They’ve had dozens of guest actors who showed up in both the main show and this as different characters….it’s quite irritating tbh

Was Carmen Electra in Baywatch first or Baywatch Nights first?
@RetrofanFilms8 жыл бұрын
There's a very familiar saying: "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." The first season of Baywatch Nights was great; it had great characters, great storytelling, and it could have expanded the Baywatch franchise to more than just one successful TV series. But because they chose to make the second season of this show a copy of another popular sci-fi TV show, and not having enough faith in the show to keep it honest for the fans, led to it being cancelled after 2 years.

@@mayena Yep. It was The X-Files.

Sorry, no! That's not what happened. They didn't do the baffling style/genre change in the second season for no reason. The ratings early on in the first season were bad, that's why they brought in more and more elements and characters from regular "Baywatch". The ratings didn't improve and the series was completely dead after one season. It was a massive failure. That's where it would have ended, normally. The first season never had a regular normal first run with a network, it went into syndication right way, just like regular "Baywatch" when it was cancelled by NBC after the first season. Nobody in the big markets on the East and West Coasts was willing to pay anything for the syndication of a second season of "Nights" after the massive flop of the first season, so the producers paid the stations to air it. They only did that because they thought a single-season spinoff flop would be too damaging to the value of the entire "Baywatch" brand. Otherwise they would have never done it. The point of making a TV show is to sell it to a network or in syndication to stations, not to practically bribe a TV stations to show it at all, like an infomercial. For whatever reasons they decided to try to ride the coattails of the "X-Files" on a laughable minibudget that was even smaller than the already very low one for the first season. Probably mostly because that was the most successful and hip TV show at the time and they thought that a part of the general TV audience would watch just about any kind of "aliens, monsters, and mysteries" show then. It didn't work. The idea that anything could have been built on continuing the first season is simply wrong. They gave up on the original concept before the halfway point of the first season and "Baywatch"-ed it up as much as they could, to pull in the audience of the main show - and it didn't work. Again, the show never caught on and was a classic single-season flop, like dozens of other failed shows in TV history, that only got another season to protect the value of the franchise as a whole. There wasn't enough economic potential to have faith in, nobody wanted to distribute the show - and there definitely weren't enough fans to "keep it honest" for. You say: "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." "Baywatch Nights" was broken from day one, that's a simple fact. Starting with the production company being unable to get the rights for the original concept of a "Peter Gunn" remake, making it a "Baywatch"-titled show against Hasselhoff's wishes, abandoning the "buddy cop" dynamic of Mitch and Garner being equal co-leads, remodeling it into the "Other Baywatch" halfway through the first season, etc. It started out broken and crumbled into someting that couldn't be repaired - and that not enough people wanted to begin with. And that's all before one even looks at the absolute chaos and mayhem behind the scenes of the actual physical production of the episodes.

@@henrygvidonas9573Thank you for posting the accurate history. The show was a laughing stock from day one and never had a chance. It’s basically now just a trivia answer to the origin of Angie Harmon.

From the later episodes of season 1 and then onto season 2 I noticed that the show got darker and more serious. They changed the intro and season 2 almost became like a copy of The X-Files.
