It's amazing that even though the broadcasters of Wales and Northern Ireland had the smallest amount of people living in the catchment areas of where they were broadcasting, the fact is that they were probably on par with the Granada or Tyne Tees areas, if you include the Irish viewers at the time. Most people who lived on the east coast and the south east of Ireland could receive BBC Wales (BBC 1), BBC 2 and HTV Cymru Wales (with S4C later). Many of them were receiving these channels via cable. Anyone who lived in the border counties of Northern Ireland could receive BBC 1 Northern Ireland, BBC 2 and Ulster Television. By the mid to late 1980's, most town's in Ireland were receiving these channels via cable, as well as the British satellite cable channels like Sky Channel (Sky One), Screensport, Lifestyle, The Children's Channel, etc. Even though Ireland only had two national channels at the time, depending on where you lived, Ireland had more channels than Britain did.

@@itsme-sn5gi No they're not. They're part of the United Kingdom. Great Britain is England, Wales and Scotland. To be honest though it's just semantics, I regard Northern Irish people as coming from the same place I do

Why do BBC Wales only play a third of each national anthem at closedown? A bid to get off the air quicker pull the plug and go home?

I can guess this is any time after November 1 1982 when S4C started, as BBC Cymru Wales became BBC Wales, as all the BBC and HTV Welsh Language Programming moved to the new channel

Only part of National Anthem because of Prince Charles Prince of Wales. Queen gets all the Anthem Charles only part of the anthem and of course BBC Wales still broadcasting from Cardiff today.

David Poulton Uh, no. It’s the chorus of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau and the first three lines of GSTQ. Neither of them gets a full rendition.
