BBC Call my Bluff 70s with Robert Robinson & team captains Fwank Muir & the incomprehensible Patrick Campbell, plus surprise star guests (edmundz turned up on everything in those days). Wat a bunch of zobos!

Great to see this old footage of Patrick Campbell, very funny and witty man. As a child growing up with a stammer in the 70's I found him completely inspiring and still do. I can't think of anyone else with a significant stammer who ever appeared on prime time TV either before or since. RIP Patrick.

Yes indeed, his story of a mexican standoff with a fellow stutterer is one of the funniest things I've ever read in a long life dedicated to finding stuff to laugh at.

He was an author of several books, both fiction and non-fiction, he had a 25 year partnership with Denis Nordern as writers of comedy, starting in the 1950's, he had his own show on Radio 4. He was also a family man with one single marriage which lasted until his death in 1998 and not a hint of scandal has ever been attached to him. As for "I bet he was a puff", don't mistake a slightly affected foppishness for gayness. Remember, Google is your friend and will stop you looking like an arse.

Paddy used to trot out the same explanation time after time. Something along the lines of its a Herefordshire ironmongers tool, or something equally un- believable. He started as best he could, but as soon as he reached Herefordshire, Frank Muir interrupted............"Next !" It was half an hour of schoolboy fun between old chums. Brilliant.

It's true, there were many Upper-class accents on BBC in the 50's 60's and early 70's and some of the personalities, such as Bamber Gascoigne and John Julius Norwich were very knowledgeable.

Wonderful to see this again after so many years. The original show was so much better than it's modern day reincarnations. Mainly I think because the team captains Frank and Patrick (and later Arthur Marshall) we even then a dying breed of 'gifted amateurs'. That is, people who seemd to regard appearing on television as a sort of amusing diversion from their proper jobs, as opposed to so many of today's celeb wannabies.

The rules are that an obscure word is taken from the dictionary. There are two teams of three people. When a word is introduced, the three members of one team explain the meaning of the word. One person is telling the truth and the other two are lying. The opposing team have to guess which is the correct definition.
