Six-part series following 12 months in the life of Sainsbury's. Last year CEO Mike Coupe announced that Sainsbury's were trying to merge with Asda to compete more aggressively with the discounters Aldi and Lidl. Will the industry regulators give the go ahead for them to become the biggest supermarket in the country? Or will stores need to be sold?
Meanwhile, after a challenging Christmas, Sainsbury's go all out to maximize profits with their flower sales over the Mother's Day weekend. And to mark the company's 150th year of trading, they are creating a very special birthday cake to sell in store cafes across the country. The creator of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding cake has been asked to come up with a bespoke recipe. With obscure ingredients like orange blossom and rose water, can the company deliver such a complex cake on a mass scale and in time for the celebration itself?

I also never knew just how many flowers go out on mother's day in the UK. Its big in the US but nowhere near the the amount of flowers sold. Love how that very pricey arrangement with the plain vase didn't go over at all and she was just clueless as to why.

I could almost guarantee the first cake was deliciously tasting, but all others- factory produced - therafter would have been highly sweetened palm oil with a wet cardboard consistency, drizzled with arificial colourings leaving one bloated after one slice.

Corporate don't give a toss about the opinions of store colleagues (customer assistant, till operators, shelve stockers)! Store operation strategies are implemented based on the influence of market/industry behaviour, matching or staying one step ahead of the competition and being relevant with the time. Corporate only come in to see whether store staff are displaying the tasks which they are responsible for. Store colleagues sitting in meetings with corporate.... That's just a formality and give the false impression of " your views matter" 😷😷😷

The different supermarket customers reflect the socio-economic structure of the UK, with Aldi and Lidl being at the bottom and Waitrose and Marks being the peak.

This is real. I met 2 of the most horrible persons in my life in Lidl. They were at the bottom materially and spiritually.

Merge to drive down price?? Nonsense, it would have been more likely to increase prices due to less competition. Sainsbury, after Waitrose and M&S food, is the most expensive supermarket.

Aye to that even Aldi doesn't seem like a discount store

@@RealShadowfiend180x Aldi seems to depend on customers not doing their arithmetic for price comparison...For instance, in comparison to Tesco, the weight is less, but the price per Kilo is the same, if not more. Also, in Aldi, the quality is lower. Sure, the minced beef is cheaper, but one has to look at the fat content...20% as compared to 5 to 12% in Tesco. Btw, I stopped listening to Which magazine reports when the claimed that Sainsbury was the cheapest supermarket.

I think the more expensive flowers are not selling because that's not what you expect in a supermarket. If you are going to get more expensive flowers than you will go to see a florist. Also as someone who lives on the French Riviera that bouquet does not evoke for me the French Riviera.

The factory produced cakes are a disaster in most supermarkets, even in the cafeteria. They just can't seem to get them right.

“It’s important to stay connected to people on the ground. Know what’s going on in the organization”. Typical ceo. “I’m one of you!. I visit stores. “. Ok. You make $4 million a year. You have no idea what goes on on the floor of the store.

I've always thought Sainsbury's is poor value for money. It's expensive, but not great quality. At least with somewhere like M&S, you're getting good quality.

Well, last night I watched ITVX’s ‘Inside M&S Ep 1’ and the Lakeside store’s manager, “Dior” (actual name) who, though she told us “My standards are pretty high” was NOT an M&S advertisement! Her wardrobe/s consisting of tight-tight, shiny jeans and short tops - both squeezed over a generous (NOT statuesque)… figure; topped off by hair in a terrible state - dry, split ended to the nth degree wrecked havoc by, at least two, Ill-advised tints, the colours of which were unfortunately close kin to her make-up… ouch!
