another great video Drew, TY. the chimney / foundry, is derelict. its the old boiler house within the Avery weighing scales factory, an old building that was closed and sealed off when i worked there in 1993. all the factory units around it are the old foundry's within the grounds of Avery's. i worked with the maintenance team and went inside most the old buildings, exploring. amazing they are still there. some date back to late 1700's

Thanks for sharing that some very interesting buildings I bet it's interesting still inside those buildings crazy to still see they have left most of the land never know might be used in future as a extension for Avery's

I used to produce negatives for Avery's back in the late 80's when I worked at a printers in Smethwick. A chap called Alan Ballyliss used to call in and we produced a copy of the scales for them to I assume screen print the scales?

That stretch of canal was my lockdown exercise on my bike so I know it well. Along the old Harborne railway line and down onto the canal and away to Smethwick. Had a few great rides exploring the history so it was nice to see it again. Nice to see you learning as you rode along of the history of that stretch, as I did on my rides.

@@MidlandsOutdoors when you get to the site of the old Harborne railway bridge you can see the old tunnel up the banking. Plus on the next canal junction there is one of the bridges that is different as it got demolished by a train derailment in the 50s. I used to work just over the back of there for 30yrs plus.

I find this most depressing, overgrown and spoiled by graffiti, I don't think that brick built stack is anything to do with an iron foundry. I say that because iron foundries tended to use cupola furnaces which where made from steel plate. Some of the big foundry companies based in Smethwick were Repton Foundry, Dartmouth Auto castings, The Midland Motor Cylinder Co, Birmingham Aluminium Castings. These foundries, apart from Repton ,were part of The huge Birmid Industries Group which was later known as Birmid-Qualcast. The group made thousands of castings for the motor industry.
