I remember my father used to tell me I'm your best friend you can talk to me about everything and don't hide anything. Now I'm a teenager and I don't hide anything from my parents, they don't even bother to question my activities because they have so much trust in me, which I will not break. I'm so lucky to have the best parents in the world

As a teenage-ish daughter myself I can say that this is very true. I have a very strained relationship with my father. I know he loves me and I myself wish that we were closer. But I didn't receive that much attention from him when I was little and when I grew up I felt like he was a stranger that was my father by name. It's kind of sad.

Agree 100%. No idea why so many parents are more preoccupied with being strict disciplinarians on their children. Why would you want to strain your relationship with your kids? I talk from experience as someone who is close to her mother but a stranger to her father even though he lives in the same house as us. He was too busy being angry and volatile to care about bonding with his children, thats why all his kids are strangers to him now. Sad, why do so many men want this life? Do you not want your children to pray for you when you die??

From a young age I learned that nobody cared about what I had to say. I was never included in family discussions and my family would talk about me in the same room to other people as if I didn't exist. Now I'm 17 and plan on moving out as soon as I save up enough money from my job because my mom acts as if I'm a burden to her. This hurts a lot from the child's point of view to feel unseen, unheard, and as if anything you say will be disregarded. When your child doesn't speak to you it is because they've learned you don't care. Being a friend doesn't mean you don't set boundaries, quite the opposite. In healthy relationships people do just that, the difference for when you have a relationship with your child is that they reciprocate, like they should. If you don't show interest in them they see that as a normal boundary of your relationship, they will then mirror it and you won't be as close. As a general rule, if you see an unpleasant behaviour in your child or teen, it is a reflection of your parenting and how you act towards them.

Yeah... I understand the part where I still feel not included, and so much pressure... But at the same time, i's already over (past) so think abt your future and theirs.. Please don't forget them and try your best to forgive them cuz u know right your mom could have died while giving birth, they went through so much pain.. Forgive and Allah will forgive you as well, that's what the Ummah needs... Love not Revenge

It's rude and unappreciative, but my parents talked for me in front of their friends/grown ups. I never had to answer anyone. Just my name and then they'll take care of the rest, exaggerating my achievements and looking deep to make me look good. That's poison to self esteem. They always meant well, but it just never went well.

I know how it's feels.... Remember this will teach us not to be like them... From our experience ....we become more understandable and generous...... I had terrible childhood...... Parents were the scariest part of my life.... Their abuse was scary..... They use to starve us for weeks and use to hit us.... And use to electricity to tourcher us..... And use to give us chilli smoke.... Coz.... They don't want to take responsibility.... This is saddening.... The people who should be protecting us from everything.... But they are most dangerous then everything..... They raised me like burden.... Even though I worked harder to complete chores.... Now they ask me why I hate marriage.... Coz of them... My brain and thought change about marriage...i see marriage as abuse..😓😓 I always wanted to have good parents.... But now I'm more scared of people... Living alone is better then living with fake people....

All the children want to be friend with their parents, but I guess the parents don't have time for that, they have appointments, meetings, important phone calls... until it's too late. This speech open my eyes, and I hope I can implement his words when I'll be a parent inshaAllah.

May Allah bless the brother who spoke in this video. Finally a speech which teenagers can relate to instead of the typical 'respect your parents' lecture. Yes you should respect your parents but it's important that the needs of youths are respected too and that parents should also see things from our perspective instead of getting too caught up in their own bubble or their typical 'ideal child' view

Alhamdulilah my mom is my best friend. We do alot of stuff together and I like to hang out with her and I come to her for advice. But my dad is a different story. He never learned how to properly take care of us and would drop us off at extended family. He did things that tainted my view of him. So he became the cash register you talked about. It's sad really, I wish he was different.

I’m literally crying like I haven’t cried before at the second he said “they just want to make you proud, they just want your approval”...oh lord I cant stop crying, I’m an 13 year old and I had a childhood/school year without my mother, I haven’t seen her for 7 years except for summer vacation, I blamed them before at how they didn’t respond at all when I was small and now I’m older and you want me to do something? Where were you when I need you guys the most. I know I shouldn’t blame them but I just feel so lonely, it feels like years since I have seen my dad and mom together at once....it’s just so sad that when I was grade 1 (elementary school) my classmates could have food made by their mother and all I have is food prepared by my nanny (and I a was very close with her) and of course I thank Allah for giving me food but it’s just so bitter....and now it feels quite strange around my mother and just.....I miss her so much to be honest...

Ruxuan Ma Assalam o Alaikum! I am really sorry for your situation, and I understand what you are going through. I think that it is very neglectful and sad that your parents did not listen to you when you were younger... and that is what has broken your relationship with your parents apart. Firstly, please do not feel lonely. I am here, and so are lots of other people! You can talk to me if u want, and I can tell u my social media if u want to contact me. It’s good that you are close with your nanny, and I think maybe you should try talking to her about your parents? I think trying to talk to your parents is a good first step. Of course, that is easy for me to say and it will be much more difficult for you in that situation, but I honestly think that talking to them and telling them about how you feel will help. I know that u feel bad about blaming them and shouting at them but I completely understand why u would do that and it is not ur fault. May Allah help you and give you a loving and kind relationship with your parents. Remember, I am here for u if u need help and do not give up hope!

Lonely Potato yea i will not give up hope, I am in a quite good condition with my father in fact, but...everything to be honest just feels kind of strange and weird, but I’ve gotten used to it, and I’m trying to rebuild the relationship with my parent better. And the thing too is that I have never told these things to them, nor have I shouted at them, I would never be able to do that. But I think that’s the main reason why I always hid the emotion without them knowing. And thank you very much! I am very happy and glad that there is so many good people on this platform

I almost cried. My dad extremely rare talked to me since i was a kid. The only thing he ever talked to me eas if he just asked abt something, just a lame chit-chat. I barely remembered a wonderful moment with my dad, though he isn't a bad guy, he's just a workaholic and a silent type person. I'm 28 now and the one thing i swear on myself is if i had a kid, aamin , i want to be their best friend, their mentor, their playmate. I don't want to create another cold hearted family, the cycle should end in me, insya Allah.

I have a powerful urge to send this to my mother 😭 she's the only one who raised me and we don't have a good relationship at all she didn't care about any achievements growing up or no compliments she'd only be there to tell u when u failed or insult u 💀it's painful😭

It is an excellent video but I object the word friend. I understand that a lots of parent use this word but I fail to understand why friend is a more powerful word than a parent. Why messing up the identity of relationships? Why can't you be an understanding, supportive, loving parent? If you have these qualities why you need to be called a friend?

Being a teenager , I can relate this . I would often seek attention from my father . But he would ignore me . As a result , I lost my attachment to him , and don't love him anymore .
