Why do animals bother making such long and precarious migratory voyages? Is the lure of an arctic spring feast worth crossing an ocean for?

Why animals migrate - part 1 of a two-part CrowdScience investigation.
Wherever you are in the world, you are probably near an animal that has undertaken a remarkable migratory journey, be that a butterfly, bird or sea turtle. But what CrowdScience listener Moses in Kenya wants to know is, why they bother making such long and precarious voyages - and how they're able to reliably navigate over hundreds and sometimes even thousands of miles. In this first of two episodes, presenter Anand Jagatia travels to the Americas to meet the scientists finding and tracking these animals in order to solve the puzzle of where they go and why.
Deep in the lush and noisy Belizean jungle, Anand joins avian biologist Abidas who is collecting data on the beautiful birds that visit tropical forests to escape harsh winters. Here, using misting nets, Abidas and her team carefully catch birds to measure their health and status before tagging and releasing them so they can continue stocking up on jungle food. Anand finds out why having long term data on migrant birds can help in understanding why some birds, like the wood thrush, have been declining in their native homes further north.
Anand then jumps aboard a turtle boat in Florida where scientists from the Sea Turtle Conservancy have been collecting data on these dinosaur-like creatures. But finding them is harder it might seem. They move fast, so Anand accompanies the research team who are experienced in safely catching them, will he be lucky and find one of these magnificent creatures?
Presented by Anand Jagatia and produced by Melanie Brown

I watched one documentary about birds, produced by BBC (I thinik), in 2000 or 2001, it was so wonderfully shot, it showed the birds visual perception, like how birds can see earth's magnetic field, the various colors, their bifocal ability, winds stars and how can they come back to same place after travelling 1000 of miles, if somebody knows about that documentary please let me know

Thanks I am interested in Bird migration, seems once they take a route no matter what continue using the route even when no longer safe, Newark is full of Glass buildings. Newark is on the Atlantic Flyway. A Freind & I rescue birds that hit the glass skyscrapers in Newark NJ, Most birds that hit the skyscrapers perish on impact, or when fall to cement. TRT made a video 'Window Strikes in the Business District' of us picking up injured Warblers. TRT nurses them back to health. I suspect some birds can 'learn' to know Glass i there , as noticed pigeons & starlings & English Sparrows rarely hit, I have seen fledgling Starlings hit and expire ( 3 babies entire nest on same day) felt bad for parents.

I heard that the house martins in Africa plan their return flights to the UK each summer starting with a general briefing session. All the birds get together and the chief bird reads out the winter temperatures for the Arctic and proclaims that as global warming is so bad they will put off their departure until a week on Friday. How else could they do it? They can't rely on local African "weather" they need real climate data ideally averaged over the entire globe.

Human beings have copied how birds can fly to create airplanes. What makes birds' natural flying ability and human-invented flying machines distinctly different is that birds' natural flying does not cause any pollution or damage to the living conditions or environment on this planet, whereas human-invented flying machines do, which is one of living proofs which show that human knowledge is extremely limited

Birds know food sources are going to be limited under snow or soil due to heavy weather conditions they can't survive from those natural challenges. So life is important to never take any risks about it. Also, did you stay under rain night - day at least 3 days continuously without eatingant drinking anything? Look at the life from bird's eyes. Die on the immigration way is better than waiting for die. This is Life itself.
