice": If the card is worth 3, you have to make a 3 twice out of the same roll. Thom would have needed to roll two 4s to beat his card. Thom even pointed this out when Aaron rolled two threes at 54:56 in the video. Quoting Aaron "I would have gotten this guy." meaning the Light EW Lance.

I personally would have liked the equipment to be themed as forces instead: artillery battery, scout lance, light aero lance, union dropship, etc. same bonuses but different theme. That way I feel like I’m building up my force from a company/battalion to a larger force.

Could this be built with other Battletech Enconters. If they sell this one really well. I do hope they see this and see if they fix or clear up some of the questions you ran into while playing.

I’m confused, how many encounters are there per contract? Unlimited? You only finish the contract when you “lock” (use up) all your dice? It seems super hard to finish contracts and not very fun at the beginning. Maybe I’m misunderstanding. Video was fun to watch anyway though!

When you extend your contract, it is a new contract, so you can maintain in between but Planetary Assault: Hespersus disallows this.
