This reminds me so much of twelve’s declaration. “Immortality isn’t living forever. It doesn’t feel like that. Immortality is everyone else dying”. I can’t imagine what Jack must have feeling hearing his own daughter not want to be around him because she makes him feel old and knowing that he will outlive all of his family.

I've never seen a movie or read a story that affected me and punched me in the gut as hard as Children of the Earth. From beginning to end. I had sleepless nights and couldn't stop thinking about it for a week. Then his daughter is saying that she doesn't want Jack around because he makes them feel old. I kind of wanted him to say "how do you think I feel watching everyone I care about grow old and die???", but it is so much better that he doesn't.
@SpartanSniper3
@SpartanSniper3 4 жыл бұрын
Like, you'd think they'd eventually grow accustomed to the idea, right? He's still a man. He's still family. He can't help what he is and he wants to spend time with them and do good by them. While I can understand it being hard sometimes, it also makes them seem incredibly selfish to ONLY EVER think about their side of things. Me, I'd pity the hell out of someone in Jack's situation. Can you imagine how much he's endured? How many families and children he's buried? Men have killed themselves for less and Jack doesn't even have that option. If he was as close as this to me, I'd always be worried about how he was doing.

@@aquarius4953 it wasn't the show that kept me up, it was the concept and the hard decisions involved. Would you kill 10 to save 100s? If course the parents didn't want to lose their children, but if jack hasn't come through for the win, by sacrificing his own grandchild, then those children would have died anyway, along with their parents and every other child. Sometimes I have a hard time shutting my brain off.

There's a tragic turn-around with Steven, on one hand yes he was sacrificed way before his time with a full life ahead of him. However he and his mother Alice are also unnatural elements within history, their legacy only exists because of Jack's time travel, they were technically never meant to be. Of all the children in the world while Steven was physically the closest, in the grand scheme of things Jack ensured it was someone in his own lineage, a soul that was never meant to be that would die for countless others that were meant to go onward. Does that make what happens any easier, hell no, but it's an interesting and profound concept to analyze.

He’s like the Highlander. An immortal. He’s from “lots of different places,” which explains why in the present, Christopher Lambert uses his usual French accent. And Jack is an alien, so his accent is standard mid Atlantic. Like a cross between standard British and Yankee Doodle. Like many newsmen even today in America. As a Canadian, the accents get pretty boring, but Barrowman pulls it off well.

Timeline wise this was taking place while the tenth doctor was off on his gap year trying to postpone his death, this also happened over the course of 5 days. The doctor probably did learn of this incident later on but because it had already happened he couldn’t interfere because history. Luke and his friends were in secondary school, they were above the age range that the 456 was looking for (mainly primary school children) so none of this would’ve really affected them

No we get some hints in the episode explaining that his daughter's mom and him met decades ago but I remember that we don't hear from his family (except his brother) besides that one episode

After Bad Wolf Rose resurrects him and makes him immortal in The Parting of the Ways, the Doctor abandons him and he uses his vortex manipulator to try to travel back to the 21st century but it malfunctions and strands him in 1869. Presumably somewhere around 1960 he then meets a woman and has a kid.

Be a turn up for the books if John Frobisher was the Doctor all along but only pretending to be this Frobisher character so he could talk to the alien, maybe he didn’t kill himself maybe he just hopped back in the tardis, we never saw a body.......would explain the same face 😉

This was the Torchwood the soured me to the whole branch off of the Doctor Who universe. SPOILER ALERT I know countless children about to be betrayed by the government that is supposed to protect them, but to use your own grandson as a weapon (knowing it would kill him) ruined Jack's character for me.

I like jack because no matter how much he loses, he'll do his best to save as much people as possible. Even if it means everything he loves gets wrenches away from him. It's what makes him.

@dr103 He is a time traveler, who knows other time travelers, and THE Doctor. If you need time and are running out of it, send a letter via the Doc Brown method to one of them in the future (who will have access to a time machine and ask for some help) Even if that doesn't work, one does not use their own family as disposable weapons. I know the writers of Torchwood were trying to make it dramatic and all, but they could have also made it dramatic by having him at least try to save his family (then gets shot dead in the process) and then wakes up afterwards. You still get the government as they bad guys angle they were going for without sacrificing the main character's morals. The writers seemed to have ignored the whole 10th doctors reaction to realizing how easily his companions were willing to kill billions to keep the Daleks from their goal during the Doctor Donna incident. Having Jack sacrifice his own Grandson for the Greater Good? Gwen's comments about the Doctor being ashamed of them in this story arch were probably spot on.

@dr103 Okay...hopefully, I will never be in the position of having to chose between killing one child and letting aliens abduct millions of children that had been betrayed by their government. However, if I was in Jack's position, I would not have let them kill my grandson or any other child. You don't sacrifice kids, even if it is to save more. After keeping them from killing said kid, I would then get on the horn with UNIT and every government agency I knew the number of (this includes every space agency) and start organizing a way to get those millions of kids back. If that didn't work, I would assemble a team and we get a space ship of some sort, by hook or by crook, and find a way to get those kids back. And if that didn't work, I would just go my self and find a way to get those kids back. But, seeing as the BBC didn't have the budget for a longer series, they went with the faster ending to this story arch.
@Moontrap
@Moontrap 4 жыл бұрын
@dr103 Sorry, I will be clearer. No. I would not kill a single kid to save millions. First, a lot of things have gone wrong if such a scenario has come to pass. Second, killing kids is wrong, no matter the numbers. Finally, what about the grieving family that will result with that child's death? Do they not count? Look, we are getting way to serious over a television show that wanted to be the darker and a more depressing version of Doctor Who. I hope I have not offended you, but this is my stance on your question and my opinion of the show.

@@Moontrap Yo, no matter what you do a Try, it's always a lose/lose situation, you wanna risk a thousand of lives for one person or saving thousand by sacrificing one, it's a hard choice but what if there's no other choice and that you cannot choose to save both, this is what super heroes and people like such go through, there's no happy endings and we've must take risks for this, it's not the writers who done this, it is something we all have to face, you can't always do both and expect it to be an outcome you've expect to be, some like what you said would doomed us all, watch the first episode of this show to understand and watch every shows or movies like that, I won't ramble on, just think logically
