In the remote northern region of Kashmir, the gorgeous Dal Lake provides livelihood to the growing population surrounding Srinagar city.
A historical landmark and popular tourist destination, the lake is home to ancient houseboats and extensive floating gardens. But massive urbanization, land encroachments, waste problems and a myriad of other environmental issues threaten its sustainability. Although a governmental conservation act has been in place for 22 years, only a holistic approach and the inclusion of the community is believed to save this pristine beauty.

Since I was a boy reading stories about the houseboats of Kashmir that seemed to float in paradise, I have always wanted to see them. It is such a pity that the lake is now suffering because of human activity. I now wonder whether I should ever see it.

Being Kashmiri Myself I must jot down few things for the people ; Kashmir is one the most beautiful places on earth , we’ve four seasons and each one of them is exquisite in its own way , the food here is absolutely amazing from veg to non veg and Kashmiris have their own way of life which is very typical to us Kashmiris. I’ve been to few countries and each one of them was beautiful but Kashmir has charm of its own . You just can’t help it but fall in love 🫀🤍

I stayed in one of these for a couple weeks in the mid 80s. My travel companion was sick with, what we later found out was, typhoid. I passed the days by going to a local shop to buy and trade Agatha Christie books. I remember very fondly the tiny little kingfisher birds that fished off the hanging boat lines and the spicy chai.

These houseboats empty human waste & trash into the Dal lake. Can BBC make a report on how Dal lake is choking with huge amounts of sewage, trash & human waste and managing this while ensuring the livelihood of the boat house owners?

It was mentioned and they are focusing on getting them connected to sewerage or taken off the lake. The whole video was about improving the lake. Did you actually watch and listen to it.

What a beautiful part of the world. There is a frustration though with government bodies putting the onus of its survival squarely on the shoulders of the community. While at the same time, not providing the infrastructure to do so.

That's going to be change very soon. Govt has made tremondous progress on restoration and conservation of cultural heritage of Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A which hindered the direct investment from the Centre and the private players. Even though Kashmir gets the highest and largest aid for social development from the Govt of India, the local politicians looted the state. But now you may heard the Light Show at Dal Lake, Infrastructure projects like Hospitals, Hotels, Railways, Highways, Tunnels, etc, all these factors gradually bring alternate living options for the local Kashmiris, and Thus now the whole responsibility of Dal Lake preservation is not only on the shoulders of the community.
