Hō… mukatte kuru no ka...?
By 6 July 1944, the Japanese had nowhere to retreat. Saito made plans for a final suicidal banzai charge. At dawn of the 7 July, with a group of 12 men carrying a great red flag in the lead, the remaining able-bodied troops - about 4,000 men - charged forward in the final attack. Amazingly, behind them came the wounded, with bandaged heads, crutches, and barely armed. The Japanese surged over the American front lines, engaging both Army and Marine units. The 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 105th Infantry Regiment were almost destroyed, losing well over 650 killed and wounded. However, the fierce resistance of these two battalions, as well as that of Headquarters Company, 105th Infantry, and of supply elements of 3rd Battalion, 10th Marine Artillery Regiment, resulted in over 4,300 Japanese killed and over 400 dead US soldiers with more than 500 more wounded. The attack on 7 July would be the largest Japanese Banzai charge in the Pacific War.

Fun fact : "Battodai" was written during the reign of Emperor Meiji and the "civil war" between the Shogun's and the Emperor's forces. The melody was composed by a French military composer, send to the Emperor by the French to calm the relationship between the two countries. (France had supported the Shogun before and in the first days of the war, but abandoned him and his men when victory seamed unachievable, so the govt of the Emperor who came after had good reason to dislike the French.)

My grandpa in the Philippines fought against the japanese as part of some partisan resistance force. They couldnt all supply themselves with firearms but many of them had sickles and bolos (machetes) from being farmers. The only story that he ever told us as kids was when he and his neighbors attacked a Japanese unit at night. It was pitch black and the closest thing he saw was the Japanese soldier he was attacking and the blood in between them. He heard screaming on both sides. And by the end of it, he was the only one left screaming. By the time they left, he saw himself covered in blood and his bolo missing its blade. He told us this story only once as a horror story when we asked him.

Homeland as in the occupied territories, previously invaded before someone came over to do something about it, which resulted in a one-sided handling of the Empire of Japan (even when they didn't attack in their human waves) that more like resembled the outcomes and the casualties of the battles against the indigenous nations, back in the previous century, which is something that understandably burns.

They managed to not only survive but wage a guerrilla war against allied forces on the island until December of 1945 when he was finally convinced that the war was really over. He and 47 others had survived marched out of the jungle and went home. book is called "Oba: The last samurai" pretty good reading if you are interested in that sort of thing.

In a way if you think about it the Bonzai charges actually did kind of save the Japanese Nation because attacks like this made it the rest of the Allies believe that conventionally taking the mainland would have been just way too bloody, and make no mistake if it was to have happened like that there would still be resistance movements and just general terrorism in Japan to this day against American occupying forces that would be forced to still be there, if they would have conducted the war more conventionally on the whole there's a very good chance the Allies may not have thought that way, and besides in the Battle of Saipan it was literally this or just get slowly grinded Down By The Americans might as well charge

I'd love to hear more. I'm American but I can't help but feel like not enough is known about the Japanese side of things. These days stories from journals and those who lived are more widely available but such information also has a rarity to it. Not just the bad stories of loss and battle but such stories such as getting drunk on duty and narrowly getting caught or even getting caught, the music they played, the songs they Sung, the jokes that were told... People forget the war is over, I feel deeply sorry for the ones who survived on the Japanese side and either resorted to Seppuku or endured harsh treatment. One thing I've realized is, the Emperors Troops all honored Bushido as no enemy boots set foot on Japanese soil (Homeland) It was the government that chose to surrender as it was the best option for the people, the military did it's duty to the fullest. (Not saying the government didn't but it was still those who lived in the Emperors Military who were blamed) May the souls of the fallen rest in peace and may the grip of shame & dishonor be cut away from them! I always tear up when I see or listen to videos like these. White army charges, banzai charges, red army charges, it's like a meat grinder, that chops and minces thousands of brave men at once, burning lives like they were nothing but matchsticks thrown on a pile. The music makes it even worse. I don't know why, but it's always the music, that really drives me over the edge, and wrings out the tears. Let's respect eachother more, and even if we don't manage to eradicate war, which will likely never happen, let us at least make it a gentlemanly affair, as it was in the past.
