NEWS STORY - INDEPENDENT - 16/08/1994
Edith Gladwin, a pensioner, crashed her new Nissan car into an indoor swimming pool at Seaford, East Sussex in August 1994, after accidentally hitting the accelerator instead of the brake, driving through a fence, across a garden and through a patio door. Ms Gladwin and her passenger were treated for shock.

This was one of the more tamer episodes of 999, I’m sure they would have been fine, the water was that shallow they could stand up in the pool to push the car lol

Definitely one of the least scary episodes of 999. Most episodes featured school activity weeks or sports days gone wrong. This show was the reason that when I was 10 the thought of going abseiling put the fear of God into me!

Seaford is still as sleepy and 25 years behind the rest of the world which is part of the charm. I last went there during the first month of the pandemic and you could hear a pin drop.

Just a thought. If that car that crashed was a modern day Electric Vehicle, those two would have been electrocuted and died because water is a conductor of electricity......

I quote... "No. Not even remotely likely. Regular cars are still full of electronics. They rarely fail due to water, unless you literally flood them. Why would you think EVs would be any different? If we have the ability to protect all the electronics in a regular car, why would we suddenly forget all that on a car where the electronics are even more critical? In fact, EVs can potentially handle floods better than regular cars, as they don’t need air intake in order to run. While most are not, theoretically you could seal up an EV tight enough to drive it fully underwater."
