BBC Look North feature our brand new stroke trial which could play a major role in helping people regain arm and hand strength following a stroke.
The £2m trial, dubbed Triceps, will test whether a device which delivers electrical pulses to the brain via an earpiece helps people regain strength.
Around 110,000 people in the UK suffer with a stroke each year, with over half of survivors left with arm impairments that impact on their recovery and daily activities This can have a "negative impact on their quality of life," Dr Ali Ali told the BBC.
The treatment involves stimulating a key nerve called the vagus nerve, using a wearable device which connects to a wired earpiece.
The trial is being funded by a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and Medical Research Council (MRC) partnership,.
Up to 243 patients from 15 UK stroke centres will be recruited into the trial, which is being run in partnership with The University of Sheffield.
