Thanks to BBC for putting this film together and making it available online for free. This film's a great demonstration of one thing *not* to do as an interviewer / 1:1 communicator in general. Zane doesn't interrupt the entire time, but he does abruptly butt in at several key points without adjusting, apologizing or otherwise delivering value/demonstrating empathy.

As a huge lifetime Prince fan, I can assure you that he never said “I don’t listen to anyone else’s music.” In interviews he always mentioned Joni Mitchell, James Brown and countless others as influences. He may have said I don’t listen to current airplay but not I don’t listen to anyone else

I first heard a Leonard Cohen song in 1967 and instantly became a fan; I always felt like I was privileged to be one of the few who knew who he was, even then. Go figure that people are still discovering him these 40-odd years later. I wonder if anyone will remember Gary Barlow in 20 years; maybe, maybe not. We shall see. . . .

I find it really interesting how someone like Zane Lowe is still working for the BBC. I have never heard anyone say that he is likeable and he always comes across badly. He's a very good example of the BBC keeping someone in a job role because they think the person appeals to a certain demographic, in his defence though, he can talk (constantly).

I don't get much "nuts and bolts" of songwriting from either interview. Taking on-line classes like Berklee's "Modern Musician" are much more helpful, IMHO.

Zane Lowe just called Tool "Pop". Wow, just wow....
@KingDd
@KingDd 8 жыл бұрын
Well I mean the word pop is derived from the word popular and I don't get why people don't understand that. I get that pop is a type of certain music also and music theory can tell you about what makes it a certain type of pop but still in the end pop is just popular
@SeeingColor
@SeeingColor 6 жыл бұрын
All that's true... it's important to understand that, as a type of music, "pop" isn't defined by the attributes most types of music are: tempo|timbre|instruments used|cultural association|swing|precision|syncopation. The genre of pop is outside of time and defined by the following: clear & present harmony, early establishment of a theme that is returned to with variation after brief periods of harmonic tension, easily danceable rhythms & segment(s) that easily gets stuck in your head (earworm).

I'd love to see Noel Gallagher's reaction to this. It'd wind him up so much haha He believes songwriting is not something that can be or should be taught but just something organic that varies completely from person to person and I tend to agree. He'd flip his lid listening to all this pretentious bullshit. Although Bary Garlow is a great genuine talented guy. Big props to him.

I'm liking that Zane Low guy, he's really got a grasp on the business and realm of the songwriter, I like the things he asks about, very in depth, very insightful, but it will probably bore you if you're not heavy into songwriting, probably would sound like gibberish to someone who's not.

Zane Lowe knows a lot about music and has years of experience, so I don't understand the comments here. Would you rather Kim Kardashian did it, or wait, Kylie Jenner? He's asking the right questions and knows how to dig deep. Ronson is great at what he does but he may not be good at dissecting it for people to understand.
@ottodrone6173

What da fuck are you talking about? The host is a narcissist fool, with more ego than brains. The comments here are very understandable coming from observant writers and listeners. Something tells me the men you date are Mr. Wrong every time. Yes, any of the other suggestions you made would have been an improvement.

Nothing about lyric writing in here. I think because a lot of the best lyric writers are 50 year old beardy blokes and they wouldn't suit the Radio 1 demographic. Also, Zane Lowe is a bad interviewer.
