Locked On Baylor

Жыл бұрын

Baylor football (6-4, 4-3) was blown out by Kansas State (7-3, 5-2) at home on Saturday 31-3.
Deuce Vaughn notched 106 rushing yards on 25 carries. He added a team-leading eight receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown. The Deuce was loose, and Baylor could not stop him.
Honing in on the battle of quarterbacks, Merriam-Webster's Dictionary may not have a term to adequately define this one. Will Howard, Kansas State's backup, was 19-27 for 196 yards and three touchdowns. Blake Shapen was 22-38 for 203 yards and two interceptions.
I'll offer a trigger warning before I go any further: the stats do not get any better.
Baylor was 1-3 on scoring in the red zone. Kansas State was 5-5. The Wildcats were 8-13 on third down to the Bears' 4-12. Kansas State led the rushing yards battle 198-104, the first downs battle 30-17, and the time of possession battle 37:37 to 22:23.

The very idea that this is the low point in Baylor history is certifiably insane! The Bears are already bowl eligible this season. That alone proves this year's team is orders of magnitude better than they were in the first decade and a half of the Big 12 era, when they were the doormat of the Big 12 South.

Man, that was bad. Removing Shapen’s carries, we averaged almost 5 yards per carry, so I was hoping, like you said last show, that he wouldn’t attempt more than, say, 14 passes. RUN. THE. BALL!!!!!!

I’m no football genius like the Twitter lady but I’m really starting to worry about Grimes’ play calling. You have suspect WRs, an average Big 12 QB who threw two INTs Saturday, but a top rated veteran O-line and probably the third or fourth best RB in the Big 12. WHY NOT RUN THE BALL?!?!!!?!?!? Try it sometime, Grimes, it might work out!!! I really wish Shapen hadn’t attempted more than a dozen passes th🤦t game. How many INTs would he have thrown if he only attempted 12 passes? Instead he’s airing it out 38 times to WRs who are covered like a wet blanket! 🤦🏻‍♂️
@ltcm5052
@ltcm5052 Жыл бұрын
Vaughn rushed for 4.2 yards per carry. Baylor rushed for 4.5 yards per carry. If Grimes just ran it more from the beginning I think it would’ve been a much different outcome. Is he trying to pad Shapen’s stats or something? The only stat that’s really impressive at this point is INTs. So with that in mind, plus knowing whoever wins time of possession and turnover battle is going to win this game, why the eff didn’t we run it more!?!?!?!???! 38 passes and 20-something runs!!! Wtf!?!?!!

It is the lowest point in Aranda's career at Baylor. Let's face it, Baylor has always been competitive except for the last game of the 2020 season at home against Oklahoma State when we had no coaching staff and a bunch of players out. My great disappointment is that Baylor DID NOT even compete in this game. I was proud that Baylor under Aranda would ALWAYS be competitive. To my great disappointment, I have watch an Aranda team come out completely flat and was not competitive at all. Blake Shapen might not win the starting position next year. Same as Bohanan right? Let's face it the kid coming in looks great and may be way impressive versus Shapen. Shapen has looked tight the whole year. Not playing green for sure. This may be on the offensive coaching staff.

Here's my thing.... We again have a QB that is expected to "manage" the game. This seemed to be true for GB and CB before him - except that CB was known to often rise up to a challenge, take the team on his back and pull a rabbit out of the hat. True, he did flounder from time to time; BUT he would frequently show his alpha male make-up. So, I am thinking that BU needs a QB who will be more than a game "manager" (read: not lose the game). I'm thinking that it is time to let Drones show his stuff. Am I lost in the weeds???

The insane thing is Shapen doesn’t even need to be sharp. Just hand it off all day like Drake and Cam said!!!! I guarantee we wouldn’t have had two INTs if we hadn’t passed it. Also we have one of the top run blockers in the nation in Khalil Keith and a great freshman RB in Reese, along with a veteran O-line who’s supposed to be a top five unit! Run the dang ball!!!!!

@@tonyprice1612 - It was obvious as early as the BYU game that Shapen had regressed since his injury in the Conship game. Not only physically but mentally also since he got his bell rung by the WVU cheap shot. Immediately after that, Drones got a play in where he had to scramble to his left and throw a touch pass while running. Which he did extremely well I might add. Shapen used to run fairly well but takes hard hits when being tackled (or slides short of the sticks on 4th down). Anyways Drones runs much better than Shapen and may throw the ball better also and should have been directing the offense when Shapen obviously couldn't. I understand the politics of pulling Shapen but Aranda owns up to his mistakes EXCEPT FOR NOT PULLING SHAPEN and giving Drones a chance. Watch Drones' hudl film from high school and it's easy to see that he is a great athlete. Runs with speed and with power and has a very good arm even when scrambling. I'd rather hurt Shapen's ego than lose Drones to the transfer portal and I'm afraid that is going to happen. Just like Zeno did. Drones rated higher than Shapen did out of high school to begin with. Perhaps as Aranda gains experience himself he will see the value of putting the potentially better player in the game. MOST head coaches would have already made the change for the possible betterment of the team and the program. If TCU's propensity to injure opposing quarterbacks continues and they cheap shot Shapen out of the game it may bite them in the buttocks. I think Drones' athleticism could be the catalyst needed to beat TCU. The option runs and the RPOs would force TCU into an 8 man front and Drones has had experience last season practicing with our underclassmen receivers. I'm sure Drones could burn TCU over the top if only given the opportunity.
