The highs, lows, and indifferences of the 1990 World Cup, as broadcast on the morning of Boxing Day that year. Des Lynam presents, and, to paraphrase his opening link, it was a tournament that was indeed far higher in drama than it was in quality football. In fact, with the benefit of hindsight, the majority of World Cups since then have had a better standard of football, but I don't think any has quite had that magical passionate atmosphere which only Italy could produce, or as many matches that were still in the balance right up to the very last minute. It wasn't great if judged purely by the football itself; but, if you lived through it, you'll know that Italia '90 was so much more than that.
Without spoiling anything, look out for England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland all being there and achieving various degrees of success; Cameroon and Roger Milla upsetting the apple cart and making the quarter-finals; the first sendings-off in a World Cup Final that was little short of a disgrace; Gazza's tears and Pearce and Waddle's penalty heartbreak; Salvatore "Toto" Schillaci stealing the show for the hosts; Rudi Völler getting sent off apparently for being spat on by Frank Rijkaard; Benjamin Massing's contender for Foul of the Century; and a washed-up Diego Maradona still being good enough to drag a poor side all the way to the final, practically single-handedly (pun partially intended). If you watched the tournament at the time, I guarantee that this will evoke plenty of memories, and some of the music will transport you instantly right back to that long hot summer. So enjoy!
This replaces a previous upload which gained nearly 650,000 views and over 1400 comments, but was blocked after five years online due to a 14-second clip of World in Motion - hence why I've had to blur it out. Boo-hiss to Warner Music Group. I'm also sorry to say there are some audio issues for the first five minutes or so, but they soon sort themselves out.
(Please remember that this is an off-air VHS recording, and this programme has never been available commercially anywhere in the world. Please also note that I don't monetise any of my uploads. Nevertheless, if you are a copyright holder and have an objection, please don't hesitate to contact me.)

In case you're wondering what happened to the previous upload of this, it was blocked (after five years online) due to the 14-second clip of World in Motion - hence the blurring in this version. | *FAQ* | - The bass-driven tune you hear throughout is *Killer* by Adamski. - Stuart Pearce v the Netherlands was disallowed because it was an indirect free-kick. - If you can't work out whether the Schillaci free-kick v Ireland crossed the line or not, have a look at this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7yTZ9eK0a7RqGg.html - [Other dead link removed]

The after the semi-final, it seemed as if no one spoke in London. I swore I'd never let a football match depress me the same way again. I was there in 1996 when they put us out, and when the penalty went in I started singing It's Coming Home, and suddenly everyone was. It was a lousy seat and all England's action, including the penalties of course, was at the other end, but hey, I'd seen an international, which, with hindsight, Holland did us a favour to qualify for. It's just football: sometimes magnificent, like most things, much of the time rubbish, but Bill Shankly was speaking ironically when he said it was more important to Liverpool fans than life and death. (At least, I hope he was.) No one dies.

My baby son died in early 1990 so, when the world cup came around I couldn't make my mind up whether or not I wanted England to do well. Something deep inside me told me that we'd actually win the bloody thing so that everyone would remember 1990 "for all the wrong reasons". That's how shredded my head was, at the time 🤣 Of course, we progressed to the semifinals and, by that time, I was *really* torn lol When we lost the penalty shoot out, the tears flowed - I suspect that I was far from being the only one though. The thing is: I've avoided watching anything to do with Italia 90 ever since. But I've just been speaking to my other son on the phone and found myself reminiscing about football in the 1980s and early 90s. I realised that I've suddenly turned into a caricature of that old codger who I used to talk about when I was younger - the old fella for whom old skool football was always better. So, it's been 30 years. I did a KZfaq search and came up with this video (thanks for uploading it). "30 years, so I shouldn't find it a problem" I thought. As soon as it started and Pavarotti started to sing 'Nessun Dorma' I blubbed like a girl, all over again 😂😂 The one thing that I did pick up on though, in all seriousness, is when Des Lynam said that the quality of the football wasn't up to much. That sent me into a good few minute's thought and, other than Euro 96 and maybe the World Cup which Beckham was sent off in, I truly can't remember a single international tournament which even aspired to reach this level of "poor quality". I'm off to watch Brazil, 1982 now. That *was* a great tournament and Brazil a great team - despite being knocked out. Cheers all 🙂

Back then I was an 11 year old kid and rewatched this so many times, I still have the commentary quips from John Motson and Barry Davies memorised in my head. Still my favourite world cup ever. The drama, England getting to the Semis, the World in Motion song, the Italia 90 merchandise in the shops combined with the beautiful hot Summer in England at the time. I'll never forget the glow of the TV with Italia 90 on along with the beautiful red sunset out of the window. What a time it was.

It was the first time for me. The first time watching magical players of the 90s. The drama was only matched by how tight all the games were. It certainly took on an Italian influence. I'd also say this was probably the last WC England qualified for before Sky took over and threw money at it. It took away the rawness of football over the years.

Maybe the best Italian team ever. That Argentina defense was brutal and ruthless though. It was probably the most solid defense in the World Cup history (Simon, Serrizuela, Monzon, Ruggeri). You must need your eyes examining. That 1990 World Cup was atrocious, one of the worst of all time. I’m open to correction on this but I think it was the lowest scoring of all time, or at least one of them. The 1998 World Cup was brilliant however.

@kevinbadalkar9740 Жыл бұрын
@@drunkensailor112 I'd like to wade into this very cultured discussion thread. Please see the article in the guardian "On second thoughts: Italia 90". Note, I've watched every world cup since USA-94 to Qatar '22. Here's my opinion. There is no doubt that 1990 is the worst WC between 1970 and 1990. However, it is EMPHATICALLY not the worst WC of all time. That "honor" should go to Chile 1962, Japan/Korea 2002, South Africa 2010 and to a lesser extent even Germany 2006. The fact is that there were some pretty good knockout matches and some good 1st round matches too and also the defensive play was quite strong leading to the lower goals per game average. The great matches are England/Belgium, Argentina/Brazil with W.Germany/Holland the best match along with England/Cameroon and England/W. Germany. Spain/Yugoslavia was also quite high quality technically. Cameroon/Romania, Egypt-Holland, Holland-England, Belgium/Spain Belgium-Uruguay, W. Germany and Yugoslavia in the first round were also good matches technically. There was drama, upsets and both semi-finals were arguably the highest-quality semi-finals of any world cup. Also, unlikely plots like Roger Milla being so old but still shining (shades of Messi in 2022). I don't think you can call that the "worst" world cup at all. Yes, nowhere near quality of Mexico 86, Spain 82, W. Germany 1974 but to label it as worst is a bit too harsh. Quality of the best goals although below 86 is still high. I would agree that USA 94 slightly better due to positivity and game-rule changes (both the back-pass ri;e and 3 points for a win in group stage) and France 98 was clearly superior in all respects. All in all, Italia 90 was the best "mixture" world cup of some great matches, good attacking-minded defender like Andy Brehme, Africa breaking the quarter final ceiling with Cameroon, underdog shining like Costa Rica and Cameroon, some great individual performances, great individual performance by Schillachi/Matthaeus, good performances by Eastern European teams reaching the last 8 (Skhuravy and Stojkovic the stars) breakout younger stars like Baggio/Gascoigne, shocks and let-downs like Holland and Sweden. Most dramatic world cup up to Qatar 2022.

OMG, this was the first time I've ever watched football aged 9. I never even watched club football, and got really freaked out when I saw Platt and Linkear playing against each other the season after. There was something really compelling about this whole tournament - looking back the quality was there, but it was moments, rather the actual pace. It was a different style of football. I cried when England went out, and couldn't understand why football is so cruel. I loved the Cameroon dance, Baggio, seeing Romario for the first time, but my greatest memory was the happiness in my dad's eye when Germany won. My mum curious to why the old man was happy that Ze German had won, and him smiling back and pointing at Diego crying his eyes out. If you know, you know! 30 years later, I'm well versed in tears when it comes to football.

@@tensevo nah...I think it is more than just nostalgia. This was a time before sky TV and the commercialisation of football. There were many stars...a lot playing in italy...where the cup took place in front of passionate fans. You had nessun dorma, it was a hot summer, and England went on a good run and the team overshadowed the hooligans for once! It was a great summer...I spent it in farmhouse in Derbyshire with my dad on holiday. I even ended up supporting England ( a first) and I'm Scottish and 18 at the time. It was truly a special time.. Now, football is on our screens all the time, a bit of the romance is lost i think. Not saying it's all been bad. For me i was too young to appreciate Italia 90, but USA94/Euro96/France98 all hold a special place for me for much of the same reasons some of you fondly look back on Italia 90. My Dad harks back to 1970 being the ultimate tournament etc but when I look back at old footage from then it does nothing for me. 2006 was probably the last word cup I really got pumped for and look back fondly with nostalgia. Everything since then not so much, but I’m sure if you speak to the younger generation many of the tournaments since will hold a special place in their hearts.

This was my Grandad's favourite ever football tournament. He was a die hard Birmingham City Fan and supported England (and football) no matter what. He would watch any televised games (also check check ceefax every Saturday evening with a beer) and when he had Sky Sports fitted in his flat he thought he was at the height of luxury and privilege. He visited my family as we lived away from Birmingham for an extended break in Scotland and he was able to watch the WC with his family. He passed away in 2002, Pavarotti sung out at his funeral. I couldn't speak - just leaned up against my bro. Will always think of of when I see footage and hear the music from this tournament. This was fascinating viewing.

It was my first World Cup and I was 10 years old I was living in Burundi watching this. As an Ethiopian I was of course rooting for Cameroon I remember watching the first match where a 9 man team beat Maradonna's Argentina with a goal from an amazing leaping header from Oman Biyik. I cried of course when Cameroon just barely lost to England. Interestingly enough, a year later my dad got posted to Cameroon and we moved there. I was so excited cause it was the land of Roger Milla, Makanaky and all those great Cameroonian players. So many great memories, when life was so much more vivid.

I just played Notti Magiche, Vidor. Thanks for starting the video with Maradona's second, and crucial goal against England, which ensued my counry's exit from the previous World Cup. I don't recognise the game, but I now retract my comment that he should try basketball, in favour of Olympic Diving: 9.8, surely, and clearly an inspiration to the Brazilian Quexalcoatl bloke hanging off the stand! 1994 was an even more bitter experience for England fans, but in a new and more united world, even in absentia, at least we'd still have the best song. @brobbus0 In the UK and Western Europe, 1989 and 1990 were a short lived time that had a crazy optimistic feel in the air. The Berlin Wall came down, Mandela was released. It was before the Gulf War and then the Balkans War, so the world seemed briefly at peace. Also Thatcher stepped down in the UK, which a lot of Britain had been waiting for. In popular culture, the explosion of rave and ecstasy had briefly brought about a big feeling of change for the better. Like the hippy generation of the 60's though, the naive optimism only lasted for a couple of years. The 90's decade that followed was still settled, prosperous and the popular culture was fun. It was simpler and a lot more fun than now. Then came 9/11 and the internet, which changed the world. 1989 and 1990 will always have their own unique place in modern history though.

@@zackolmert9622 of course nobody has the same feeling of nostalgia for 2010, because that's only 10 years back. Wait a few more years, when people who were teenagers or in their 20s in 2010 got older and they will look back like: aaaaah do you remember good old 2010??that was an easier time.... Always happens like that, always will be. And of course it depends where you were living. I'm from Germany, so I would say, from mid 90s to early 2000s we had a rough time, with high unemployed numbers, costs for unification, neo Nazis in Eastern Germany etc., so the "best time" here started at 2006 onward I would say. And let's not forget about the Balkan wars from early 90s on. So yes, there is of course more nostalgia looking back at the 90s than 2010, but that's only because more time has gone by since the 90s. It wasn't an easier or better time, that's just how you feel, when you look back at times you were younger. That's just normal.

In UK we had reports of death threats he'd received from Italian fans, after Argentina eliminated Italy from the World Cup then, when things went wrong at Napoli, we saw him taking pot shots at reporters with an air rifle. Inevitably, a few years later, Gazza came out from his home after failing selection for England, with a football in his hand, challenging them to control a ball a well as he could. It's all theatre, and sells newspapers. (Or, at least, it used to.)
