OMG i love that fire rope/silica wick trick..! Best ultralight trick i have seen in a while. It seems like a great idea for making a DIY alcohol stove for the tiny "Bushbox EDC" (worlds smallest woodstove) from Bushcraft Essentials.

If you make a 55mm hole in the bottom of the mk1 stove it will sit on top of a Trangia at around the optimum height for cooking. You then have the choice of using a Cherry Blossom tin with fire rope or a Trangia. I find that a Trangia overheats in the mk2 stove. The only benefit I can see with the mk2 is that it is lighter, other than that it I don't see it as an improvement. All the best.

I modded one of my MK 1 base's by cutting out a hole for the Trangier so it drops in and fits snug on it's rim. This puts it 30mm from the cup. Doing this also requires 4 legs which I drilled out and put in Riv Nuts so they are splayed out at a slight angle giving a very sturdy base and used 60mm bolts for legs. This makes the original Crusader complete with the Trangier burner. By covering the new hole with a metal insert it can now be used as a mini fire pit and also with a cut out mesh on the cup holder be used as a mini BBQ. This system is the absolute nuts and has become my favorite non lightweight camp cook kit.

Hi Paul mate. I have the Crusader Mk1 cook set which I think is a fantastic bit of kit. Timeless, It'll probably out live me. Unbreakably I think lol. What I do with mine is use the Trangia gel burner which I got from Go outdoors for £7.65 and the Bio-Ethanol gel fuel which they also sell in 1ltr and 200ml sachets. The 200ml sachets are ideal for packing in your kit bag as nice and small. I know you use the fire rope in your Mk1 but just thought I'd give you an alternative idea to try. I'm also a big fan of the Trangia alcohol burner but as you know it doesn't fit the Mk1 but the Trangia gel burner does a treat. Mine actually stays in the Mk1 all the time with its lid on as the Crusader cup and Osprey canteen still fit on top like a glove when packed away. Give it a go if you haven't all ready.

Thanks for your comment, I have tried it and it does work well. I think the MK1 was made for Hexamine blocks originally, but people don't like them as much as the gels these days :)

You can put the cross bar down with the trangia inserted if you take of the snuff cap and screw down lid but then when you out a pan on it’s to to close to the flame and extinguishes it ,that can be solved with two metal tent pegs across the bars.

Paul, I bought one on ebay from the UK and it took almost a month to get to fl here in the states. I used it all the time to make hot tea. I used the USGI stainless cup which works quite well. Tell Peter to get out and help you make some cooking videos. We miss him.

Interesting vid and appreciate the 4k mate. I use the C1 cup with the C2 base and trangia too. I made a grill from a disposable BBQ just to raise it up a little, which sits on top of the C2 base and still fits in the C2 bag along with a lid I made, as I was getting a film on the water without it. My C2 aluminium cup has gone a bit scuzzy. The C2 base, trangia, lid, grill, C2 Bottle, and C1 steel cup just fit in the C2 bag. I been doing some walks and wild camping recently so upgraded to titanium MSR kettle to cut weight, which I love.

@@PaulBissekerBushcraft Have this same setup. Burner was too close to the cup and prevented sufficient airflow. Solution is a alcohol burner stand, try amazon, that is 2 piece and creates a cross when interlocked that sits on the burner and then the cup sits on that. The stand is the correct height for airflow, and you can get them in titanium. Job done.

A great comparison Paul...I have done a similar comparison and use either a penny stove or stove/fire rope with meths like you do in my MK1 cooker with the MK1 stainless crusader cup. I have sold my MK2 Crusader cooker and cup because when I tested it, it wasn't as efficient with either my penny stove or stove rope but was like you say able to be used with wood as fuel. I wasn't a fan of the new MK2 cup as it is anodised aluminium and I avoid drinking or eating out of anything made out of aluminium. So my conclusions were slightly different to yours with the MK1 cooker and cup my preference but it is horses for courses like you say :)

If you already have a bottle to carry your fuel in, you don't really need a Trangia? The Trangia, is only extra weight which you will carry. Does the rope have any effect on burn time compared to with a rope and without rope?

Another very good video, Paul. I’d like to ask how you think the Mk II compares with the Trangia Triangle ? I already have the Triangle, but it doesn’t get as much use as it could because of the ferocious flame pattern and the very limited use of the simmer ring. I use it mainly for boiling water for drinks, or soup with the Trangia kettle, or MSR Titan.. By the time I’ve assembled it I might as well have retrieved the Trangia 27. As the BCB is ready assembled, I’m thinking it might be preferable for making a quick brew. Can it be controlled with the simmer cap ?
@PaulBissekerBushcraft
@PaulBissekerBushcraft 6 жыл бұрын
I think the Trangia Triangle might win by how compact you can get it. The MK2 base has similar problems with the simmer ring as the triangle. The BCB will be quicker but will take up more room in your pack.

What brand is the bottle that you store your alcohol in?
@oldigger7060
@oldigger7060 2 жыл бұрын
Good video. You may be able to answer a question that's been tormenting me. Does the Mark 1 cup have the same dimensions as the plastic mug (which I assume is the same size in both versions)? Is so, then a Mark 1 mug could sit on the top of the water bottle and give the user 2 cooking vessels instead of merely one. This could be handy in the field. You could cook up a storm in the bigger Mark 2 cup and then do a brew in the Mark 1 mug without first having to clean out the former (useful if water is in short supply).
@PaulBissekerBushcraft

Was not a great fan of the Mk1, cup and base. If you're carrying it the weight/size Vs usefulness wasn't too great. The MK2 cup was much better, lighter and bigger. Used the base for a while, it is very good with a Trangia but there are less bulky options out there. It's horses for courses though, they're both good bits of kit and what's good for one person's requirements is not so great for another's.
