Santa Monica Police Officers with Code Enforcement Officers and a SMFD fire Inspector, from the Safety Task Force stop a barbeque at Santa Monica Beach on Sunday, July 3, 2022. The newly formed task force has been instrumental in helping to educate and enforce the City’s safety laws and ensuring safe sidewalk vending practices across the City.
4.55.100 Park and Beach-Fire hazards: The following activities shall be deemed to be fire hazards and are prohibited in all parks and beaches
(a) Making, kindling or using a fire, barbecue or portable stove, or burning charcoal, except upon a masonry or concrete hearth, barbeque grills, or fire circle provided by the City for such purpose. The prohibition contained in this subsection shall not apply to City-produced events that receive a community event permit pursuant to Chapter 4.68 authorizing a fire, barbecue or portable stove or burning charcoal.

Yeah it sucks, but if cops tell you to shut something down, you have to listen, even if it’s a bummer. I would never argue with a cop that much. Make your point calmly, ask what to do & walk away. It is a major bummer though.

Negative… we as citizens have rights on public lands… to just listen to a cop is very submissive to an authority that doesn’t exist unless you give it. Police needs to enforce laws and public policies. People should be aware of what is allowed and not allowed in public places. If it’s not posted then they are not in authority. Imo California sucks for gvt over reach and control. Fees and rules and bullying. They are bbqing lol.. they are not committing a crime. Now if it’s posted then yes don’t argue and pack up.. you should know rules and laws for any place your visiting

Do you need to post that you have to move your car every 72 hours in California on every block, no you don't but the law is valid and enforceable sport. If it's not enforced that's another issue.

That's why you should check ahead& look for signage, or this could happen to you. People go online for everything else, check to see if your destination allows grilling all public places are not the same...& what kind of coal is he burning that last 2 hours, cause Kingsford has gotten so small I can barely cook hot links and hamburgers 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

OK folks for all you people who bbq in uncrowded are here is how a situation like this plays out. These people who obviously don't think the rules apply to them throw their coals in the sand when they are done, I mean they're not going to put them in their cars and there are not places to safely dispose of the coals after all. Then perhaps they cover the coals with sand, or not, and the coals remain dangerously hot for hours. After they leave somebody else decides to walk to the beach in bare feet, a child perhaps who knows, and they step on red hot coals. Trip to the hospital time... There are places in LA where you can have bonfires, bbqs etc on the beach but this isn't one of them.

Notice the grills are facing the backs of vehicles where the gas tanks are. Why couldn't they go to a park or even their property to grill.? Kevin Hart just doesn't get it. Even the vendors on the pier have their cans of propane gas confiscated because they are against the rules and a fire hazard.

People leave behind garbage, burning coals, and half eaten food. It creates a mess, is a fire hazard, and poses a serious health problem. Instead of getting all upset with the cops who have been tasked with enforcing the laws the public has passed, get mad at the slobs who made making those rules necessary.

Please, post BIG signage at entry to parking lot and also include a written list that informs folks when they pay for parking, with the full list of all prohibitions, so folks can turn around BEFORE they make this mistake, then hold any willful violations accountable, but there could be designated areas for picnics and cook outs too, as they have in many parks and beaches, on first come basis.

There are a lot of problems with bbq at the beach if there are no designated areas/pits. The coals are ofter thrown into the sand where they will remain dangerously hot for hours is just one.

Okay this law is dumb people should be allowed to bbq and the state should provide the grilling areas so people don’t dispose improperly of coals etc. this is a waste of time and money
