Battling My Cross Country Demons - Welcome back to another chapter in my journey with Jam. Today, we're gearing up for a clear round cross-country event - a rare event to find in the equestrian world. This outing follows our confidence knock at Vale View during our last cross-country session. The mission? Rebuild our confidence and tackle Jam's spookiness head-on.
But there's a twist! This time, I've got my GoPro strapped on, giving you a unique view from Jam's perspective. You'll see firsthand the challenges we face as we navigate the course.
Join us as we confront our demons and work towards overcoming obstacles together. It's bound to be an insightful ride for all of us.
Don't forget to hit that subscribe button and turn on notifications to stay updated on our progress. And be sure to check out my other videos for more updates on Jam and our journey. Let's keep pushing forward together!

I don’t usually comment on videos, but was reading some of the responses on here and just wanted to say you are doing such a good job. Confidence is a fragile thing and it’s easy for others to comment telling you what to do and not. Jam is such a talented horse and she’s a credit to you x

Hey Meg! I know you work with premier performance and I’m really happy for you. Just from personal experience I found their calmers and calming cookies had certain ingredients which made my ponies incredibly spooky!! So weird- worked on my ex racer, but my highland and warmblood were spooking at every single jump I presented at. Just a thought but sure you’ve got it sorted xx
@JorlayRaven

My OTTB got really spooky and weird from calming supplements too, if given for a long period of time. Common side effect that not enough people know about
@highlandpony_1641
@highlandpony_1641 2 ай бұрын
@@JorlayRaven yes! The best “calmers” are largely magnesium which is used for its calming effects and a good muscle relaxant for the horse! Unfortunately I found the calming cookies are full of sugar- which made my lot hallucinate 🫠 took them off everything and stripped back to the basics and they’re all happy again! Think in this modern age we over think horse care, especially in supplements🙈

@@JorlayRavenwow so weird never knew this! why is it a side effect of calming supplements??? is it because they build up tolerance and then need more and more to stay calm?

It's likely because most callers have magnesium in them and if you overload a horse on magnesium it makes them more spooky! Same thing with tytrophen!!

Might also be that horses are prey animals that (in the wild) need to be alert. If there's something in their system trying to calm/slow them down they might get nervous. Just a theory, though, so don't take my word for this

Such a good job. You should be so proud of yourself! Your pony knows her job. This is all schooling and training. There's nothing wrong with pulling out of the combination on first attempt. You reset yourself and jumped it well. Sounds mad but after a nasty fall I had, but I didn't realise I was scared to fall off again until I fell off again. And nothing bad happened. I wonder if this is something that's in the back of your mind with Jam? My friend also had a massive dip in her confidence last year and ended up trying hypnotherapy and it's had a massive improvement on her. It's something that may be worth trying to give yourself a boost. You can do this. You've done it. Look how many people believe in you and support you! Keep flying high 💪

You need to take you and that pony hunting. Take on what ever comes and work out the stride as you approach. No show jumping each fence and simply riding by the seat of your pants. Or some team chasing. Anything to get your head in the space. You know how to ride a combination, you know how to ride a fence, you know how to ride a horse. Your urge is making her spooky. You know all this.

I try to think that theres no way I can get perfect strides to every fence so I need to learn to ride those close and long take-off as as well and try and be as balanced as possible too. Every pro competition you watch these amazing riders get the "wrong" stride all the time but they ride it so balanced its not that big of a deal. And I have always felt youve ridden the little wonky strides well! And as you said when you watch it back they are not that bad at all! Loved seeing you out on this cool veneue and I also feel like you beeing mad at the circle is a huge improvment!

These look like a brilliant opportunity, over time, to regain confidence, low pressure environment. Admittedly I do dogs in a R+ context (cookie pusher) underqualified & horses are very diffrent neurobiology context. Botentially with advice next season good opportunity to start working towards a snaffle, if nothing else a learning opportunity as you have better control, & choice in this actvity. No time pressure. In a dog I'd talk about over arousal (excitement and spookyness), bringing arousal down. Classical conditioning, specfically emotional. Jam is a horse, I wouldn't have a clue how to bring arousal down. Multiple factors why she was less strong. No dressage, showjumping prior?, slower pace? PTSD (type symptoms) can be really challenging. Your doing really well. I stopped riding after 2 bad experiences years apart and then finding out about my spine & consequent risk. Your really Brave. I'm still building myself back up from a severely reactive dog, I myself ended up with a classically conditioned emotional response to the sight of dogs (fear). Welfare wise & training I currently have a dog walker for my Assistance Dog prospect, he doesn't associate my fear with dogs. Done him a world of good) dogs are not horses. (PTSD was from homelessness)

Have you considered sending Jam to a trainer to fill the holes you've left (no shade, she just only knows you) and give you more confidence in her ability? It could even advance her past your ability. Again I'm not saying you're not doing the right thing, just that a higher level professional trainer could take her further without you having to get out of your comfort zone.
