Orchestra conducted by Bernard Herrman. F...g hell, imagine having one of the greatest film composers ever conduct your orch for a variety programme.

That Bernard Herrmann died five years before the programme aired, if it wasn't a repeat.

I can't help feeling that 'The Towering Inferno' was a bad choice for a Christmas film. Lots of people being burned to death or falling to their doom, isn't really the short of jolly family fun you want at that time of year.

I think the rule at that time was a five year gap between cinema release & tv showing. Itv & BBC used to grab the ‘best’ available and paid so much for them that they had to broadcast at peak periods.

I was ten and a half when John Lennon was shot, so in my last year at junior school. I have now lived eleven years longer than him!

Yes same here. It was one of those iconic events that you remembered where you were at the time.
