Big tech firms have scrambled to add AI-powered services since ChatGPT burst onto the scene.
They use far more power than conventional applications, making going online much more energy-intensive.
Researchers estimate that the AI industry could consume as much energy annually as a country the size of the Netherlands by 2027.

It's quite pedantic how modern journalism tends to repackage old issues as new. Take the segment on AI's carbon footprint, for example. This issue isn't unique to AI but pertains to cloud computing in general, similar to the scrutiny crypto faced during its peak. Perhaps the real conversation should be about computing in a more environmentally conscious way. This video itself, hosted on KZfaq, consumes energy from KZfaq's infrastructure, just as the BBC's hosting contributes to the carbon footprint. But, tossing 'AI' into a title does seem to boost clicks, doesn't it? Also, I'd push back on the comment made by the speaker from Hugging Face about not trusting tech companies building their own power plants: coming from a country grappling with severe energy shortages, I wouldn't be opposed to tech giants investing in energy, considering how much of it they use.

We are so obsessed with technology that we would cover all farmers fields with solar panels so that we can starve while checking the news on our phones. I think the AI is already in charge and its no better than those that came before it. The AI will claim that "They were so bad that the crowd was still booing them when we came on!".

This does sound like an awful future and would makes sense except that if we just covered a landmass the size of New Mexico in the Sahara desert, we could power the entire world three or four times over at our current power usage. Of course there are huge challenges with doing this but it's not something that is unachievable. There are also some long-term ecological possibilities but not even remotely as bad as the crap we're doing now. Even better, a space solar array...some added challenges but again, not impossible

@@Kabab Oh shut up! Solar PV panel arrays are ideally located on rooftops and in neighborhood mini-grids. Vast solar "field arrays" require long-distance transmission lines tied to complex regional utility grids, both of which remain vulnerable to power outage and must "invert" their DC output to high voltage AC and then rectify back to DC to charge EV battery packs. Go hard sell your BS to corporate entities who are in it for the money.

At the initial stage the carbon footprint can be high, but as the technologies develop, AI will use less and less energy. In a few years energy will be a non-issue.

i dont undestand why that is a problem. Big projects require bigresources. maybe govt. can ask them to plant trees etc. else i dont understand the point of the video. for example, your channel also runs on electricity, right ? so should you stop BBC

It's not about energy consumption it's all about the type of energy being consumed and for what !!!! If the energy consumed is largely based on renewable energy they have lesser carbon footprint.... There is a trade off Between technology and sustainability, however big projects as you mentioned requires big resources???? Ask yourself the question at what cost these MNCs are powering themselves, how they are producing the big projects, what type of resources they are using, how much of energy is simply required to just extract rare earths elements from the earth (again this is also limited in amount), how much of waste is generated, how much of energy is emitted in terms of carbon emissions to reduce these wastes.... Ask the proper questions to have your answers.... How many plants need to be planted and nurtured and literally being grown into trees to support one big project....???? Where do you think the trees would be planted if there are lesser available places to plant those trees with all the human encroaching into forest lands????

One factor i was wondering about in this context, google and others have put their datacenters into the ocean to safe up on cost to cool those suckers down. Still heat is produced and given up into the ocean. How much is that, what is its effect on the environment? The last gimp should have noticed by now that we have more heatwaves, so more heat into the ocean when the corals are dying in droves seems not so environmental friendly either.
@mikemhz
@mikemhz 23 күн бұрын
It might affect local water temperature but it have no significant impact on global ocean temperatures. That's because the Sun adds more energy to the Earth in one hour than human civilisation uses in one year. Greenhouse gasses, however, amplify the sun's heat by trapping it at the surface for longer.
@kinngrimm
@kinngrimm 23 күн бұрын
@kq_10 Fair enough, but it could do without the tone. So you are telling me that not even locally there is no way that these contribute to increased temperatures that could lead to corals dying of? If if say locally there would be multiple of these installed and their dimensions would increase due to their success?
