The opening titles to the short-lived replacement for Nationwide, which began on BBC1 on October 24, 1983, presented by Desmond Wilcox. The headlines refer to a massive car bomb that exploded the day before in Beirut, Lebanon at a barracks, killing 299 US and French servicemen. Also, the prosecution outlines its case against serial killer Dennis Nilsen, who murdered 15 young men over five years.

News programme: Reporting bombings in Beirut Also news programme: uses music that would hardly be out of place on an ABBA album

I was 7 when this went out and I still remember the music and graphics; lit it certainly was! Programme was utter shite though. Same as Weekend World that also had a banging theme.

I remember 60 minutes replacing Nationwide as the main news and current affairs programme following the news. I seem to remember it was then replaced with the BBC 6 O Clock News..

Very nice. Always loved the original version of the theme, but of course it was much too jaunty alongside those terrible headlines. It wasn't long at all before they re-recorded it to sound a lot more sombre. I have that second version on VHS but hadn't heard the original for 28 years, so thanks!

I can imagine the convoluted globe/clock/orange segments mash-up being at least part of the inspiration for the intro visuals of The Day Today.

I could have written these words myself. I was six or seven when this went out and have never forgotten the strange logo seemingly made of orange segments.

I remember Sixty Minutes very well but then I was 18 and about to head off to Uni so news was important to me. It was a replacement for the much loved Nationwide that had been cancelled earlier in 1983 but apart from the music was terrible. Presenters were Desmond Wilcox (Esther Rantzen’s husband) who is the news voice here, Nick Ross, Sarah Kennedy and Sally Magnusson (yes Magnus’ daughter). They tried revamping the programme but it was losing viewers hand over fist and was replaced in late 1984 by a Six O Cock news with more gravitas and energy.

It would be terrible if they had strident music over the news these days wouldn't it - imagine a BBC News that has drums while reading the headlines followed 120 bpm dance rhythm

alijanlondon much as I loved this theme, it was terrible then too. It was just a matter of weeks before they toned it down with a less poppy version.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Great music (#) but probably just a bit *too* upbeat for a news programme. Clips elsewhere on KZfaq have a less "poppy" version that suggests they realised this and commissioned a new arrangement with more gravitas. (Spoiler; it's not as good). (#) I don't remember anything about the programme, I just remember liking the music as a seven year old or whatever. Could say much the same about Emmerdale Farm. :-)

Funny but that Spotlight here in Plymouth keep the music going long after 60 mins had been axed. And it fitted better with the blue S titles

Music by George Fenton, this was designed with a number of menus where the presenters had to be quick to speak, those menus were used by Fenton again for his Radio 4 PM Programme in 1993, when three menus were used for The intro, even for the closing.

Nobodycan remember 60 minutes, because it was techinnally poor and had continue argumeents between the two separate unions from News and Current Afairs. On one edition poor Jan Leeming had to read a single news builltin 3 times over because ALL of the film and Video Tape did not work. Not Even Nick Ross and Beverly Anderson could save 60 minutes and was axed after 1 year, replaced by The six O Clock News with Sue Lawley and Nichlos Witchell as lead Newscasters. Happy Days, except for 60 minutes! I wonder what ever happened to Beverly Anderson?

Did the BBC use Tom And Jerry and/or The Pink Panther cartoons to fill the 10 minute gap between the end of 60 Minutes and the first primetime programme which then started at 6:50 the cartoons would have been at 6:40pm

I APPEARED ON THIS PROGRAMME. It was wonderful. How could I forget appearing with the wonderful Sammy Cahn when I won the contest Song For Sammy and he sang my own lyrics to the music of 3 Coins In The Fountain. I won 1st Prize and tickets to see Frank Sinatra at the Albert Hall. I was treated so well at the studios by The legendary Sammy Cahn, along with Sarah Kennedy, Nick Ross and Sally Magnusson. It was a great experience and I'm sad the descriptions of the programme have down graded it so much and it is described as forgotten. The worst thing for me is I cannot put the clip of Sammy Cahn singing my words on KZfaq. Even though I paid the BBC for a video, there is a stop on it and so cannot use it. All the same, the experience will be a happy memory forever.!

Sixty Minutes was an appalling programme. It wasn't wanted by the audience and probably most of the BBC staff - Nationwide was perfect, a great blend. Sixty Minutes had no idea what it was. So come September 1984, BBC chose to do what they do best, just bread and butter basic news at 6.00pm and it worked out to be much cheaper production too.
