President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has fled Sri Lanka in a military jet, amid mass protests over the island's economic crisis.
The country's air force confirmed the 73-year-old flew to the Maldives with his wife and two security officials.
The president has appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as acting president.
Mr Wickremesinghe declared a state of emergency and told the military to restore order, as protesters stormed his office and demanded that he also resign.
Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis for decades with rampant inflation and food shortages.
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Rajini Vaidyanathan in Colombo and diplomatic correspondent James Landale.

Of course he’s a coward. He’s a politician. What did you expect? Accountability? Staying and facing the consequences of his greed? When all of his MONEY is waiting for him in some offshore accounts some place? He must have had to have some fat stacks to offer his pilots and protection detail, fresh from a safe in the building, with promises of greater payment upon safe arrival to ensure they didn’t just toss him out over the Indian Ocean!

Thank you Sri Lanka, for showing the world how what needs to be done, can be done; without too much violence whatsmore. It is also worth noting that the police and military were not exactly enthusiastic about suppressing the people. One assumes that the military and police had more empathy with the people than with the ruling elite; this is a critical component of any internal domestic regime change. Well done Sri Lanka; now the real work begins ie; putting in place a socio-economic form of governance and productivity that first and foremost works for the people. I wish you well and strongly advise that you closely watch the space called China, where after a mere 100 years, the practice has been almost perfected.

Mr.Gota had promised to step down as the president on 13th of July. But instead of doing that he fled to Malaysia and then to Singapore and appointed a successor!! Situation became even worst!! From what I've seen, this whole chain of events has stayed remarkably peaceful and bloodless (though not completely of course). Even when protesters overran the Presidential palace, they didn't trash the place, instead they made themselves comfortable, swimming in the pool, relaxing on the beds and eating food from the kitchen. And on the other hand, the police and military restrained themselves from opening fire into the crowds, even as they were overrun. Yes there will be a chaotic period ahead, but if you look at protests against authoritarian regimes in other countries, this could have gone far, far worse.
