Today we have an informal, relaxed, and unscripted video for you fine folks. In it we take a look at some of the various bayonets manufactured over the years for the original milled AK47, stamped AKM, and AK74 and AK74M.
We look at examples from Izhevsk in Soviet-Russia, circle11 Radom in Poland, Cugir of Romania, circle10 Arsenal of Bulgaria, and from the former DDR East Germany.
Other nations like China, Egypt, Hungary, and Yugoslavia made their own very similar versions too.
Also as bonuses, we show a couple bayonets for the Vz.58 from Czechoslovakia and for the Valmet RK.62 from Finland.
You can see many of these blades on their respective rifles in their own history & review videos, but we just thought it would be fun to lay them all out together for a little compare & contrast session, cheers.

When I was in the Romanian Army, we had a training module "traiul si lupta in conditii de izolare" - basically survival training. All my comrades in the platoon agreed that if you had your bayonet and foldable entrenching tool on you, you won't even need the rifle to survive. The bayonet was great - use it as a knife, a woodsaw, or as a wire cutter - it will serve you well.

Do you maybe remember how to use them as a fighting knife? I heard they were meant to have edge facing upwards but I don't understand how you would make cuts like that to your opponent

@@dandondera2618 well I bought it mostly as a cheap SHTF fighting knife detached from the rifle. I saw a vid by Cav Trooper 19D called "AKM bayonet not upside down, Why, and the Soviet military doctrine behind it " in which he explains that the Soviet doctrine was to stab upwards but other then that knife fighting techniques for this bayonet are unfindable.

@@jonasdeejee890 what are you looking for? a refined technique of how to use this as a fighting knife? The only one I can think of as far as a military indoctrinated fighting technique is the fairbyrne sykes. I dont think youtube would allow me to go into details as it triggers keywords. Theres a video for ww2 on youtube on how to fight with a club or knife, depicting 2 men that washed onto an island. The muzzle loop can be threaded into a stick for a spear or shoved into the sheath for a crude ice pick type weapon and a true tomahawk for hammer bashing. I think youre looking for a course in prison shank fighting. Like get your buddy to grab them by the legs while you go to town. Its just a bunch of underhand jabbing techniques, like a jab punch. do that about 40 times all over. They call prison gladiator school and theres techniques in there from lifers that shoved deep into the hole that make those ww2 training techniques look like amateur hour.

Nice collection, I sorta fell into collecting them after I scored a real nice VZ24 Mauser style bayonet. After that I had to get one for my Enfield no 4 and I haven’t stopped yet. I just bought a type 3 Yugoslavian AKM with matching numbers for 50 but that’s going to be my everyday utility knife. My favorite is my Swiss made 1950s STG bayonet, and lastly my Korea era made M1 with a solid blade not sharpened or worn down. Good luck with your collection.

The best AKM bayonet ever made was the KCB-77 M7. It was a variant of KCB-77 made in 1977 by Eickhorn-Solingen to fit on AKM rifles. It's tough to find though. Due to longer length its wire cutter can cut barbed wires, it also has a screwdriver block and bottle opener on the sheath. The American M9 bayonet copied almost all of its features from the KCB-77.

Don't get into the habit of considering bayonets to be unsharpened though. My Japanese Type 30 bayonet has a wickedly sharp edge on the top half of the blade and the tip is a needle.

I’ve used one of my AKM style bayonets while camping to attempt to chop/cut wood and such. Not very useful even with the serrated edge on the back. The primary edge is also quite dull. As you suggest, I suspect they are only meant for aggressive thrusts/slashes while attached to a rifle.

2 methods for rust removal: 1. Provided nothing is blued, I like Evaporust for any sort of rust removal. It is not toxic, it's not harsh and ONLY goes after iron oxide. Just drop the rusty parts in and let it sit overnight. Repeat as needed. Evaporust is water soluble, so rinse off with water and then immediately oil all metal surfaces or it will flash rust. 2. If you have any blued metal you want to preserve, please note that Evaporust will REMOVE the bluing because bluing is in fact rust. If you want to preserve some collector's value, then I suggest getting a can of Kroil or another good penetrating oil or you could use Hoppe's No 9, but it's not as ideal. Next, you will want REAL COPPER scrub pads. Chore Boy brand are real copper. The reason you want copper is because copper is softer than steel and won't just scrub away the bluing. Soak the parts in penetrating oil for several hours (or overnight) and then lightly scrub. Wipe away the iron oxide as you go or else the iron oxide will act as an abrasive and scrub away your bluing. The copper will turn the part orange because it is softer than the steel. Just wipe it off with an oiled rag. Method 2 will not strip the rust as thoroughly as Evaporust, but will get rid of what it can while leaving as much original finish as possible behind (unless you went medieval on it). Don't worry about rust spots on it though. Rust does not just spread on its own, so be sure to oil after either method. Remember, it's only active rust you need to worry about.
