Baylor vs BYU NCAAF game preview for September 10th, 2022.
Baylor put up 69 points in their opening week win over Albany. BYU was dominant as well against South Florida, prevailing 50-21. This could be the best game of the week as #9 Baylor takes on #21 BYU. Even though Baylor is ranked higher, BYU is a short home favorite. Who will be the winning NCAAF pick?

Two comments regarding BYU's special teams performance against SFU last week and its defense from last year. First, BYU's kickoff coverage was very good in the 1st half. In that half, BYU kicked off six times and held SFU short of the 25 yard-line each time. At half-time, it was decided to allow BYU's second-team players man the kickoff coverage. So, yes, BYU was burned twice on kickoffs in the second half, but most of those on the coverage team will not be covering kickoffs against Baylor. Second, BYU's defense was not very good last year. However, that wasn't true at the beginning of the season. In its first three games, BYU's D-line dominated Arizona, Utah, and ASU. However, those three games (and the one against Utah State) took a toll on BYU's defense. They ended up losing more than half their starters and many of their second-team players to injuries. The line that pushed around Utah's O-line was pushed around by Baylor's. Baylor had a great O-line last year, but it wasn't THAT much better than Utah's. None of this means that BYU will beat the spread on Saturday. It just means that the reasons given for doubting that they will are invalid. Baylor will match up against a much healthier defense than they faced last year. And, unless it gets up by over 30 points, BYU won't be playing its scrubs on kickoff coverage against Baylor. Personally, I believe that Baylor will win the game. But, I'm one of those fans who always believes their team will lose (hoping to be pleasantly surprised).

Don't forgot that Baylor dominated BYU last year. Plus Baylor's online and dline are both top 5 in the country.

yeah that was a poor point. byu was up a bunch and just kept kicking to one of the best returners in the country.

@@brentbrown2722 Yes, Baylor dominated BYU last year. That point was made in the video. My counter point had to do with the health of BYU's defense last year. Baylor's O-line dominated BYU's defensive front last year. That wouldn't have happened at the beginning of the season. Baylor was playing against BYU's third-string D-line. Baylor has a very good O-line this year. PFF ranked them as the #4 line coming into the season, but they also rank BYU's line at #6. Something to think about, BYU believes this year's line is better than last years. Last year, Baylor's line graded out at 85 or better for both pass and run blocking. That's very good! BYU's line was the only line that graded out at better than 90 for both run and pass blocking. I think we can call the O-lines a wash going into the game. What about the D-line? PFF ranked Baylor's at #9 at the beginning of the season. BYU's is unranked. We'll see. All we know is BYU's defensive line will be much better than the one Baylor faced last year.

One thing that analysts fail to mention about BYUs defense last year is that it was decimated by injuries, and that's the primary reason it underperformed during the second half of the year and in the bowl game. BYU was playing mostly 2nd and 3rd stringers towards the end. They're healthy and much deeper this year, so it should be a completely different story.

BYU's defense suffered greatly from injuries last year. They are healthy now. That's a defense that had no trouble with Utah last year.

I know you mentioned Baylor’s dline several times but it seems like you are overlooking BYU’s oline. One of the best in the country

Add incredible running backs and a dozen people that can catch the football along with two of the best gunslingers in college football and BYU has the potential to beat anybody.

BYU will have great difficulty running against the Baylor front seven which all returned except Terrell Bernard. BYU #1 & #2 receivers, if they play, will not be @ 100%. If you bet BYU you will lose this week. Baylor wins easily. Too strong, too fast, just too much for BYU. Note, Baylor's run game was played primarily by a line backer converted running back. It was the offensive line play that opened the running game and the offensive line returns all but one of the same linemen. Boy are you guys gonna be shocked at the stiffness of Baylor's D, just like last year they gave up big plays in the middle of the field but stiffened and did not allow a lot of scoring.

Will they? BYU has one of the best Olines in the country. We have an nfl qb and two great TEs apart from the WRs who may not be 100%. They will put up points. The question is whether the defense can stop the run. They're much healthier than last year so I like our chances.

@@bumpygumpson I agree the contention will definitely be with TE and RB in the receiving. I understand BYU has one of the best O-Lines, only Baylor's offense had a tremendously hard time moving the ball in fall camp due to the extreme nature of the Baylor defense. Don't expect much of a run game out of BYU maybe 130 yard max.
