For everyone wondering yes, I do agree that Amber should have gone to check on whiskey so she definitely, is held somewhat responsible for whiskey’s death. But the main person responsible for whiskey’s death definitely falls onto Katie after all she was getting paid 1,000$ a month to train and take care of whiskey.

To be completly fair some of these trainers or places you have your horses sent don't allow you to visit, I had a horse sold illegally right under my nose and only found out because I called one of the hands there because they would not let me check on my horse. I was boarding my horse with a family member who owned a boarding stable near me for a few months while I fixed my trailer, I was sent plenty of photos etc but then one day I asked for photos and the person sent old ones they had already sent, I asked if I could visit and was shut down several times and even threatened with police beign called if i were to try, this was in no way the owners fault it was just a sad circumstance, and saying it's the owners fault detracts from the disgusting things the women who was caring for whisky did

@@xxhoneystarzxx4950Bro you should have just gone there without their permission, I don't think that blaming you or that girl at the moment is a great thing to do because everyone makes mistakes, but if you can't even admit to your mistake and you're saying that this was just a sad circumstance and shame on the woman- well it was not, I can't imagine being so ignorant that you couldn't even go and see your horse when you know that something is off, apart from that, if you have a horse then it's obvious that you should visit the horse once in a while even just to spend some time or play with it, if you don't do that- what is the reason of you beeing an owner of a horse which you don't even care about?

Personally, I don’t believe that ANY reputable establishment would ever find reason to refrain or prohibit an owner, a visit to a horse boarded under their care (as honeystar states)and and it should be tremendous ‘red neon flashing lights’, should you run across one. If your gut feeling or instinct tells you that something might be amiss, take heed and make the time to check it out - the proper care of your horse is ultimately YOUR responsibility and this young woman indeed had those gut feelings concerning Whisky -> when he was pictured always wearing his blanket made her question enough to ask the facility to provide a photo of Whiskey without his blanket, only to be met with this boarding facility's owner showing a hesitancy to provide that request and in fact, this young woman never received that photo, but still ignored the inner nagging feeling that something that something just wasn’t quite right. Unfortunately, I believe it lies in the hands of this young woman, Whiskey’s owner, (and all animal owners)and being Whiskey’s owner, it is she who holds the ultimate responsibility to make the effort to check in on Whiskey and see how Whiskey was fairing. That is the only way one can be certain. I am sure this young woman will never make this mistake again or dismiss a hunch, disregarded a flag or naively place her loved animal in the hands of another and just ‘hope’ all is going well - The complete responsibility, being the owner of Whiskey and being the payer of his upkeep and well-being, included not over looking or dismissing those ‘gut feelings’ she had experienced - and you should always, always make the time to visit. This in no way negates the inexcusable mistreatment that the facility owner inflicted on Whiskey. Her facility and she definitely need to be accessed and charged with animal abuse, if it is proven Whiskey death was caused by a forced starvation. What an absolutely horrible and excruciating painful death that poor horse was made to endure. I do agree that in all likelihood, this woman’s facility should be shut down and her horses taken - unfortunately, I’m not confident that will ever happen. Although I may not sound like it, I do honestly feel for Whiskey’s owner, who I know her heart has been shattered into a million pieces and I believe she is probably saying worse things to herself, for allowing this to happen, than anything I could ever say to or about her. Honestly though, my heart breaks even more for Whiskey and the terrible fate that he had absolutely no escape from, other than his eventual death. It seems he was completely abandoned, albeit a few over-the-phone inquiries, and otherwise left at the mercy of this facility’s owner, just should have never happened. I hope Whiskey is now healthy once again, running free in open beautiful pastures of green, where he can eat as many apples and carrots or all the treats he desires, because where he is, they are good for him and the more the better. May the only hands Whiskey forever feels, be filled with the tenderness, the protection, the care and the love he should have received in his last four months on earth. This is my hope and it’s what I choose to believe. Whiskey is the truest loss in this sad story....

I pull up and no one was around.. want into the barn and it had been cleaned out! Everything had been taken.. No tack, no grain, no hay, no halters, no lead ropes, no feed buckets everything was gone!! The barn was empty! I found My horse and a hand full of others out in a pasture. I tried to contact the trainer no response. I rushed home to get my trailer drove back loaded her up and got her the heck out of there! Called the police so they were there when I loaded her up to take her home. Found out through the grapevine the trainer was in the middle of a bad divorce. YES! I had an absolute shock when l collected my 2 little dogs one day early from a supposedly in-house, in the home, boarding facility. It had been recommended to me by an acquaintance as being a reputable breeder of West Highland White dogs. This was in winter here in Australia. I was flying out to attend my mother’s funeral & memorial service in another country & was going to be away for 11 days so my dogs needed a safe place to stay. I personally visited a number of boarding kennels & was appalled at the outdoor concrete floor& very cold fenced kennels with wire fencing. No way l was going to leave my dogs there, especially in winter😮 Hence a visit to the ‘recommended breeder’ where the dogs were all enjoying their own lounge room, heated warmth going, blankets on chairs & sofas. Looked wonderful. Assured my dogs would enjoy this comfort & sleep indoors, have outside play. I should have asked to see the outdoor ‘play’ area…if there even was one! She asked me to bring my dogs blankets when l dropped them off & l did so. I returned on evening of day 10 & asked to collect my dogs. She was clearly startled & asked me to wait inside & my dogs were not in her home. She went OUTSIDE the back & when she brought my dogs in with their previously clean blankets THEY ABSOLUTELY STANK & were filthy! That EVIL woman had left my dogs outside in winter and they were not boarded inside, in comfort, like the well behaved, beautiful pets that they are! Evil, evil, EVIL! That horse murdering woman SHOULD GO TO JAIL. Her face & despicable actions should plastered all over the horse world & media for ALL to see. Poor, poor Whiskey…& his owner. How she will ever get over this, l do not know

I had a "trainer" starve my horse and he had a big raw spot on him from a filthy stiff saddle pad. I brought him home as soon as i saw that. Another time I checked on my other horse and he had strangles and was underweight. I beought him home. I had to isolate him for 6 weeks till he was well. The last 2 I'd taken to a trainer had been bullied off their feed and lived in the oak thicket and were full of deer ticks all over their bodies. There are a lot of good riders who dont have a clue of stable management and husbandry practices. They have never started at the bottom with good horsemen and learned all the aspects of good horsemanship. Its all not about riding! So sorry for her loss. The last horseman who worked with my horses was good in all aspects and i was so pleased with his work. My horses were educated, not scared, and healthy. The other one lost 150lbs in 10 days. He just didn’t do well in turnout. The place does daily check on all horses. Even though they noticed his weight loss they never said a word. Had I not been doing regular checks I’m not sure I’d have had a horse. My horses were back with me in 10 days. I feel for this owner but she was within driving distance. The agreement was she would pick me up at the nearest bus stop when I was to visit. But she always said she couldn't and about a couple of months later, I get really suspicious, called her and said I really needed to see him, that 2 months had passed and I didn't accept excuses. So she ended up agreeing. The next afternoon, when I saw him, he was so thin I hold back tears. There was no pasture and he just looked at the floor without moving, dead inside. When he saw me, he made an effort to come to me. My heart was broke. He had untreated cuts too. The horses of the owner were in pristine condition. I was a teenager then. It was late afternoon, so I returned next early morning with a truck to get him. I am absolutely sure he would be dead if I waited a few weeks more. And they overworked her, and never trimmed her hooves! They were leasing her for about five months, and when we got her back she was skin and bones, over grown hooves, a mangy coat, and had a permanent limp. She’s SOOO much better now, but they didn’t pay the fee they were supposed to. Later in the year they got caught guilty after starving a horse to death, and payed 200,000 dollars for both of the horses(mine and another I didn’t know) Ruby is a lot better, she’s not skinny, she’s a lesson pony, and she’s well fed and well kept(I make sure, and see her every Saturday!) I would approach law enforcement, I know it's not always ideal. Since animals are, sadly, considered property your horse would be counted as stolen and anyone who currently holds him as holding stolen goods. Tell your 'friend' you'll be involving law enforcement and pressing charges if she doesn't come clean about where he is and return him. And/or that you will be contacting every vet, riding school and stable along with plastering this info all over social media and contacting her family (please don't harass the family tho they likely don't know) and will be making sure she can't even be part of the equestrian scene ever again and/or will have to face the fact if everyone she's ever met will know she's a thief not to be trusted or associated with and nuke(you don't have to actually do it, threatening should be enough) her social circle and family opinion of her. If you do contact local stables etc I'd suggest asking if you could put up flyers of your horse too. I pray you get your four legged friend back😢 if you do I'd love to know many hopes to you

Police report, send full photo and description to all livestock auction facilities and veterinaries- if they passed through there you'd find it, put lost horse missing- reward for information in feed stores and the local shelter, stores who let you, laundry mat. If they have an ID chip include this.

My new horse frankie had a similar experience. Bought him from my hay lady, beautiful well maintained and good mannered, she sent him in to Alberta for a touch up 1200$ a month there for 5 months, I paid the trainer 1350$ to get him to my house, he was NOT THE SAME. Depressed, Moldy hay, constant coughing, whipped marks. All alone, I've had him for 3 months now and he is finally purking back up, the trainer can't be found to press charges of neglect, didn't do anything for him. But cost a 70yr old money and abused a horse because he could.

I agree she definitely should have gone to see whiskey at least once a week or two. Could have possibly prevented this. But we don't know the whole story. The vet should also be held accountable for not reporting what she saw and lying to Amber about his condition on the phone. Nobody deserves to go through something like this and have no justice.

So sad! 😢 My parents sent their young gelding away for training and he came back looking extremely lean. Obviously the money she was being paid was not going towards the horse’s upkeep. It definitely impacted him and he’s since been terrified of leaving the farm … and will no doubt have to be tranquilized when the time comes for him to be rehomed. Important to always go and visit your horse on a regular basis! And if the person taking care of your horse has a problem with that, then I’d be very wary … find another means if you care anything for your horse.

This is heartbreaking for the horse that suffered and a hard lesson learned for its owner. I don’t own any horses myself, but my 35 year old daughter owns 7. She lives and runs a horse barn and the surrounding pastures that has the capacity to hold 150 horses. She has people employed and some younger kids, part board, which is working to help pay their horses board or help in lesson payments. At the facility my daughter runs, when a client boards their horse/horses at her facility and cannot for some reason stop in to spend personal or lessened time with their horse - which is the norm 99% of the time, but if they miss so much as one week, my daughter takes date stamped video of the particular horse and sends it via her phone to the clients phone. She also told me, there would be no way that she would ever put one of her horses in someone else’s care, that she couldn’t visit at will. She said to me, she loves her horses as they were her children ( she never had children of her own) and just as I wouldn’t have sent her off for 4 months with no contact, she would never allow to place one of her horses in a situation, that could ever result in the excruciating, painful and slow death this poor horse had to endure....I am in Canada, but surely there are laws against cruelty to animals there in the states too and this woman needs to be punished. So very sorry your sister’s heart had to feel this deep pain.

If there was a vet that euthanized Whiskey, then that vet would have called authorities upon seeing the condition of the horse. Then criminal charges would have been brought against the trainer. If Whiskey's owner paid for necropsy, then did she call authorities upon receiving the news of starvation and horrible body condition? This story has a lot of holes that don't make any sense.

Not necessarily. Every vet out there isn't as ethical as they should be. That woman probably pays out lots of $$ to the vet. That shouldn't matter, but too many times it does. Lesson here is always go at minimum every few weeks and check on your horse no matter how much you trust the person if for nothing else to see their progress.

Poor Amber but why did she never physically go check out this trainer? I worked for a western pleasure trainer, who did a good job taking care of the horses that he was in charge of but I always wondered why their owners would ever entrust anyone with their horse and never check on them. My husband trained Paso's for a while and the worst owners never came to see their horses. Someone who just dumps their horse off really could care less about what is going on and, invariably, they always thought that they would be able to ride this trained horse without spending any time with their horse. Sorry Amber this tragedy is on you.

though I believe that the horse in question did indeed starve. It would take much longer then 4 months for the horse to starve to death on its own. More then likely she was riding and exercising the horse thru that time period, excessively to speed this process along. This would be my worst nightmare come true, sending my horse off, spending big bucks to train them away from my eyes, hoping they are not being abused and/or starved thru the process. Im a firm believer if the horse is going off to training, make unexpected visits, and never send them to far away to make unexpected visits. So a more local trainer, and make surprise visits. This is just horrible what happened to that poor beautiful boy... people suck...

The only people I completely 100% trust trust with my horse is my (close) family. I still live at home and I'm so glad that my parents have horses themselves and that we can keep them private on our property. *Story:* My horse was homebred and when he got older we had to relocate him because we couldn't keep a stallion seperate from our small herd. It was only until he would be old enough to be gelded. We brought him to the person that owned the stallion that we bred my mom's horse to, my horse's father. My horse was under a year old, a bit feisty at times but otherwise really sweet. He wasn't afraid of anything as we already did a lot of desenstizing with him. We got there and he was brought into a stall that didn't have any shavings (first red flag) and we were told he would only be in the stall for maybe 2 hours to calm down after the trip as it had also been his first time traveling in a trailer. Afterwards he would be able to run in a big pasture along with other colts. My horse had been there for a few days when the owner of the facility called. She said my horse was aggressive, had tried to bite several times and ''should be tought manners''. We got the trailer ready and immediately picked him up. Turns out he had been in the stall for much longer than a few hours and then they put him onto a small paddock with bigger horses where he apparently slipped and fell because when we got him back he was lame. We brought him to a different facility further away and it was more expensive but 100% worth it. My horse was immediately integrated into the small herd of colts there and the owner of that facility said that they didn't have any problems with my horse. However they noticed that he was afraid of men... We (my mom and I) went to visit my horse every weekend for as long as he was there. We still have contact with these people and they take great care of the horses! My horse was afraid of a lot of things as we noticed when he was back at our place. Pitchforks, shovels, wheelbarrows,... the list goes on. He knew all these things but everything just scared him. It took a long time for him to get comfortable with these things again as well as with men. I don't know what he went through at that one facility and I'm not sure I even want to know. He's doing great now, turns 5 next month and we slowly started him under saddle last year. We take our time and take things very slow :) He's going to be my future trail horse. My heart goes out for Amber and poor Whiskey :(
