back in high school, the bus dropped me off at around the same time (4:45) each day. after school ended, several buses for elementary and middle schools stopped by my house before mine did (b/c they are let out earlier). my dogs learned to wait for my specific bus at its exact time. they would never bother to rise from their bed unless they had “counted” 2 buses, because they knew mine was next. sometimes id have to stay in school for meetings etc and my mom told me if the 3rd bus passed and i didnt get home, they would cry. i still think its so cute

Brandon F I taught my German Shepherd to whisper so she wouldn't wake my wife up when she needed to go outside (I was usually awake). One day I fell asleep too & when my wife woke she let out a startled yelp, I asked what, she pointed & I let out my own startled yelp! She (dog) was so used to whispering and not waking my wife up that instead she put just her head on the bed, right in front of my wife's face & just stared at her so the second my wife woke up she'd be noticed LOL One of my favorite memories of that pup! (She couldn't access my side of the bed)

Humans think of time as purely numerical when if you think about it, all it is is the moon orbiting the earth and the earth orbiting the sun. There could be plenty of other ways to tell the time, it's just that numbers make more sense to the human mind.

Many years ago, my parents had a Border Collie, Duke. Duke could tell time. While my father didn't always feed Duke at exactly the same time every day, at exactly 5:00 PM every day, Duke would start barking for someone to feed him. You could set your watches and clocks by Duke. He would not start barking at 4:59, and he would not wait till 5:01. At exactly 5:00 every afternoon, Duke would start barking for his food. And he was an outside dog. He was outside with Gypsy and Bandit. We never noticed anything outside making noises at five o'clock. We don't know why he started barking at exactly 5:00 every afternoon; but he did. You could set your clock by him.

I work in the canine behavior industry and this is something that I've always wondered about. One of the most prominent and universal ideas I've heard from trainer is that dogs can actually smell the change in air/atmosphere at different times of day. For example, they can smell and feel changes in temperature as the sun rises or sets.

Exactly - who's to say the smell hasn't faded by midday? The t-shirt trick may have thrown the dog in some other way, like making him believe the guy was already home. xoxb2 yes it could be a number of things. But smells don’t disappear just like that, they fade away probably much more like an exponential, ie no matter how much time has passed some smell is always left and but is still decreasing in proportion to how much smell is left and this is theoretically detectable.

After breakfast, they make their ways to the back of the pasture and work their ways back to the barn by the end of the day. At 10:30 almost every morning, they are grazing by the arena. They usually drink at the same times, too. I set my clock every morning to get up but my pet pig religiously wakes up at 4:45 am and expects breakfast. His daily routines are so predictable. I can set my watch by his actions, to the minute. The pig and the dog are able to hold their potty breaks the entire day while I'm at work. I put puppy pads down for both, but they never use them. My birds squawk at the same times three times per day. Like clockwork. Also, I have lots of wildlife here on the farm that show up at the same times everyday. Animals can tell time.

My grandad used to come round every Wednesday evening at around 7pm. Our dog loved him and the amazing thing was she would stand waiting by the front door just before 6 every Wednesday. Suggesting she not only had an idea of the time but also the day of the week! I never understood how she could do that. It seems that would be too long to be basing it on his scent 🤔

What a gorgeous Vizsla! We were owned by a Vizsla for 14 years. She liked to go to bed (yes, she slept on the bed with us) at 9:30 pm. My husband was a night owl, so I usually went to bed first. , And every night at around 9:30 Beka would come to me and bark, whine, nudge and pester until I gave up and went to bed. After the first month of this I always checked the clock when she accosted me, and it was always within 10 minutes on either side of 9:30. She would be confused when we changed the clocks in the spring and fall, but she always got back on track within a day or so. Likewise, the horses at a nearby barn always gathered at the gates of their pastures at 4:30 pm, which is when they were brought in and given dinner. Like Beka, they were confused by the change in fall and spring, but they, too, adjusted within a few days.

Food is a different story... If u will eat for a 2-3 month at 9:00 every morning,after 2-3 month ur stomach will make u feel hungry in about that time every day until u will change the time you used to have breakfast. Stomack has a clock too,for real.But This dog can have a food 24/7...

I have never worn a watch and I am extremely good at guessing the time. I am rarely more than 5-10 minutes out and a lot of the time I guess it correctly to the minute. I do this by judging time intervals (e.g. it feels like about 95 minutes after I got up) not by knowing what time it is. I don't see any reason at all why dogs can't do the same.

There at work, a couple of dogs each day at 5pm, and with a punctual timing they ask (or bark) desperately to be released so they can ran over the store. From Monday thru Friday, as soon as we close the front desk, even if there is sound or people, they go nuts cause they know they are gonna be free to go around. I love them. So much energy and happiness. Despite of all, they run to you to smack your face with their tongues. Its so beautiful. I'm pretty sure they know so much about everything, just because we cant mind what they are thinkin, it doesnt mean they are not thinkin something.

That's something I witnessed when I was a kid. Mom was in sales and had appointments in the pm after 5 o'clock. Not every day and not at the same time every day. Our *cat* would go to the front door and groom itself for a few minutes as if it was waiting for her and then, sure enough, we'd hear Mom unlocking the door and walking in. Cats have excellent hearing and dad and I would often surmise the cat could "hear" her car coming down the street in the evening, but we never actually figured out *how* he knew. :)

My dog Charlie seems to be aware (usually 95% of the time unless he's being lazy or distracted). I have alarms on my phone that go off at different times of the day and on different days of the week. Every day at 6:30 am the first alarm goes off and Charlie wakes up and runs down the hallway, opens my son's door and wakes him to take his medications. He does this again at 7:30pm and will not leave my son until he actually sees my son take the medication. Monday-Friday at 1:45 pm another alarm goes off and Charlie will get excited and run to the door knowing it is time to get in the car and pick up my daughter from school. During this time there are other alarms that go off for different errands I need to run, appointments, etc. and he does nothing. The same alarm tone is used for all the alarms so there is nothing specific about them to alert him to which alarm it is. I no longer get up or need to remind my son at all because the dog makes sure every single day unless we are away from. During these times that we are away, my other son says that Charlie with no alarm with still goes to my son's room any time between 7:15pm - 7:40pm and frantically pace back and forth and also run to the door waiting for him to get back home.

Can dogs sense stuff that humans can't? When I was a little girl, my three cousins whose father had just died in his sleep stayed with us for a couple of days. One of them was sleeping with me in my room on a bunk bed situated against the windows from which you can look out and see whoever's outside door. On the first night, I was awakened by a continuous, muffled-sounding knocks on the door at the same, our dog was barking relentlesstly at the door. I got up and peeped through the window.....and there was no one there 😱 I ran back to bed and hid under my blanket. I was too terrified to even wake my cousin. The dog kept barking and the knocking stopped... The next day, I told everyone what had happened and they thought I was just trying to scare them...

It's the scent, their sense of smell is strong. My parents have had dogs together and they first one would always know when I'm coming down the road, so does the one they have now, he always come running up by the door, waiting for me or he climbs up on the sofa and waits by the windows. The second I'm close to the house, he will begin barking like crazy.
@frankiewinters1255
@frankiewinters1255 7 жыл бұрын
To make this a fair test they need to keep spreading the smell of the owner throughout the house 'resetting the smell' and see if the dog adapts after some time and once again knows when the owner's about to return. Until then I'm not entirely convinced. I think if a cow knows when it's about to rain, a bird knows which way south is ...then it's not even that hard to imagine that a dog can sense what time it is!

My dog gets up at the same time everyday to watch me and my sister leave for school, and then she’s waiting on the windowsill (she jumps up and watches) at the same time everyday for us to come home. She’s got a basic understanding of time. I know she does this because I stayed home sick one day and she had no clue. We’ve got some security cameras downstairs and I get the live feed from my iPad so I was just chillin and watching T.V from my room. That was fun because I didn’t need to go downstairs. I couldn’t change the channel or anything but it was worth it. But I was watching my dog, too, because even though I was sick, I was home alone and if she needed to use the bathroom, I had to walk her... I just noticed how about 15 minutes before my bus came, she jumped up and started watching for it. (She didn’t ask to go on a walk all day, again. She thought she was alone. I was in my room all day.) She started whining when the bus came, and then it left without dropping me off, and she looked confused. So I got up, opened my door, and called her up to my room. I scared her lol.

I doubt the human mind can be the only thing to sense as time progresses. Animals get bored too. They evolved right there with us, so I can only imagine they understand it to some effect, just not as deeply as our understanding of how we define time.

Well, that was the question. The dog did not appear to really know anything about time. It seemed to only know when the scent of their owner had faded away. Do we as humans really know anything about time? We only know about time relevant to a clock or calendar.
