I think you are being extra critical. You cannot buy a fifteen year old car and complain it doesn’t have features which were not even in existence then. The 987 is so much value for the money these days - I have had mine seven years and love it.

I think you are bang on with most of those. Another thing that winds me up is how big the doors are and trying to clamber out in tight car parks. And it annoyed me that there was no LSD so I had one fitted for a bit more “drama”

When i drove my friends 987.1 s it didnt feels as fast as my 3.0i z4 which suprised me to be honest having an extra 45 to 50 bhp over the z4.Even so,I still love the boxster, although the ims issue scares the pooh out of me.
@gjonno
@gjonno 3 жыл бұрын
Don’t worry about it. The IMS issue is greatly exaggerated and it’s unlikely to happen after all these years anyway. I’ve had 2 987 Boxsters and covered 150k miles in them. No major issues and great cars.

I recently got one of these (well, the 2.7) and solved the audio in issue with a Mr 12Volt bluetooth adapter velcroed to the side of the cd changer in the frunk. Swap the fibre optical cable from changer to adapter, run a fused power supply to the battery and it fired straight up. The track select knob on the CDR24 even works. Biggest PITA I've found so far is the daft protruding buttons on the key remote which keep opening the boot lids when it's in my pocket. Other than that, love it!

Not sure if it's the same on Boxsters, but for my 987 Cayman the hazard lights blink twice when the car locks and once when it unlocks, so I haven't had any issues being able to tell if it's locked or not that way.

Hi Ben, I know exactly what you mean about the key I have that thought myself, oh and if you want rear wheel drama get yourself a 930 911 turbo 😁 I used to have an old 911 that was rear end bad, in comparison I much prefer the Boxster far superior to drive.

i think maybe you like the car too much to share its true weaknesses..You didnt even mention: the IMS, the pilling-off sticky paint of the interior, the super expensive window/roof rubber seals, the foggy headlights, the wear on the rear sides of the soft-top, the bushes which need replacement in all these cars, the issues of these engines and many more things. I love the car btw :P
@eddherring4972
@eddherring4972 4 жыл бұрын
IMS non issue you mean? Facts are: 1) Original issue affected around 10% of all cars 911 and Boxster/Cayman with the majority being the single row 996 & 986. 2) Of that 10% around 8% were fixed by recall leaving 0.002 outstanding. Of which some will have had the bearing replaced by later owners, of course some vehicles will have had their IMS replaced several times as vehicles change hands over their lifetime. So you could probably make that figure 0.001 remaining 3) The majority of vehicles which are stored for very long periods and have ultra low mileage are most likely to fail because the parts on them are around 20 years old, way past their expected shelf life. This leaves the bearing more likely to fail a brief explanation is below: When stationary the IMS bearing which is sealed for life and contains its own grease for lubrication sits semi submerged in engine oil. The oil very slowly dissolves the seals of the ball bearing races in the IMS bearing as neither the oil or the bearing is moving just sitting for months on end. The worn seals allow the oil to penetrate the seal and when the vehicle is eventually driven the grease is slowly washed away until you have a bearing which appears sealed but actually contains a little oil and no grease. The grease packs out the spaces between the bearings and the spaces between the bearings and the races. With it gone the bearings don’t receive enough lubrication from the oil and they start to rub, getting pitted and eventually flakes start to come off. Eventually the bearings are so worn that they are no longer spherical and the wear rate increases until eventually the rough ball bearings push the bearing seal on the IMS bearing and the bearing fails. This causes the ball bearings to scatter into the engine and the timing chains to slacken off. Result is catastrophic engine failure. This is why you should check the oil filter for metal fragments at each oil change and service the oil and filter approximately every 5 to 8 thousand miles. 4) The original double row bearings were changed to single row because A) the double row was noisy B) because they suffered from snapped timing chains. 5) When the IMS bearing issue was found, point 4B was the reason they didn’t just go back to the noisier double row bearings but re-engineered the single row bearing into a sturdier component. So if you don’t want the thrill of a 170mph mid engined sports car for £5000 because there is the tiniest chance of your engine failing then walk away. Or be sensible and check the receipts, go for higher mileage, check for recent servicing not likely from Porsche but from a Porsche specialist. It wouldn’t be unreasonable for an owner to change their own oil and filter though. Do your checks and if in doubt walk away, go to the next one. Finally, most people are scared stiff that their engine will suffer IMS bearing failure so they have had them changed. Imagine typing illness symptoms into Google and you understand they hype that after market sellers are putting out about IMS bearings. You’re so unlikely to have it happen because previous owners have taken care of it.

@@eddherring4972 where did you get this 8% fix rate?? Also 10% minus 8% (highly doubtful) still leaves a minimum of 2% failure rate.

I have a 2005 too, and generally I love it, I don't know if I could come up with 5. But I agree, I hate the key because it's SO DAMN BIG. I know that's kind of a modern car thing (I'm coming from a 944 so the Boxster feels very "new" to me). And another "modern" car gripe is that it beeps and dings WAAAAAYYYY too much. Yes, I know my seatbelt isn't fastened, now shut up. 😁

Sop whining! You're lucky to have a Boxter. If it were a zed4 the rooflock, which is hydraulic, would be leaking oil all over you. It looks good in black. Oh ya, if your radio has a tape player, you can get a tape cartridge with a wire that will plug into your phone. I used one on my 98 Volvo and it worked well. I plugged the power cord into a cigarette lighter adaptor.

The roof button is good if you have children. They will press the button when you're not looking and try to bring the roof down when you're doing 30+. To be honest, just change up at 5000RPM once the engine is warm. It's a sports car rev it man. As for the radio the Gen 2 came with a phone conn for my iPhone but I'm sure you could go after-market with head-unit, amp and speakers. Check out Focal.

Everyone praises these cup holders, and I mean they look cool but I just feel they’re needlessly complicated? it can be like five steps to get them out. You press on the centre, the whole thing goes down, you press on the left cup holder, it comes out, then the right one, it comes out, and then you close the centre. Idk, I find it really annoying but it’s probs just me lol

WOW, you have one hell of a sweet looking Boxster S. I'm about to pull the trigger (I'm in America) on a 2007 Boxster S (Manual Transmission) with 22k in miles for around 27k. Thoughts?? By the by..You and Joel create some very good content on your videos that we all can learn from. Also, why did BMW and the Porsche place their cup holders so damn high in both cars? Your asking for a disaster because the content of your drink, (Coffee) WILL spill all over your interior. We're talking about a Greman made cars and the engineers thought that would be a perfect place? Wrong. You need to get a third party cup holder that you can place at the center gravity of the car. Foolishness!!!
