There was nothing on the TV worth watching last night. The radio was all crap. So I had this test card and music on from start to finish. Now feel totally relaxed. Thanks.

The trouble with telly these days is that there is so much on all the different channels that really there is nothing really much worth seeing. Same in a way goes for radio as well. Odd is it not?

This makes me smile and feel so happy as it takes me back to when Britain seemed a much happier place, and I repaired TV sets then in those days as most TV sets were wood cased ones, and I use to use the test card and its lovely music to make a TV feel happy again after I saved many TV's lives. That's when TV were TV. Today I've become a KZfaq freak as I watch everything on KZfaq, because there's nothing much on the TV now days.

Modern terrestrial TV is so bad, that even having a daytime or late evening occupied by a test card is better. Saying that, this is a nice piece with the music, quite entertaining. When I get my early 80's crt set up and running again, I'm looking forward to running this on it one evening while reading

The first ever Funtastik compilation! They were GBW music back then, a CD was briefly available through Teleplay Music in 2004. On the notes one of the session musicians, a mate of messers Grossart Burns and Williams got paid for their days work with a fish and chip supper!

Surprising the ambitious and extravagant use of the Yahama CS-80 in these recordings, I thought for a moment I was listening to David Hentschel. The performance controls used such as pitch bending and portamento are all there. The recordings have a lot of reverb therein too characterising the period they were made.
@TheMessProcessor6 жыл бұрын
So the 80 created those lush background strings?
@securityrobot3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, I wouldn’t say that, I think the lush strings are the real deal for most of the tracks, I was trying to highlight those bright lead sounds etc that are so familiar, mind you there are other synths in there too.

As was so often the case the opening tracks were the most interesting. Then the sequence deteriorated in quality and became repetitive. The art of compilation had been lost. There were a few exceptions, namely Positron and Sweet Moods.

Hi BBC2 Test Card very good in the future can we have more of the BBC2 Test Cards with an hour of music in the future
@anorak10310 жыл бұрын
@ceefaxfreak09 Although it was labelled as GBW Music, wasn't it actually supplied to BBC through Fay Gibbs Music Services? (around the era of the Christopher Glassfield Ocean Blue & Studio 88 Bottoms Up tape). I presumed they then made a direct approach for the Funtastik tapes. Just listening to the 2 harp tracks about a quarter of an hour in.. so interesting to note how much melody they have in common.. minor & major key toplines respectively
@johnflannery300910 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are quite right - just making the link that the "sound" started back then. Funtastik only directly started supplying tapes (and then Mini-discs) direct after the close of International Recordings in 1999 (then presentation had to arrange the supply of new compilations).

Although shown with the test card here, this tape was mostly played over Ceefax pages. It was in service for just under a year on BBC2, from November 1987 to November 1988. It did, however, return for a one-off play in the middle of the night in 2004!!

How is it that a picture of a girl and a clown doll set to some 80s jazz is better music than 99% of the pish that dominates our charts today? Really hard to believe that music this good was just "stock music" with no commercial value! It may be "elevator jazz" but is not really a whole lot different from say the album Land of Cockayne by Soft Machine. Insomnia inspired rant over!
