I have lived bats since I was a kid…a bit unusual for 73 year old woman whose mother, grandmother and friends were terrified of them. I’ve had the opportunity to save a few from humans attempting on doing them harm. I’ve also done my vest to change people’s minds about them. Such extraordinary creatures.

How does one live a bat?

What do you find so appealing about bats? When i see them i find them rather grotesque to look at. Furthermore, they appear in our garden at night and nearly crash into you standing up, before they realise your there and dodge you at the last second. Id be curious to know what you love about them? What do they eat? Flies and fruit? Where do they live? in trees or in houses/dark places? (Id love to know where they live so I can figure out where they may stay during the day nearby).

@@nathanfleming2462 Well there are many species, varying in size from very tiny to quite large. They use echolocation to navigate so it’s unlikely one will ever bump into you. They don’t try to get into your hair, drink your blood. There are 3 species of bats which do drink blood from animals, including humans. They live in Central and South America and can carry rabies. Bats are wonderful for the environment, from eating literally tons of disease causing insects, like mosquitos, a year, to fruit eaters, who spread native native fruit trees and bushes via the seed in their feces. Still others are pollinators, drinking the nectar from flowers, picking up pollen in their fur and pollinating the next flower. They live in trees…you can see them during the day literally hanging out upside down, in abandoned buildings, caves, under bridges…there’s a famous colony in Austin, Texas people visit from all over the world to see the bats fly out to hunt insects at night and return in the morning. As mammals, they can carry various diseases, including rabies. I recommend looking up, Marlin Tuttle, who had studied them for decades. I like The Secret Lives of Bats the World’s Most Misunderstood Mammals. which you can find on Amazon or Thrift Books. He also has a small book on building bat houses. You can buy them on Amazon, at hardware stores, birding stores, etc. We back in a river in Delaware with a marsh so don’t need the houses. Loss of habitat, human fear and cruelty, etc., have made their lives very difficult. I love them for their little faces and fuzzy bodies, their importance to the environment and their amazing ability to use “radar.” You can find out more here www.merlintuttle.org.

Why do they hang upside down?
@sheepiesleep
@sheepiesleep 11 күн бұрын
Not sure if this is 100% of the reason (definitely not an expert!) but bats find it difficult to take off from the ground. They generally have very weak legs, so they belly crawl when on the ground. Hanging upside down allows them to drop, and get good air for lift off that way!
