See the entire 6-year construction process for the Bayonne Bridge "Raise the Roadway" project with EarthCam's time-lapse movie. From 2013-2019, watch as the deck of the bridge is elevated from 151 feet to 215 feet. The Bayonne Bridge is an arch bridge spanning the Kill Van Kull connecting Bayonne, New Jersey with Staten Island, New York City.

The fact that the arch structure was able to support both the lower and the new upper deck demonstrates the incredible strength of the original design.

NOT a upper and Lower deck. It was the original Roadway and the Raised replacement roadway.

I am in awe of construction workers. The ability to basically build a new bridge over an operational bridge is just fascinating to me.

way cool! When I was 10 years old in 1960 we regularly drove past a billboard on the Belt Parkway for the about to built Verrazano Bridge "to be completed in 1965" - which at the time felt like an eternity away to me. I imagined someone taking a picture of the bridge every day to create a movie like the video I just watched; too bad no one did

I've always thought Bayonne is s stunningly beautiful bridge. Maybe that's not fashionable to say and it doesn't generally get mentioned in lists of "beautiful bridges" but the simple elegance of the design: 2 overlapping curves (the arch and the deck) I just find immensely satisfying.

They way they did this is some seriously impressive engineering. Whatever firm deigned the retrofit is top notch.

I grew up in Bayonne and crossed that bridge many times with my dog Major. Didn't cross it yet since they raised it.

This was genius, at the time the Panama Canal was being expanded to accomodate more traffic and bigger ships, experts said the NY harbor would be obsolete, bigger ships could not pass bc of the Bayonne Bridge, therefore these larger ships would have to turn to Philly, Baltimore or Boston...but NY said no way, aint happening....instead of dismantling it, and buidling a new one based on staggering costs, they came up with a cheap clean beautiful practical functional idea - raise the roadway! It never stopped traffic, it never seize to exist, and it kept being the Bayonne Bridge, the same as always, for a fraction of building a new bridge....NY and NJ basically gave the Panama Canal the middle finger and got the last laugh.

If the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey were to demolish this bridge and replace it with a new one, it would cost them billions of dollars. Had the construction workers ever built the Bayonne Bridge with a higher elevated roadway at approximately 80 meters (260 ft) or higher in the beginning of its proposed stages, there was no need to redesign it in the future.

I'm as jaded as the next person when it comes to government waste. but really!? Back when it was built (1928), they thought it was high enough. I don't think they knew the Panama Canal was going to be widened in 90 years. And the Bridge of the Americas is 61m at high tide. That bridge is the real limiting factor. Why didn't they make THAT bridge taller?

When it was built the bridge was designed to be modified but they assumed extra lanes or double decking would of been done.
