You need to activate the cortex to see your patterns and then choose a different response from the pattern so you can start to break it down.
Reach out if you need support to heal.

Perfect advice for me right now. I am doing this active mind work atm and it's working a treat. I feel silly sometimes talking to myself but it's working and the pain is turning into a sensation now. Its not painful anymore just light tension so I know it's changing and sometimes not even there. 🥰

Such an empowering, compassionate and helpful video Jim. It’s so good to hear about and be reminded of how and what keeps our symptoms in the driving seat. Listening to your words reminds me that I have to practice more often enabling the right parts of my brain to get in the driving seat and steer my healing in a proactive way. Today has been a tough day where I felt worn down by my symptoms and anxiety. .... you’ve given me the energy and reminders I need to take back control and stop the hijacking. Blessings. Clare

I'm fairly new to mind/body symptoms. I have been challenging my pain and other symptoms more aggressively in the last couple of weeks. So this video was very helpful. It really resonated with me hearing you talking about not listening to my fears about my pain, by staying in my cortex. I'm seeing how much and how often I allow my amygdala to hijack me and control my behavior. Thanks for all your videos, I've watched many, they have been very helpful!

I had a breakthrough in the last 24 hours. Last night I realised how much I downplay my feelings and emotions. It’s a trauma response that I’ve carried since childhood and repeating patterns that were ingrained into me by parents who ignored my needs and blamed me for their own shortcomings. Even though I healed a lot of those traumatic times and events I still carry those old thinking patterns. Downplaying my own emotions and symptoms is keeping me stuck. I’ve been doing mind body work for several years and made progress on my mental health but not on my physiological health. Your video this morning reinforced the realisation I had last night about me downplaying my feelings and symptoms and not listening to how I feel and addressing it. The emotional pain outweighs the physical pain a million times and that’s not an exaggeration. I feel optimistic that changing this pattern of not accepting my emotional trauma and physical symptoms is going to lead to improvements in my health.
@thepainpt
@thepainpt 2 жыл бұрын

Yes you have to get tough with a strong habitual brain that is programmed for symptoms. Saying no strongly and holding that line is important in your mind. You are teaching your reptilian brain or dog brain. So you need to be firm, consistent and in control just like teaching a dog a new habit

But I thought the pain or anxiety symptoms were body's way to communicate, meaning your subconscious is trying to tell you something. So shouldn't we be kind and compassionate, and instead of "not listening" to the anxiety or pain, shouldn't we be actually listening the part of ourselves? We don't have to react, but wouldn't it be better to respond by saying something like "I hear you, you are scared. Let me look around and assure you, you are okay"? I was never comforted growing up, and being ridiculed or laughed at for being afraid and scared. That meant I was ignored, and was not heard. So when you say "Don't listen," I end up taking it as "ignore the anxiety or pain."
@thepainpt
@thepainpt Жыл бұрын
Yeah, what you said is exactly true and correct. It’s just that for some people. Anxiety scares them so much that they think it’s dangerous when in fact, it’s just a perceived danger.

At 3:30 you suggest what you can do with a pain flare as opposed to just sitting and taking it: 1) No, pain you are not controlling me today, 2) Pain take it easy, we are fine, take a break, relax. Yet I keep reading about "acceptance" of the symptoms. Can you expain that a bit more: acceptance vs telling the brain no we are not doing this today? Thanks
@thepainpt
@thepainpt 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it’s a good question I get all the time. you want to be trying to influence the limbic brain to convince it you’re fine and for it to stop what it’s doing. stay in your prefrontal cortex to do that. This is the self talk messaging. Then you face and accept what’s there after your messaging. You’re accepting it at that point because you want to show the brain that you’re fine and that what it’s giving you is not dangerous. Acceptance from a place of strength I’ve talked about this on another video. Its definitely is something I can review many people seem to be confused by the two approaches
@krobin7h
@krobin7h 2 жыл бұрын
@@thepainpt Thanks, yes it might be worth a separate video. So seems it's more like a two-step process: 1) First, tell the brain you are in control, that everything is ok, that there is no reason for the pain, etc then 2) Accept what sensations there are, and try to just fully live and not fear it or focus on it. Thank you so much
@jossjekraayvanger7131
@jossjekraayvanger7131 2 жыл бұрын
I do it exactly the other way around: Step 1: Let it be, don't react. Step 2: (when it comes down a little): address the brain that it should back off I agree that it's confusing, but I can only talk strongly to my brain when the pain has first been felt.

Thanks for the helpful information in your videos! I have a question. How do you handle the Sarno approach when you have a combination of TMS symptoms (some related to knees but other areas as well) plus real structural issues? I had a knee replacement last year and now one leg is slightly longer than the other and my body is trying to manage as I walk. The slight misalignment causes real physical stress (and discomfort) in my hips? I appreciate any insights you can give.
@thepainpt
@thepainpt 2 жыл бұрын
Yes maybe get a heel lift or something like that to equalize that should really help. Also if the leg length difference isn’t that severe than the body usually can adapt to it in time most people don’t have exactly the same leg length and have no problems

Yes that means you’re doing a good job part of the healing journey involves this resistance. Where your limbic brain is going to fight back in a sense because that’s the pattern that’s in there you need to keep going until you break that down. This is when you need to double down on the techniques.

All this anthropomorphising -- "no, my dear Mr. Pain, I am not going to be triggered by your silly antics" etc. -- gets you nowhere in the face of a nasty flare-up, especially at the end of the day. You are simply at its mercy. The limbic system is by its very nature 'unconscious'; you can't shut it down by asking it to. The best you can do to send it a message is by BEHAVING in a manner that suggests you are unconcerned, unperturbed and indifferent. And that's easier said than done when the pain is going through the roof. Don't for a moment buy into this psychobabble BS.
What's your patterns?
