One of the biggest bay killers is not checking your parts in as soon as they get there and assuming they're all correct.

So absolutely true. Parts checking in our shop is a must. We get a ton of wrong parts or misboxed items. Yet we have a system to minimize the down time due to parts screw ups.

I'm not flat rate but this applies to me too. A piece of equipment doesn't need to be in the shop unless you are ready. great advice for all mechanics.

I have 2 bays here at my gm dealer. I mainly use the one in front of my toolbox for my repairs and my other strictly diag, and quick checkouts. I set my roll cart up as a diagnostic cart so I don't have to leave the car until I'm confident what the issue is and can write up my estimate
@flatratemaster7 жыл бұрын
That is How I generally use my 2 bays as well.

I r and r transmissions me and another tech and i am telling him all the time do the rear real drives first so we can push them off the rack he dont get it. We have seven bays. Great video by the way its all about managing your time. Use to pulling out four to five a day by rotating out bays.

I wish I saw this vid years ago. I had to learn the hard way. I was bay hopping. Then I realize that I don't get paid to wait for UP-SALES/cust Approval and/or waiting on parts. But some situation are different. I have a deadbay due to electrical DIAG and the interior is gudded/stripped. Good vid for the entry level Techs

i was just thinking about this last night when i tore down an 06 titan for a starter which i pushed up behind an rx8 for battery being connected backwards by owner. the titan turned out to be not only starter but flywheel also now i have to push it around because no one has the flywheel. never seen a chunk of flywheel come off and take out starter and a big chunk of bell housing. so now i have 2 dead vehicles tying up my single bay, perfect and i have a water pump on a jetta diesel coming monday. oh it's so fun to have only one bay. great vid, thanks
@flatratemaster7 жыл бұрын
It does suck to only have one bay, we have a jeep getting it rear end rebuild by a local gear shop, and rather than tie up a bay for a week waiting I had the tech pull it in the parking lot to keep him from killing a bay for a week and thus his pay check

Hummer, the biggest mistake GM ever made along with putting Oldsmobile (which was older than GM itself) and Pontiac out of business and bringing Saturn into business! I've observed your topic at the shop I help out at frequently. Someone puts a car up on a lift and goes to lunch or the alignment rack gets used for an oil change while an alignment is waiting to get done; a costlier job being held up for a less costlier job. Great topic FRM!

Pretty much any old or high mileage car with plastic parts, you might as well make sure you ordered them and receives them

H3s: front wheel bearings, upper control arms, spring perch bushings, leaky oil senders, yaw sensors or that box under the pass seat(reduced power)...yep good tickets.

First shop I worked at, we didn't have our own bay and had to wheel our tools around. Had too many technicians, so not everyone was able to have a lift. But I was paid hourly, so it didn't bother me.
@HardKnocksForge7 жыл бұрын
Yep if you don't have the parts, you don't need to have the car in the bay. It's so simple it's genius.
@flatratemaster7 жыл бұрын
Seem simple but still a very hard idea for some to grasp:)
@brucelee644856 жыл бұрын
I don't like the idea of tying up a bay waiting on parts like the next guy so I avoid it at all costs too. However, in a pinch don't forget the large bay outside the bay door if you have no place else! Worked outside on the little projects when the weather is nice more than once! Large truck shop technician here and not too many places I work for are willing to let you have more than one bay.

Imagine doing a bulkhead harness, tearing the car apart.. and having a deadbay for 2 days because ups dropped off to wrong location.
@jocrp66 жыл бұрын
And don't forget! every ticket or RO you get, need to write down the number off the paperwork to keep up with multiple cars, Usually after checking out a car, the key's go back to the office and a check out that pay's .5hrs will get away from you and go to shop if not keeping up with tickets and your hours! pay attention!

If your flat rate you have to hustle. I always had a note book I would write down the ticket number and everything I did it takes 2 seconds to do for every job. Many times a car would leave and a manager would not charge the customer for diag or something so at the end of the week I would look at my hours and if it didn’t add up I had my notes to see what happened. Most every place I worked flat rate would have a problem every week. When many guys become flat rate they don’t want to do the bullshit oil changes and what not. Well if there was nothing going on I would pull in oil changes and bull shit work in the hopes of selling more work plus getting paid for the bull shit work. I’ve definitely had days at the dealer I had 1 hour flagged at lunch time so when I came back from lunch I told myself the only reason your here is to make money so I’d pull in the oil change and rotates and flag 10 hours for the rest of the day hustling out some bullshit work. Many guys would rather sit there and bitch they have no hours and some guys just make it happen. I didn’t want to do the shit work more than anyone else didn’t want to but like I said the only reason I come to work is to make money
@braol7 жыл бұрын
If you work somewhere that wont give you another ticket until the first one gets approved and repaired get the hell out of there. And if you're a half decent tech and only have 1 lift to work out of get out of there
@flatratemaster7 жыл бұрын
Lots of dealer techs only have one bay but can turn stupid amount of hours out of it. but no I would not work for a shop like that either
@gregoryfairchild24605 жыл бұрын
Its more of an issue when your shop tickets are first grab gets the ticket. Coworkers don't like ticket "hogs"

I had a boss one time, he say STOP wasting that brake cleaner boy, you're costing me a fortune! Parts room and oil was always under lock & key. You had to beg to use a scan tool and holy shit at the hell raising about how much the thing cost. Don't even bother asking for an o-ring or wire terminal, just go down to parts store and buy it yourself. You'll be better off and whatever you do, do NOT leave a car on that 'so-called' oil change rack, ever!

Every time I have an open bay I get something checked out and waiting for approval while the other bay has work to do so I am turning while they are selling the next job
@maxwellpeter15987 жыл бұрын
That gives time for parts to show up if the job sells then when I finish the first job in the other bay it's starts all over again
@flatratemaster7 жыл бұрын
I try but it normally doesn't work out that well for me, I get 30 hrs approved all at once:)
