Yeah, I can't stand it when people who film themselves constantly, even in difficult conditions, and spend countless hours editing the footage into something that's enjoyable.. I can't stand it when they actually try to get monetarily compensated for the time and work they put into creating this thing I enjoy *for free* 🙄

I feel you, am not sure about how sincere it all is. Too much choreographed, never looking tired or without looking ready for dinner, etc. At the same time it is filmed very nicely, nice boat. If there is a dude on board filming it I would not be surprised. It just could be the way she wants it to be, polished. @@evananderson1455Landscape photographer here. Most creative people spend hours doing what they’re doing because THEY enjoy it. They don’t do it for you; if you like the final result, that’s just a bonus (I don’t even publish half of the photos I process). And the people who do it for attention, likes and profit… you can usually tell; most of them have no signature style and produce whatever they think will be popular, often copying each other.

I noticed that too. Securely fixtured to the boat, the barrel looks simple, and sturdy. I would add a few baffles inside the barrel, because the free surface effect on the water inside the barrel worsens the boat's stability.

Aww, thank you for such a thoughtful comment! 💕 And hahah, I know, tripods are HEAVY 😅 I'll pretend that I'm going for an analogue look. To be honest, and this is a bit embarrassing to admit, I had no idea how shaky the footage would be until months later when I transferred it to the computer. Going from only photo to video is really a steep learning curve.

​@@veronicaskotnes, to carry on from @florianlewanskowski186s' comments, From a purely "Tech" point of view [ you have the "artistic" side covered, as correctly stated by @florianlewanskowski186} ] instead of carrying a tripod, consider a good monopod, you'll be amazed at the difference, if held correctly, great pans can be achieved as well as steady "Locked off" shots. I would also strongly recommend considering the use of ND filters. For video, this means you can lock in a shutter angle that keeps in sync with multiples of 25 frames per second [ 25, 50, 100 and {240 not strictly a multiple of 25 but can be used on the same timeline} ] and it'll take care of the blown highlights in some of your vista shots. Blown highlights are nearly impossible to recover but recovering shadows, or blacks, can be much more successful. If you're new to video editing, might I suggest you download the free version of BlackMagic Resolve. If you have the money, purchase the Studio version as it unlocks a lot of things the free version doesn't do, and it's a one off purchase, good for a lifetime. It may well overwhelm you initially, [be assured though, very simple editing is possible as a novice] however, it's something you will grow into...and not out of, and if you keep up videoing, in 5 years, you'll be pleased you did so. Of course I have no idea of your video setup [camera etc], however, if at all possible, shoot any scenes where you think you might like to zoom in, or pan, in 6K. This gives you the ability to pan and zoom in post and then deliver in 1080 / 4K. If possible, always capture in the highest resolution you can, [at least 4K] because in years to come, you won't regret it as it'll give you a product that can be viewed in detail. In regards to possible concerns with Resolve, and your laptop maybe not being powerful enough, don't stress as Resolve allows one to edit the timeline in Proxies [at a significantly lower resolution] but still render out and deliver in 1080 / 4K. When shooting yourself in the boat, ...YOU... are the point of interest, ensure you lock off focus to show you, also expose for your complexion, don't let it blow out / under expose as it has done in some scenes. If you're shooting yourself in a backlit scenario, as at 4:59 through to 5:31, make up, from a piece of plywood or similar covered with white paper or scrunched up Aluminium foil flattened out, a light bouncing board. In relation to that scene, you would place the board in front of you so it could catch the light coming in over your left shoulder and bounce it back onto your face, thus exposing your face properly and putting a little catch light in your eye. However, there is a caveat, you WOULDN"T do that for 4:46 though to 4:59, because this is a creative choice with a voice over, [and a great one may I add] the same as some of the other internal voice over scenes. When panning, say to show how the boat looks, slow your pans right down. The rule of thumb is, ~7 secs per width of frame. If you struggle to pan slowly, up the frame rate when shooting, this way you can slow everything down in post. You have a really good focus pull early in the vid, well done, be aware, there are a couple of other scenes that would have benefited from that same technique. If it's possible with your rig, don't be scared to use manual focus, there are a couple of scenes where the AF is hunting back and forth, thus losing the shot. All your cuts are "hard", there are some scene changes that would benefit from a "fade" cut, nothing too long, and nothing too fancy. Also, there are a few times when your voice over [VO] comes in a little early, an example of this is at 10:35, it would have been more appropriate to come in at 10:39. Your use of ambient and surrounding sound throughout the video is superb, as is the recording of such. I'm not sure how you you recorded it, but keep using the same method, it works! I know you're saying that..... "you're going for the analogue look"...... as a bit tongue in cheek humour, but don't do that eh, it's an excuse too widely used these days for sloppy cinemaphotography, and you have far too much talent to waste. [As an aside, Resolve could stabilize your shaky shots with ease.] Don't think I'm Diss'ing your work, I'm not. When I first watched your piece, I was taken by the artistic quality. I then watched it again with a more critical eye and I then decided to offer some advice, unsolicited though it may be, because you have a raw natural talent. This piece of work has the hallmark of many many [10's & 10's & 10's of ] hours of love and passion dedicated to its making. Be rest assured in the knowledge that you are you, a true individual, and an artist with a true gift. I suspect this video was made primarily for you, if so, stay true to that technique, it works. For future reference, it's not a requirement to run the motor for an hour after doing something like you did, because once an engine reaches it's operating temperature, it won't go higher, [under normal circumstances] so when it reaches operating temperature on the temp gauge, you can safely turn it off and drain the oil. All the best from Australia. [Where I'm working, it's often touching +48 to +50 degrees C ATM..... the cold sounds wonderful !! ] I'll be keeping an eye out for your next effort. :) Al.

@@alanmelvillesbicycleriding1085 Heyy, thank you for taking the time to write all these great tips, I really appreciate it!😊I actually just came across a second-hand Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4k, and I can't wait to start trying it out. You won't be seeing those shots for a while though, I still have so much footage that I want to put together from last year. Until now, I've just been using my old Nikon D300s both as a video camera and as a photo camera, and it is definitely outdated in many ways. I still love it for photos, but I see that it is definitely not a video camera. It looks kind of good for the grainy indoor shots, but I think the outdoor shots fall a little flat with it, and that's where you can really tell that the quality is low. I think it shoots HD, but not more than that. The lenses I have are only manual focus lenses as well, so I see that some of the shots are completely out of focus, but it's a start. What I do like about it, though, is that I'm already setting up my Nikon for photography anyway, so it's easy to just hit record to get the same shot in video form. I think it's fun to just try it out, and then it will hopefully get better eventually. Thank you so much for the great tips, though, especially about the specific frames. It is very helpful! ​@@veronicaskotnes Regarding your Nikon, you're right, it only shoots HD, the early Nikons weren't strong on the video front. However, for a creative choice like your internal scenes, if used carefully, it can do a great job. Make sure you feed it lots of light, it'll love you for it.... :) BTW, I like Nikon, my birding setup is a late model Nikon with a Nikon tele lens. If you're using manual lenses, either on the D300s or the BMPC 4K, stop down from fully open to help with focus, unless you truly want to isolate an object. [experiment as stopping down too far may introduce different issues] Manual focus is good because as you become more experienced, you'll be planning your shots out and you'll know what you want in and out of focus. AF is good for fast moving subjects, as an example, a bird in flight, a dolphin or seal on the move, however, I'm not sure your cameras will capture them. You'd probably be best using single point focus, and then do your best to keep the subject centralised in the frame. You only really need 3 to 6 seconds of good footage to be useful, particularly if you can change to slo-mo in post without killing the effect. Congrats on the BMPC 4K, I think you'll love it for your style. Make sure you use the highest Bit Rate you can. I still think ND's would be a huge asset for you, but be careful, Resin isn't so good, Optical glass is best. Second-hand is king !. It's a cinema camera as you're no doubt aware, so 24 FPS is the norm. However, for your use case it's a bit limiting because over time you'll likely want to include dynamic shots [water being split by the bow, the waterfalls of Iceland, large beam-side seas, etc, for example] and then slowing those shots down. 24 FPS and low data rates limit this a little, hence my suggestion on the 25 FPS base and high Bitrate settings. Static scenes don't require high FPS or high Bit Rates, thus saving storage space. In regards to your comment on not seeing the BMPC 4K footage for some time because you want to edit your D300s footage, no stress, use the D300s footage to learn and perfect your editing skills. Don't look at it as sub-par footage, it's not, even though it may be dated technology, its what you had at the time and its captured your memories. Polish it with an edit, its possible. Resolve will even Up-Res it from 720P to 1080P if you want. [I have tbh, I'm not entirely convinced by the up-res, but..... ] I fully understand your point regarding having the Nikon as a dual use camera. If you'd like to have a reasonably priced unit that does both well, look at the Panasonic GH6.....welcome to the bottomless money pit of cinemaphotography....... although I think you may well be aware of that as I think I spotted a tele lens in the background in the boat, and of course, you'll know "BOAT" is an acronym for 'Bring On Another Thousand'.......[insert your local currency]....... :) I own both, cameras and a yacht, and therefore use a bicycle to get around. I can't afford tyres for it and the chain is busted, but its great on downhill sections, even though the brakes are worn out and don't work.......... I'd love to do it up, but I need another winch handle and I dropped my memory card over the side........so....... :) Good luck and Fair Winds. Al.

If you shoot half of your footage on a boat, you can buy a $1000 tripod and it’s still going to be shaky. Image stabilisation can only do so much. And at least it looks natural and not like a 3D computer animation so I’d just embrace it and make it my style.
