I know it’s fast: I was on stage, in the orchestra. If I’m honest, I was shocked when we first rehearsed, but you know what? - it was electric; it was IN the moment; it was fun. To top it off, she’s an INCREDIBLE singer, and it was a real pleasure to work with Kevin Edusei. I’m incredibly proud of this performance - not just because I think it was “good,” but also because we had a conductor who would ACTUALLY take the risk of a fast tempo; we had a singer who COULD take the risk; we had a collection of fellow musicians to boldly go on that journey with them. Rather than thinking of it as “good, “bad, “right,” “wrong,” how about thinking of it as it is - an approach different to the norm that, regardless as whether one likes it or not, elicits a response.

Agreed. Also, I LOVE it at this tempo-it's a dynamic fresh take on such a classic piece. And let's be honest, music isn't like a museum-it's no one's job to preserve music and keep it immaculate and unevolving. Part of the beauty of live classical music is that it's being interpreted by real people in real-time, and they can bring fresh new ideas to something. Also, that orchestra and Jeanine De Bique sound AMAZING. What a clear delicate sound!

I come back to this performance often because I am completely amazed at both it's precision and energy. As an amateur, I've sung in the chorus of "Messiah" on many occasions and heard a number of variations of this aria. Between soprano Jeanine De Bique and Chineke!, this just worked. I believe that Handel himself would have been immensely pleased!

Jeanine and I went to the same secondary school and she is part of the reason why I am pursuing a career in Classical music! I first heard her in 2005 when my school participated in a choral competition in Austria! She had already graduated but she came back to do a soprano solo. It was so beautiful! Ridiculously too fast! The point of Messiah is to sing the praises of Jesus - not to engage in some vulgar "Trinidad's Got Talent"-style vocal competition! I am not a Christian, fortunately: if I were, this travesty would make me very angry. As it is, I am simply disappointed, though not surprised.
@janetflier61925 жыл бұрын

Wow! That was perhaps the best and most awesome performance of Handel’s Rejoice that I have ever heard. Given that Handel himself is reputed to have said after writing the Hallelujah chorus, “I did think I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God Himself.”, I think he might be proud of this performance because Jeanine and Chineke! really lift the biblical text from the page and make it alive which is what the whole Messiah oratorio was about and supposed to do. Well done to all involved in this masterpiece performance!
