Essential Amino Acids and BCAAs: The Breakdown
Out of the 22 different aminos, there are nine amino acids that our body cannot manufacture itself and must be consumed through food or supplementation form. These specific nine are known as Essential Amino Acids. Out of these nine come the three most important aminos in your body which are leucine, isoleucine and valine. These are known as Branched Chain Amino Acids or BCAAs. These three play a very critical role when it comes to muscle building and repair.
What makes BCAAs different?
BCAAs, comprising almost a third of the aminos in muscle tissue, are different from all of the other aminos in that fact that they are metabolized in the muscle versus the liver. This allows them to be a quick energy source when the body needs it most as they are used by the muscle cells to produce what is known as ATP. ATP is our body’s primary source of fuel when training.
BCAAs offer a wide variety of benefits such as supporting quicker muscle recovery and repair post-workout, helping to increase energy levels, added muscle building potential, increasing strength and power and even have a preventing muscle loss while dieting.
BCAAs are the drivers to muscle building. All BCAAs, but especially leucine, inform the body to start building muscle. Recent studies have shown that by taking leucine you can activate more protein synthesis; therefore, increasing the body’s ability to product new muscle tissue.
Protein Powders vs BCAAs
At this point you may be questioning yourself about taking a protein powder, a BCAA powder or both. The answer to sustaining real muscle growth, recovery and repair, is taking one another together. You are getting amino acids and BCAAs in your protein powder but due to the way that they the amino acids are formed, they do not work the same way within the body. The amino acids you get in your protein powder are known as “bonded aminos”, meaning they are linked together in a chain. BCAAs on the other hand are “free form aminos”. In simpler terms, do you want your body taking time to break down the chain of aminos to get them into your muscle or do you already want them broken separately to get into the muscle faster and with better absorption, leading to quicker muscle response and growth?
With the combo of both, you are increasing the body’s ability to grow with the BCAA’s, but the body can’t grow without the rest of the aminos on hand. This is where protein powders step in.
Obviously the key to growing more muscle and getting the effects of both the protein powder and the BCAAs is response time. This is why BEST BCAA stands out amongst the competition. BEST BCAAs uses Oligopeptide-Enzymatic Technology. This helps speed up the absorption, digestion rate and bioavailability of these the BCAAs. This technology makes BEST BCAA your best choice for taking pre-, intra- or post-workout, as well as in the morning if you are doing fasted training.
Speaking of protein, is your protein actually really protein?
Amino spiking, or protein spiking, is a technique used by supplement companies to put in less protein than what’s actually listed on the label by adding in separate amino acids or ingredients such as gylcine, taurine, leucine and creatine to boost nitrogen levels. It’s the industry’s dirty little secret! So if you are looking at your protein label and notice these ingredients in the “Other Ingredients Section”…beware.
The only way to verify that what is on the label is actually in the jug is by having a third-party company test it for protein content and see if there are excess amounts of these nitrogen increasing aminos. This is why BPI Sports has created a partnership with ChromaDex. Chromadex, one of the most respected names in sports nutrition, combines proprietary science-based chemistry solutions and the necessary expertise to implement a true quality verification seal program. Every bottle that comes of BPI’s manufacturing line is put through several tests checking for label accuracty, looking for trace amounts of metals and confirming the purity and quality of the ingredients. Now when you grab a bottle of BPI’s Best Protein, look for the Chromadex verification stamp right on the front. Finally a brand and product you know matches what is on the label!

the answer i simple... BCAA and Protein Powder are different tools and for best results you should use them BOTH - bcaa you should use mainly pre and during workout to minimize muscle break down caused by exercices (they are in free from so they dont need to be break down so your body can use them (digest) very quick, for this reason you can use them with your post workout meal also) - protein powder - should be used mainly after workout ... why? because Peptide of Protein Powder contains not only BCAA but the rest of the 9 important essential aminoacids. To sum up: - POWDER - contains all of needed 9 Essential Amino Acids but digest a bit slower because peptides needs to break down to exctract amino acids - BCAA - contains only 3 of 9 Essential Amino Acitds but unlike Proten Powder those 3 aminos are in free from so they can be digested faster

I'm so glad I discovered and started taking BCAA's. I eat a low carb diet in order to lose more weight (I've lost 100 pounds so far) and to stave off pre-diabetes and get off hypertension meds. I have been lifting for a while and I've really started challenging myself. A week ago, I started getting headaches that would not go away unless I ate. I felt like I could inhale a large pizza. Thanks to BCAA's, I no longer feel that way.

SoMaggieS work w/your doc to taper both carbs & insulin so you don’t induce hypoglycemia. Once you’ve broken the metabolic dysfunction, AND assuming your endogenous insulin is sufficient (measured by c-peptide levels), you COULD look in to BCAA’s. But honestly, if you’re Type II, you have other priorities to work on first, that is restoring metabolic health

I always thought taking protein shakes was enough and BCAA was a waste of money. When I started my cut and decided to do fasted cardio I lost a lot of weight and muscle , I started taking BCAA after watching a fitness icon video who took bcaa 3 times a day! So started taking half a scoop pre workout and 1 scoop during workout and notice less fatigue and longer pumps , also my muscles feel more full and solid. Definitely notice the difference in less than 3 months. You may think this guy is trying to sell you, but science backs him up, plus bcaa are cheap its like 25 dlls it last me around 2 months definitely worth it

Here's an article kind of proving BCAA's may be beneficial to muscle protein synthesis, but does not sustain, and lacks limitations as the 3 branch amino acids as transmitters will compete, as it lacks all Essential Amino Acids via resistance post workout.A physiologically-significant increase in the rate of muscleprotein synthesis requires adequate availability of allamino acid precursors. The source of EAAs for muscleprotein synthesis in the post-absorptive state is the freeintracellular pool. Intracellular free EAAs that are avail-able for incorporation into protein are derived frommuscle protein breakdown. Under normal conditionsabout 70% of EAAs released by muscle protein breakdownare reincorporated into muscle protein. The efficiency ofreincorporation of EAAs from protein breakdown backinto muscle protein can only be increased to a limited ex-tent. For this fundamental reason, a dietary supplement ofBCAAs alone cannot support an increased rate of muscleprotein synthesis. The availability of the other EAAs willrapidly become rate limiting for accelerated protein syn-thesis. Consistent with this perspective, the few studies inhuman subjects have reported decreases, rather than in-creases, in muscle protein synthesis after intake ofBCAAs. We conclude that dietary BCAA supplementsalone do not promote muscle anabolism. (PDF) Branched-chain amino acids and muscle protein synthesis in humans: Myth or reality?. FYI; a sufficiently planned diet with plenty of protein will suffice. Just Google or KZfaq on how long whatever protein (chicken, beef, pork) needs to digest its ammino acids into the bloodstream, and then you'll have a time schedule for when to best exercise. I do personally reccomend supplements like BCAA before a workout, and whey protein shakes for after a hard workout. But don't be obsessed with all this concentrate versus isolated whey protein. That isolate is more effective, hence more expensive, is a supplement industry theory and hypothesis that has not been proven nor disproved. So if your general diet is high in protein, you are calorie counting for fat loss, and you are taking BCAA tablets before a workout, and a whey protein shake after a workout. Then you have done all things within reason to prevent catabolism and gain muscle. So just get what is going on sale. Because you can end up spending more on food supplements than you actually spend on food; which is madness personified.

So would it be fair to say BCAA's can act as a fast working muscle recovery/prevention and protien powder is a slower but more complete muscle builder/recovery? I also wonder if taking actual protien power is overkill if I have a failry high protien diet because the remaining amino acids are in the majority of my current diet. In this case the BCAA's make more sense to me.

What I don't get is , if a whey protein has x amount of BCAA on the label does that mean you actually get x amount less protein. For example a tub of protein has 5.5g of Bcaa advertised on the label and 24g of protein per serving, does it actually have 18.5g of protein per serving? I hope someone can clear this up

curious L-Leucine as opposed to Leucine is the L one just a form of Leucine in its branch chain amino acid BCAA form. Always wondered what the L stands for in front of amino acids

sam111880 most aminos have a left and a right side (per say). Usually they say the left one is good, the right side is bad. Therefore they started making sure they told us L-(insert bcaa) to let us know we were getting the right-errr correct- bcaa.

All these supplements that basically do the same thing are just discouraging me to keep working out. It will literally be easier to just, stop working out then figure out what all this different bullshit is and when to take it honestly… for example, I’m about to go lift right now, so do I take protein or amino acids? I just need a little energy boost, but I heard you mine as well take a full protein if you’re going to just take BCAAS… So this confusion is making me frustrated…
