Volunteering is in a decade long decline. The world is moving so fast and people tend to be in a rush and thus have less time for things like volunteering. But what if volunteering was as important to someone as a college class, or their career, or finding their purpose in this world? What if we flipped the script on how we have volunteered in the past and...Be Selfish and Volunteer!
“Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime” is the mantra of Kevin J White a social entrepreneur with over 25-years experience working in the nonprofit sector. Starting out as a counselor of at-risk children and moving through the sector in various positions, Kevin eventually co-founded a 501(c)(3) public charity in 2008. Denver Gives’ mission is to provide low to no-cost capacity building resources to help small and local nonprofits meet more community needs!
As he progressed through the nonprofit sector he began to see opportunities which would lead him on the journey to social entrepreneur. Two projects currently under development are MADvolunteer.com and the DoingGood.ROCKS platform. Both are designed to connect small nonprofit organizations to volunteers, donors, companies and other resources in their communities. Kevin’s vision is that the ripple effects of connecting local resources to assist in solving world problems.

Kevin, thanks for the great Tedx Talk! As you know I volunteered as a way to transition into a new phase of my life, apply what I already knew about marketing and learn new skills to help small nonprofits. I also met so many great people I never would have met otherwise. Thanks!

The amount of volunteer opportunities are endless. He is right that it can be selfish and that's OK. For me, volunteering is about contributing to my local community. I want to take part in making my town a better place to live. I get a lot of enjoyment out of knowing I may have changed/bettered the lives of others. So it is selfish. If I stopped volunteering today, I would feel less fulfilled. As frustrating as volunteer work (especially at an administrative level) can be, if I stopped today I would miss it.

Volunteer work suppose to be a passionate job, filling the inner joy and happiness whenever you are in the Volunteered field. Using your knowledge and talent to create joy in the midst of people or in the life of someone. It has been me long term dream I don't know how and where to start. Really thank God for the great opportunity to give out what He deposited in our lives.

I am 61,volunteer at different prisons as part of team facilitating Restorative Justice process with inmates for past 13 years. I've also just graduated as a trained doula and the moment give of my time to 2 maternity hospitals. I will be so bored if I did not volunteer. Still no stipend, no money years later still happy to see people's lives being restored and babies being born into this world.

We're losing volunteers because people are underpaid- and they can't afford to spend all that time doing something for free. If wages were fair and in line with cost of living, those people would be able to afford to volunteer instead of working second and third jobs.

Well, this talk sounded like a motivational recruiting advertising: I own a non-profit organization, come work for me (for free)
