I am thinking it is about time I did this to my 16.3 ottb… He came with every issue a horse could (got him for free - and he is a wicked nice horse). He’s gotten way better the last six months but he learned how to fight and win too many times. Thinking this could save me a lot of effort and make him a lot safer.

I understood that laying a horse down was always a last resort. It’s interesting to see it done very early in training.

Thanks for the video. Any certain type of rope you'd use or not use for this?

It's sort of similar to teaching down/stay to a bird dog puppy, although dogs are "put down" more often. It puts them in a submissive position, keeps them there for a bit, then lets them up. They learn that being in a submissive position isn't the end of the world, it's OK. BTW, try keeping a smile on your face when doing this; it really does help, I think.

Wondering if this would be of value for my OTTB? He turns 15 this year and I have had him 11 years. For me, been through a lot of horses, this one is by far the one that has no bottom. He is rideable but flashes like a stallion.

Bret I tried this approach with a fairly tame 3 yr old I’m starting. He turns to run into me, blows up and about gets me tagged all up in a lariat. I also can’t get my rope to stay tight or slid as easy as it looks with you. I’ll keep trying

Wanna attempt this with one of my horses, just curious on your rope. I have a couple of poly ropes with plastic honda on it, I’m just worried about rope burns?

Sir, In watching this video for the 3783rd time I noticed something that I'm very curious about. Does the sideline aid in getting a horse to depart with a rear leg first?

Have you ever ran into a horse that you couldn't lay down? Do you know how to use the Running W technique? If so can you show it on a future video?

Could you ever do this to a nine year old that needs some work? Or is this primarily for colts? Thankyou for these videos. It’s giving me daily encouragement with my horse and just myself as well.

Working on a 3 yr old mare thats pretty defensive and redistant to going down. Seems like she can stand on 3 legs all day. What do you do when they just spread out and just stand there forever?

I have seen people hurt horses legs and shoulders laying them down , nylon ropes will take the hair off one ,to each his own

Had a number problem horses brought to me , going back thru them many were forced overbearing round pen work , the horse can never win, was trying to find a way to survive, and some person finding a new way in themselves for ultimate control, feeling mighty powerful over that horse ,took it all way to far 99 percent of the rest of the horse problem was just plain the trainer also I would highly encourage you to show folks who want to train, show the horses responses , how the horse is trying to figure out what it is the trainer wants Unknowing folks can get in a big wreck quick , seen to much over the years , I worry over the Horse. I wish All safety and well being , always

Knew a man , he would do this perhaps to much ,one day rain swollen fast water creek and the bank caved off, they fell in, he let go swam out, the horse somehow got caught up in his rope, the horse had learned not to fight it , he said he saw the horse float to the top twice neither time swimming, recovered the saddle down stream some days later , freak accident but I never trained again making the horse submit, going against his life preserving instincts, it's just wrong in my book this was a big stout good minded buckskin roped and used a bunch , never went back around that place To each his own
