One of the most sublimely beautiful songs ever recorded. The harmonies in this one are gorgeous, especially at the end. I am incapable of ever getting tired of this song.

I heard millions of songs, I am a music lover, and this song is one (probably top 5 of all time) of the greatest song ever. Good job Kirti and Savio!🤙

My favorite song by the Beach Boys, and one of he best songs I've ever heard. It has a strong emotional appeal, and if you grew up in the 60's and 70's like I did, this song has a lot of strong memories attached to it...especially when it comes to falling in love.

The Beach Boys still sound great! First heard them at age 7 or so and they were heroic to me, eclipsing anything else heard in the early 60s.

Those clicks you hear was my friend Hal Blaine's idea to add to the record, they are two empty plastic orange juice bottle he had Jim Gordon tap on with drumsticks while Hal played the drum parts.

The Beach Boys started recording music in California in 1962, the same time the Beatles started recording their music in Liverpool. When the Beatles hit America in 1964, it signaled the started of the British Invasion and British bands especially The Beatles dominated the American Pop scene and pushed bands like The Beach Boys with their surfer music into the background to some extent. When Brian Wilson heard Rubber Soul upon it’s release in 1965, he realized that The Beatles had taken pop music to another level and he was inspired to elevate The Beach Boys music to match or surpass that. The result was the Album Pet Sounds and songs like God Only Knows which Paul McCartney has said is his favourite pop song of all time. His response to this song was Here, There and Everywhere on the Beatles next album Revolver so these two bands were inspiring each other to higher and higher heights in their song writing and musical composition. Too bad YT does not allow you to react to any Beatles songs as they are arguably the most innovative, talented songs writers and band of all time and if you want complex, interesting lyrics they are the band who are definitely beyond compare.

In spite of the repetitious lyrics; the harmony of the voices were great. The Beach Boys captured that California surfing sound which was their signature.

Repetitious yes, but several changes in a relatively short song keep the listener off-balance enough that it doesn't become tedious. Then of course is the really beautiful melody, and as you mentioned the great harmonies make it the classic it is. The "God only knows what I'd be without you" line may be the greatest hook of all time.

This is the Beach Boys song which most impressed Paul McCartney and the Beatles producer George Martin most , George Martin made a visit to Brian Wilson´s , the writer of the song, many years later to talk with Brian about how he composed .. They had fun working on the mix of this song in Brian's home studio, : The film is on Utube, "Brian Wilson George Martin" should get it ,

Even more emotionally touching, in my opinion, is this British Broadcasting Corporation production in which a wide variety of popular artists spanning five decades join together, accompanied by an orchestra, to perform God Only Knows. The guy at the piano is Brian Wilson, leader of the Beach Boys, who wrote the song, sang the lead vocal on the original, produced the phenomenal instrumental track, and wrote the harmonies for the rest of the band. God only know how you haven’t heard this before. Re: you comment on Beach Boys’ “lighter” songs: This song is from Pet Sounds, beach boys first “serious” album. Before that, their music was mostly simple pop about surfing, cars and girls. The “fun in the sun”-era. With Pet Sounds, and the album’s that followed, they ventured into more mature territories. This music was more sophisticated, but much less commercially successful. You also mentioned Kokomo - that is very much a call-back to the “fun in the sun”-era from later in their career.

this was less comercially succesful because Capitol Records, Beach Boys own records company, sabotaged in some way the 'Pet Sounds' album, they didn't marketed it as their previous albums, it's a shame because after all these years that album is considered by many the best rock/pop album ever recorded.

That’s partly it. I think much also had to do with the public not having the patience to listen to it. They wanted and expected fun fun fun in the sun.
