Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has been killed in a helicopter crash, state media has confirmed.
The helicopter reportedly got into difficulties in heavy fog in the north of the country on Sunday before crashing; killing the president, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and several others.
Raisi, a hardline cleric close to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was heading to the city of Tabriz, in the north-west of the country, after returning from a dam opening ceremony.
An election for a new president is now set to take place in the next 50 days.

You know, these days the situation in Iran is not very good, and to be honest, it is very bad. Since Mehsa Amini was killed last year, there has been animosity between the people and the government, as you must know. Now the situation is so bad that even the people of the country are divided into two groups. One of the groups considers everything as compulsory and they say that we have to follow the strict laws of the country. The second group also wants freedom and now these two groups have problems with each other. Iranian people are becoming more and more miserable day by day. My Stepdad fled Iran in 1979 to escape these madmen in power. Wouldn’t be where I am without him. The Iranian People I’ve met throughout much of my life have been absolutely well mannered, giving, and intelligent people.
