The BBC is using “covert surveillance methods” to catch suspected licence fee evaders, it has been revealed.
At a cost of millions to the taxpayer, the broadcaster is pursuing fee dodgers with vehicles containing "detection equipment”.
According to a review by the Investigatory Powers Commissioner's Office only a small number of those caught are met with further enforcement action.
TalkTV’s Mike Graham discusses the story with former BBC royal correspondent Michael Cole.

I'd rather they kept they license fee. Hear me out. You don't need one. Just stop watching or recording live TV as it's broadcast and stay away from the BBC iPlayer App. Job done, no license required. There is talk of scrapping the license fee in 2027 and either collecting it via council Tax or a media Tax attached to your broadband supplier. If either of these happen, we all pay regardless. Let those that watch/record live TV and or iPlayer pay the for the, leave those that don't (like myself) alone. Better still no License and no TAX either !

Got 8 screens in my house (not including everyone's phones) and none of them ever play bbc. It is totally irrelevant us all....No tv licence because we don't watch any live tv. BBC has had it's day. Time for them to start subscription only viewing or ads.

Plus they have a very profitable commercial division part of the BBC Group, for instance BBC Studios which makes HUGE profits by selling programs to the BBC. You couldn't make it up, £billions are made and yet they take people to court for not paying the TV poll tax, It's got to stop. Problem is if they do stop it, they will find a way to make us ALL pay, at least as it is now, we have the option to NOT pay.

They say "We're going to do a review of the licence fee" They do they review and the BBC tell them "the current model is the only way" the consultation goes on for 6-7 weeks, then they turn around and say "the current model is the only way" then they kick it back into the long grass for the next culture secretary to do the exact. same. thing. The BBC have been through so many of these consultations they know exactly what to say to dodge the questions and keep the status quo. When the time comes and its head is on the chopping block, the BBC will have an immense amount of power to, of course, report on itself and stick up for itself. Add that most of the current output is created by third parties so the BBC actually produces very little. BBC Studios do some but that is a commercial spin off of the BBC and is making money from selling stuff that we have to pay for. And isn't Britbox now part of BBC Studios?

They forged paperwork to take me to court and prosecute me when I had no TV about 10 years ago. I had signed a declaration stating I had no TV after showing the person who called round inside my home, and then in court they produced an altered copy stating I did and I was stitched up with the best part of £1K fine. If they knock on your door, tell them to leave your property and do not engage with them further.

Precisely! There is no LEGAL equipment they could use to detect what you're watching. If you're watching via a computer, like most people, they CANNOT establish what you're watching from outside. So don't fall for the con trying to scare you into thinking they have some magical James Bond hacking tech. All they can do is watch the lights and shadows changing in your room and see if they match a live channel on a screen in the van - that's it, and that's all they've ever had. That plus the willingness to bluff you into admitting something.

The BBC has been putting more and more content onto computer based access points. Not so long ago the BBC made it so that pensioners had to pay for the licence which is bad enough, but a lot of content is unavailable to them as it is on computer based access points. So, the poor pensioner is having to pay an extortionist price for content they cannot access. This is not fair on the pensioners. When is something going to be done about that?

The licence fee is voluntary. They do not have detector vans, they cannot view inside your home at all unless you watch tv with the tv in a window on open view.

Not paid for one in 15 years. Back when i did i never actually watched any programmes as they were being broadcasted because I had an active life. Rental movies from BlockBuster Video was all I had time for one evening per week. Was never any value for money from my prospective and it never will be.

The TV detector vans actually did work, but not in the way people think. They had a small TV inside, the reason for the arial on the roof. They would drive around, in the winter months, when it got dark early, then look out of the little window in the side of the van, and see if the flickering lights on peoples curtains matched the flicker of their small TV in the van. There were only 3, 4 then 5 channels in the 70's. 80's and 90's, so it took a matter of seconds to check all channels to see if the flicker on the curtains matched any of the channels. It would be impossible to do that these days lol.

The TAX was set up when there was one station, and one radio broadcaster in the UK. It paid for the transmissions, the masts, the equipment and the engineers. It paid the presenters, and the programs it transmitted. No adverts for all this. It was good. It was all we had. A fantastic service. NOW it's not needed, and the TAX pays for jobs for the boys. If it were commercial there would be no jobs for the friends and relations.

I never watched the bbc when i did have a licence. Went years paying just to watch a few programes that were on different channels. Now im legally licence free, not an "evader" , and i still get to watch my couple.of programes. And save money. ❤

Having moved 15 months ago but only just selling my previous house this week, I obviously wasn't paying the TV licence at the old address but I have lost count of the letters I have received from the scumbags at TV licencing with countless threats of investigations and visits but in 15 months no sign of a visit.

Cancelled my licence at the beginning of the month. Not missed the BBC in the slightest. The only people still paying are those that watch the soaps.

Common misconception: the Boston Tea Party wasn’t a protest against a new tax hike on tea. Although taxes stoked colonist anger, the Tea Act itself didn’t raise the price of tea in the colonies by one red cent (or shilling, as it were). The truth is that tea imports to the American Colonies had been taxed by the Crown since the passing of the 1767 Townshend Revenue Act, along with taxes on other commodities like paper, paint, oil and glass. The difference is that all of those other import taxes were lifted in 1770, except for tea, a pointed reminder of the King’s control over his far-off subjects. The popular notion of the Boston Tea Party is that angry colonists “stuck it to King George” by boarding British ships and dumping crate loads of the King’s precious tea into the Boston Harbor. But that story is not true on two accounts. First, the ships that were boarded by the Sons of Liberty, the Beaver, the Dartmouth and the Eleanor, were built and owned by Americans. Two of the ships were primarily whaling vessels. After delivering valuable shipments of sperm whale oil and brain matter to London in 1773, the ships were loaded with tea en route to the American Colonies. Although not British, some of the ship’s American owners were indeed Tory sympathizers. Second, the tea destroyed by the night raiders was not the King’s. It was private property owned by the East India Company and transported on privately contracted shipping vessels. The value of the 340 chests of squandered tea would total nearly $2 million in today’s money.

Governments will never end the TV licence fee for the following simple reason. TV is an extremely powerful propaganda tool and Government wishes to retain that tool and control it via the best way possible, it's finances.

The detector van has never worked as it is impossible. My Dad was an electrician and he was friends with numerous other electricians, some of which were electronics experts. One of them once had some dealings with a so-called BBC detection van and he told us that if you ever stepped inside one all it consisted of was an electric motor rotating an ariel on the outside. Apart from that the interior of the van was empty. Stop paying the licence fee and hit the anti-British BBC where it hurts most - in their pocket.

Ridiculous injustices like the Licence fee always die hard. Its up to us as fair-minded Brits to see this disgusting outdated travesty abolished. How the hell it ever survived the creation of other TV stations I will never understand.

In my sixty plus years on this planet i have NEVER seen a tv detector van on any street in this country. It's time for the licence fee to be scrapped.
