The "Micro-Targeting" of ads has actually really helped me out. I youtubed and googled lasers so much, an ad for a laser college associates degree was advertised. I graduate in December. Because too often its not what you know, but who you know. and many just do not even know certain opportunities exist.

Yes, the way that segment was phrased really really wants the watcher to feel violated and attacked. This sort of judgement doesn't belong in reporting.

People who casually speak out against micro-targeting are just lightweight Luddites who want pats on their backs for being wise and against the BIG BAD CORPORATION without really giving a thought on how much benefits people have gotten from these sort of matchmaking algorithm in all fields.

The involvement of Andy Serkis and his company in this is a good sign, at least for the entertainment branch of this tech. they should be beating a path to Serkis's door to consult and work with him. If anyone can spark the public imagination on this, it's him. The man is a unique talent......BTW yes, this is the BBC we like.

The biggest issue I think there is with VR is the isolation. There has to be away to share the experience and enjoy things in a group. Magic Leap AR gets much closer to achieving that except its world is translucent.

There should be a central European Data Hub Platform (maybe managed by a EU Digital Ministry) that would allow every EU citizen to have an "at a glimpse" list of services that have access to the citizen's data, and how it is allowed to be handled. And if they want to revoke the usage of their data, that should be made possible with just the click of a button. For example: "You data is accessed by: Facebook: private only [REVOKE ACCESS] Twitter: public [REVOKE ACCESS] Instagram: advertisers [REVOKE ACCESS] " Every service that wants to handle personal data, must register with this agency. Foundations for this are already laid in GDPR which gives the right for every EU citizen to view as well delete their data any company has on them. Furthermore, data could maybe even be just made available as encrypted keys to companies, with the original only lying on the EU's Ministry servers. For example, instead of giving a company your email address or phone number, they would receive just a key, which they could use to send you messages through EU servers. Once the user revokes access to his data, the key-company association is destroyed and the company won't be able to use the citizen's data in any way again as they never really possessed it. Still, this wouldn't hinder innovation, as data correlation operations can still be run on those keys, instead of the actual data. It just limits the scope and channels to official ones on which companies would be able to collect personal data (instead of shadow profiles, ad cookies and data brokers). Of course, to send out messages over official EU servers, a fee may apply (as with any other commercial mass messaging platform), which should be depended on the size of the company and the volume send, with possibly no fees at all for small startups to foster a good and healthy competition culture to counterbalance internet giants like Microsoft, Facebook, Google & etc.

Shot down with what...? Project loons are about 10 miles high to carry the signals efficiently, a FIM-92 Stinger surface to air missile (which cost about $40000 each) has a range of about 5km... what sort of scavenger can afford a surface to air missile system that can take down something 10 miles in the air only to sell what remains of the wreckage?

So do these applications just automatically build themselves? We get free search engines, maps, AI, etc... Ppl build these apps and they should get paid and have the opportunity to make money for their work. Maybe they should have an option. You don't like these companies to have the data they collect from you using their apps, then pay for it...

Funny that that X place's headquarters is in California. They say that they can know in advance if a project will fail or has a future, then why is your headquarters in a state that can disappear tomorrow, cant you see that one in advance ? lol Btw X, I want one of those replicators star trek has, even if it's only to receive instantly what I buy from amazon lol

Lol @ 11:00 Getting rid of the cables for VR gives you a bit more freedom, but it won't run Skyrim this way will it? I mean, have you seen the size of these video cards that generate those beautiful images? I can't imagine strapping those to my face any time soon. This can only mean that getting rid of cables and expensive pc's lead to very simplistic VR gaming. No thanks.

Mariana Mazzucato's idea is about as terrible as Tim Berners-Lee's idea is great. Does she not see the inherent risks in creating a national personal information database under the purview of the government? A decentralized way to directly control our data is likely the best way to go.
