Holy crap. I have had my puppy for 5 months and walks are torture because of the pulling. I was about to get a prong collar it’s in my Amazon cart. I just spent the last 14 minutes with her doing this technique and I was so amazed that it actually works, and I could do it!! She’s certainly not perfect and we aren’t easy for a regular walk yet but if I have to stay on my deck and driveway for the next few weeks until she’s got it so be it!! Thank you!
@jjackson88813 жыл бұрын
I also have been using your technique for the barking from the windows when any little thing goes by. We tel her thank you and tell her it’s ok and redirect her to something else.. we’ve been doing it for a few weeks now and we are at the point that if she sees something she has this little half bark she does and we immediately tell her thank you, and she’s a good girl and she stops. It’s unbelievable!

Stumbled on this video by accident. This makes SO much sense. I always struggled with why the “positive” trainers I’ve viewed in the past you could make NO “corrections”. I’m not even that way with my child. I’m heading out to the driveway now to give this a shot.
@weltfrieden_in_pink2 жыл бұрын
I just started to do some research about force-free training and I've never heard that there is no correction ;-) The core seems to be that you manage situations as long as you train the dog so no correction is needed as there are (almost) no situations to correct. Now I understand that's not possible every single day and hour, but I try my best and so far it works fine here.
@Spr1ggan872 жыл бұрын
@@weltfrieden_in_pink Depends on the dog, breed, etc. "Force free" is all about spamming the dog with treats but what's that going accomplish when an off leash dog charges your GSD or Malinois, or a deer jumps out in front of your Husky? Nothing.
@pattychan818 Жыл бұрын
@@Spr1ggan87 That's so true! I was only a block away from my house. Twiced, I had a off leash dog and dogs ran toward us and my dog went nuts, barking, lunging and pulling. I think I was trying to hold her back when I saw the dogs coming and the leash tension did not help. I got jelly legs by the time I made it back home.

Literally a miracle worker here. We implemented this for the first time ever tonight and it worked so well. We made it around the block with NO reactivity to dogs, joggers, or bikers. Might have taken us and hour but the no reactivity is such a success It could have taken 2 hours and I wouldn’t care!!

This made a huge difference with my epically reactive 2 year old Cattle Dog is got from a shelter a few months ago. I had to figure out that he was walking with a loose leash, but completely ignoring me though. Now I check on him frequently to reinforce that he needs to pay attention to me. Life is getting easier and the neighbors are impressed enough to compliment. Thanks

I'm currently in school to become a professional dog trainer and I've got to admit this is the first time seeing this method. I've been using the training method from my school with horrible results, especially when another dog approaches us on a walk....I end up looking like a fool while my dog is acting ridiculous. One of your video's populated as a suggestion so I watched a few. I got up this morning with great anticipation to apply this method. WOW...again I say WOW. On our walk we did encounter another dog and WOW....finally a pleasant walk! I recommended you the the gentleman we encountered because he has the same issue with his Pitbull.
@lisac.30842 жыл бұрын
I've been using a gentle leader for several months and my Goldendoodle would still pull. I would stop and slowly pull back on the gentle leader, which was not effective. It was so helpful to watch you work with this dog and with a client on another video. I tried the "pop" instead of the "pull" and what a difference! My dog walks right by my side now. No more pulling. Thanks for sharing!

thank you. I agree with your training method and principal. It's rare to see someone with so much sense and balance. Normally with dog training, it's either end of the sprectrum, shock collar, "dominance" and what have you, and at the other end is where you can't even say "ah ah" or "no" when the dog does something wrong, both are too extreme, your method has worked best with my puppy.

This is gold... My 5 months old Beagle walks so very nicely on a leash after those doorway drills, and the sudden stops & asking a sit and stay. Most people's Beagles are crazy pullers, dragging the owners everywhere, and many get lost because they run off if ever an owner drops the leash (or lets them off in public). Mine has quickly learned to sit down when I stop, and look up to me. He knows that the walk won't continue unless he does that. Today, he saw an elderly gentleman whom, for whatever reason, my puppy found scary, so he growled and raised his hackles whilst we approached. One sudden stop & leash pop as he hit the end of the leash, and he snapped right out of it, walking nicely on a lose leash, and wagging his tail at the person, but kept on walking. Thanks Joel!!!

Thank you. Excellent video. Great audio. Every time I watch a video, I get one more clue and get the technique more drilled in. I can see that really isn’t much pull on the leash, but less leeway. I definitely feel like I am training myself more than the dog.

Hey just stumbled onto your channel today. I love the way you teach us and train dogs. What always confused me was the way that many positive reinforcement trainers on KZfaq will always go to treats as the answer for everything. They couldn’t show and never showed “punishment” as it is seen as cruel. Thank you for explaining in a clear and concise way with no nonsense involved. Will try this with my 10 week old Belgian Shepard. I don’t want my dog to completely rely on treats so thanks for pointing this out.

IT WORKS!!! I just spent 10 minutes outdoors with my puppy and was able to get her to stop pulling and instead following me! I then spent another 5 minutes inside the house using the same technique. IT WAS A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE! I feel sooo much better, knowing I am getting her to respond. I HAD been working with my 5 month old puppy for at least two months to stop leash pulling. When I first got my puppy, I watched A LOT of obedience training videos, but nothing seemed to help. That's until I found out what type of breed puppy I had rescued from the shelter....a belgian malinois. The positive/treat based training wasn't working for her (or me), until I started researching training specific to high-drive dogs. I'M A HAPPY GAL OF A MAL!!

I was able to walk my Goldi - super hyper crazy reactive to other dogs - without any bark nor leash pulling next to other crazy barking dogs behind the fance. With your method I was able to do in three days what I was begging for 3 years. We still have problems with other dogs, which are not behind their fences, but now I know it needs some practice for few days. Subscribed and already watched all of your movies. This is unbelievable. My dog could heel w treats with no distractions but whenever there was another person he would pull me to go say hi and I was a walking petting zoo. Now that I did the corrections (only mild ones were needed as he knows leash pressure and he is 6 months so I am gentle) and the stops I could walk like a normal person past other people!!! Honestly I feel like im 90 percent there after one day of trying this.

This is my first time watching your videos and I'm excited to try out. My dalmatian is extremely food motivated, so it's super easy to train her with new things, but i know her obedience revolves around the food. She will walk next to me and never leave if I have treats, but she thinks the motion I want from her is for her to be looking at me constantly, and she angles her body in front of me so I can never take a left turn! She's focused on the reward, not on me. I'm going to give this a go!
